Rappahannock River Valley NWR

Ron & I have been volunteering here for several months and it is actually our second time to stay with these fine folks.

Our Deputy Manager, Bill Crouch, has asked me to post the volunteer opportunity here.

The refuge is located on the "Northern Neck" of Virginia along the Rappahannock River. This area is a history lovers delight, home to the birthplace of George Washington and other founding fathers of our country. The river is one of the largest breeding habitats for bald eagles on the east coast. The area is semi rural with shopping for regular daily needs with in 15 minutes. Richmond & Fredericksburg, VA are only 1 hour away with D.C. 2.5 hrs away. With the proper Fishing License you can have a grand time on our ponds or on the river.

Only 24 hours per week/per person, including a single volunteer, is required for the their one and only full hook up site.

This fall opportunity is rather special. The volunteers need to arrive no later than 9/15 and be able to stay until 12/15. This volunteer will be managing the white tail deer hunt program which includes issuing hunting permits, monitoring the refuge hunt phone line, assisting with posting hunt signs on the various properties etc. This task requires someone who is very organized, can work independently and preferable already has been fully background checked ( has a certificate of investigation. This means that at some point you have filled out and submitted a 5+page application fort a background check very similar to what an employee would need). It can be a little hectic on certain days but it is fun.. If a couple is selected there are other opportunities available during that time period for light maintenance, some mowing etc.

The staff is very small (4 people) & friendly. The local Friends group are also very nice to work with.

The site: One gravel full hookup with a washer & dryer on site in another building. This site is currently not suitable for an RV over 40ft or so long. There is plenty of additional room for a tow vehicle/toad.

Our Verizon phones work great, our hot spot does require a small antenna for best service. We have no local TV reception, just our DirecTv. I believe a roof mounted sat will work fine.

Please contact Bill Crouch, Deputy Manager at : 804-333-1470 ext 115 or .William_Crouch@fws.gov

The opportunity is also listed on http://www.volunteer.gov

We will be happy to answer questions.
