Fort Davis, Texas?

We are exploring possibilities of a volunteer position in this part of TX as we have not spent any time there. I an looking at Davis Mountains State Park and also at Ft. Davis National Historic Site. If anyone has volunteered at either or has knowledge of such experiences, any thoughts would be welcomed. Also suggestions of other possibilities in that area?

We have volunteered at the state park and will be back in April. June is the hottest month normally. The park elevation is about 5000' and tucked into a valley. Sites have cable TV at each site and WiFi (slow) is at HQ, the restrooms and Indian Lodge. Tara was the volunteer coordinator and is supper to work with. Cell phone service in the park is pretty much non-existent, but with a cell phone booster and a directional antenna, we could get a signal for calls and text..

Two of the host sites won't take over about a 35' long trailer or motorhome. They put us in a regular site and rent out the host site.

There is a grocery store in town ( a small local chain that is not too bad on price), a Family Dollar, nice old library with good WiFi.

We have friends that have volunteered at the Fort Davis Historical site and enjoyed the stay. You get to dress in period dress and have to learn a lot of the local history. The host sites there are out in the open, not far from the road.

The nearest WalMart is over an hour away in Ft, Stockton. There is a small hospital in Alpine, but major medical is 3 hours away in Midland/Odessa.

The area is high desert, cooler at night and beautiful in the spring.

We spent most of the summer about and hour and a half north of there and I can promise you it is extremely hot...dry heat, yes, but still very, very hot!!!! The temps look pretty nice right now and I bet, like Txiceman said, the Spring is a great time to be out there.

I'm guessing an hour and a half north of Ft. Davis is Pecos, or Midland/Odessa and they are about 10-15 degrees hotter than Ft Davis, also a lot lower elevation. Pecos & Midland/Odessa regularly go above a hundred in July & Aug. Much different than Ft. Davis. Here is a link to Weather Undergound's history calendar for Pecos. Compare that to the same history for Marfa, TX (the closest location at same elevation as Ft. Davis with weather history from Weather Underground).

That is not to say, Ft Davis won't be very, very warm in an RV in July and August. Especially if you are parked in the sun. In a house with good insulation the temps would not be uncomfortable.

I believe the volunteer RV parking at Ft. Davis National Historic site is at GPS: 30.600269 -103.886640 . Plug those coordinates into Google Earth or Google Maps for a satellite view of the area. Very sunny. A street level view is available from Google Earth.

We hosted at Pedernales Falls State Park 2 winters ago. It was between Austin and Fredricksburgs in the hill area. They have host and maintenance positions there. It was a great place and cooler in the summer, we were told for Texas anyway.
