Upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop?

Capt Joe

Recommended Posts

OK... so I have a Samsung S5 running Android 4.4.4 and 5.0 Lollipop is available. Anybody with real world experience with the 5.0 and have any thoughts or comments on doing the upgrade?

What added benefits would I see with the upgrade?

Any problems in doing the upgrade?

If you had to do it again, would you?

Etc., etc?

Thanks,

Capt Joe

There are many problems with this upgrade. Take the time to do some searching for problems. I'm trying to find a way to return my Daughter's tablet back to the prior OS. I'm running across quite a few diverse fixes. It seems there is not just one that corrects the problems this update creates.

So far I have not found any problems with the upgrade. I upgraded my S5 2 days ago. All my previously installed apps still work. I actually like the screen colors better. Easier for me to see. No problems here.

The above quoted problems were with a Nexus phone, not an S5 the OP mentions.

My wife's Droid Turbo is still at 4.4.4 and does not yet have an upgrade offered.

I've been on it with my Note 3 without any issues at all. I happen to like the new user interface more than the old one.....

I also have it on my Nexus 7 2012. DO NOT upgrade that one. It works fine, but the processor on that device does not perform well with the upgrade. It is VERY slow. But works.

As I said above, try a little searching. It's not hard and there is enough info out there to make one give some thought to waiting for the next lollipop upgrade(looks like, maybe, this March) not only for the Nexus but the S5 also. This link gives "some" problems and "some" fixes for problems pertaining to the S5/Lollipop combo.

"We’ve also spoken to some Galaxy S5 owners who are running into Android 5.0 Lollipop problems after moving to Samsung’s latest update. We’ve pointed out a number of these Galaxy S5 Lollipop issues and the list continues to grow as more and more Galaxy S5 users receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. With plenty of updates to go, we expect the list to expand even further as the year goes on."

Quote from gottabemobile.com in a paragraph following another paragraph mentioning that some S5 folks "don't have a problem".

This link has some good info but is fairly long. There are many more sites listing problems/fixes with the "S5" as well as other brands.

I upgraded my Nexus7. Actually don't like the user interface at all. I much preferred the look and use of email etc on the previous setup

I am happy with Lollipop on my Nexus 10. I am looking forward to the update on my Note 3, which is not officially here from Verizon.

I finally got my hands on my daughter's Nexus 7. I followed some directions to install Lollipop 5.0.2(latest for that particular date). Following the dialogue boxes during the install, it pretty much deleted everything but the OS. Since it seemed ok(to me) when done, I restored pretty much everything from her last backup. It did seem to not restore the garbage and ended up looking pretty good to me. When I gave it back to her she thought it was as fast as original and she only lost some recordings that she can re-download if she wants to. We'll see how it goes for her as she uses it more.

Ron, on the 2013 Nexus 7 it may be as fast....they have far better processors. But my original 2012 N7 is pretty slow with it.....so for others....consider that as a factor.

I read that the other day while researching what problems she might be having. I don't remember "anyone" saying they got it working on the 2012, although someone certainly may have. It looks to me like they may have fixed some problems with the .1 and .2 updates. I talked to her today and she is still pretty thrilled . . . at least until next time she has to call Dad. lol

Yes, Jack,... s-l-o-w and hitchy-glitchy, too, on the older Nexus 7. It will work fine for awhile and then suddenly start acting like I have norton's or McAfee's on it and start stuttering, spitting and even page scrolls become erratic.

It is almost like something in the power management stuff starts getting in the way of getting anything done.

OK, My older Nexus 7 was making me a little nuts, mostly because since I got my Note 4, my DW has been using the N7 a lot more and she is less tolerant of these glitches and hangs. The Lollipop version is nice. Those that have problems with the interface can put on one of several launchers and make it what they like.

But, on the performance side, the problem is caused by an issue with the format of the Dalvic cache from the old system. Last night, I booted into recovery mode (gets a little tricky, though) and wiped the cache (NOT THE FACTORY RESET WIPE) and ever since it came back up it has been great. No bogs, no glitches, no hitches.

The trick is getting into recovery because once it has booted into the main boot console and you pick RECOVERY MODE, android just flips over on his back with a NO COMMAND error, then nada.

So, when it gets to this point, press and while holding the Power key, momentarily press the VOL+ button and it will switch into the Recovery console where you can toggle down to the WIPE CACHE choice and press the power button. WHen it finishes, just select REBOOT and you should be good to go.

I am back to being very happy with my N7.

Good luck, guys.
