Grill Guard

We are planning to drive to Alaska next summer. I have a high degree of paranoia regarding moose. While living in Alaska many years ago I was traveling about 60 mph when two moose walked onto the highway right ahead. I went between them with little clearance on either side. My ex and I each leaned away from the moose next to our sides and we touched shoulders.

I know the trees are cut back from the highways in much of Alaska, but that's not the case on some of the Alaska highway. Thus, I'm going to install a grill guard. The guards range from shinny but light gauge metal to Australian roo bars. Most install on the existing bumper. The expensive ones replace the bumper.

My goal is to have enough protection to drive away after a collision with a moose. A moose will damage the grill, but the guards should protect the radiator.

Any suggestions?

You need a heavy bumper. Just think of the forces involved with hitting a 1000 lb animal doing 65mph.

In all the years of driving in AK I have glanced a moose one with my '03 Sierra. And my wife had a moose calf run into our VW Jetta while at a full stop. Damn things just do what they want.

Herd is good, Bandit Bar is local to us, and offers a video test. No matter which brand you go with, get the complete front end kit, or be ready to buy some aero fiberglass pieces. Lots of trucks up here run without any protection, with no ill effects. The wildlife mostly moves during dawn and dusk times, which in the North, is usually well outside normal RV travel hours.

I have been wrong before, I'll probably be wrong again.

Don't forget to check with Gregg. Some of his trucks come with moose bumpers and he may be willing to work out a trade for that nice shiny chrome one you have.

Happily I haven't been in a situation to test my "Ali Arc" I believe it will get the job when needed.

Nice pic. You truck looks "at home" in Larry's shop. I do like the moose guard.

Thanks Jack...that's what I'm afraid of, being "at home in Larry's shop". Need to make one more trip to the shop.

The Ali Arc has a removable pin with 2 screw-in eyelets on the front, easy to drop down and open the hood. Yes there is a lot of room to access the engine compartment when open.

My bumper has no eyelets, I opted for a slam latch for another 150.00.

Very easy to open after pulling the tow pin and then opening the pull latch.

Hope these pictures work.

So Roger, did you do the headlight mods? Your bumper looks great....
