Read up on Johnston Atoll and you will see that it was a nuclear test site and a chemical weapons storage site, with numerous leaks reported. I have no doubt the ants are crazy.

My husband was tagged for a year long remote (military) assignment to JA, back in 1999. We had 3 year old twins, a 1 year old, and had just the week before learned we were expecting #4. To say I went into a panic is an understatement. Thankfully, the #2 guy on the list took the assignment and hubby didn't have to go. Divine intervention, that was.

Edited to add: Yeah, it's pretty much a nuclear/chemical dump site.
