Insurance Claims Questions

JPL

Recommended Posts

All Some know from a previous post that I had the 5er drop off the hard surface for just a few seconds while on a narrow 2 lane road. It really messed up the spring hangers and the springs on both sides. The 5er is currently sitting in a repair shop waiting on the running gear to arrive so that repairs can be completed. These repairs were quoted and the insurance company sent a check for the repairs. Once its back on good springs and doesn't have that 5" list I will be taking it to the dealer for the rest of the repair quote. The 5er is a 2015 43' Mesa Ridge by Open Range.

Questions:

Has anyone had problems making claims when the full extent of repair is unknown? Or when 2 or more repair shops may be involved. I know that I have structural problems within the walls because I see 2 cracks on the ext wall and a structural break inside because you can see where it punched through the interior wall. The kitchen floor seems really bouncy. I have talked to our dealer and he said it will probably have to go to the factory to be repaired. Should I take it to the factory or let the insurance people take it? I would want to take it if they were going to get right on it. I would stay depending on how long the repair. And I would like to see how it will be repaired.

I am really nervous about this because of what I can't see. I really put a strain on the 5er and the frame because it really scared my wife because she was behind me. She thought that the 5er was going to roll over but the Volvo just kept pulling it right back on the road. I tried to explain in my post: Overkill? Never.

I have called the insurance adjuster to try to set up a time we can get together so I can ask my many questions.

Has anyone got any lessons learned when dealing with a claim on their RV?

I just retire last Sept and we bought this unit to hit the road with. It wasn't intended to hit the road like I did!

Any comments, insight, thoughts or experiences will be appreciated. Pat

Given the damage, I'd be pushing to have the unit written off and replaced. The labour on the under carriage alone makes me raise an eyebrow at the unit build strength

I have been wrong before, I'll probably be wrong again.

Open Range uses 10" chassis steel. Very light weight also. They state no holes in beams since they use cables for slides. Don't need heavier steel. That works until something like this happens. I also agree this may be a total loss.

I hope that is the way it goes but until we can get a quote from the factory we won't know. Pictures have been sent to the factory so now we will wait for a Quote based on pictures. Hopefully the parts will be here fri and then it will go back onto 4 wheels. Our local dealer is waiting for me to bring it to them. Insurance wheels turn slow. As I know more I'll keep this post updated.

Glenn I haven't been able to see if there is actual frame issues. Hopefully when the under skirting comes down to allow access to weld on the new brackets to the frame I;ll be able to get a better idea about the frame. Until then I'm just waiting. W/O a 5er. Sad Face. Pat

We had a claim on our home that increased substatially as more damage was revealed. It was a fight to get it all covered. As things progressed we were able to get things mostly covered until the last repair. The insurance company delayed and wouldn't give us a commitment. Then we received a letter that our final project was denied. I hired an engineer and had a realtor write a letter documenting a loss in value. Then I sent this with a cover to the state insurance commision. Suddenly, the insurance company agreed to fix the problem. The insurance companies manager did write me a nasty letter afterwards saying I should have stayed in house but the repair ($48,000) was completed.

Randy R Thanks for that info. Your bad experience was the reason I posted. I hope it doesn't go that far but I'll keep the SIC in my back pocket. Thanks Again Pat

I agree. Push for a write off. Pretty much guarantee that even if fixed, it will be a never ending nightmare

As I stated the state insurance commision may be able to help but I think it is important to have documents and pictures to substantiate your position. In my case I was prepared to bring in attorneys but thankfully it wasn't needed. The insurance commision sent a cover letter to the insurance companies president and requested a response and I sent a copy of my letter to the insurance adjuster that denied our claim and our insurance agent. There was little delay as the claim was approved in days.

Hello folks,

Good info, everyone. Thanks for the OP for posting it and the others for responding.

This is specially useful for foreigners like us, that have never had any dealing with insurance in the US, so we know how to proceed if we ever need to.

Cheers,
