Over Length

Recommended Posts

I went to the Richmond NASCAR race yesterday and saw a M/H with a trailer that looked a mile long. I started pacing it off. I got 80 Feet. Then the owner came by to get in the side door of the Big trailer. It looked like a variety of parts. I asked how long and he said 85'. So I asked him if he ever got stopped. He said Calif was tough but he got a ticket in Texas. He said that he had been towing there 5 years an not stopped but then he got a ticket there and it cost him $500. He said he figured he broke even. He now stops and gets a over length permit. Big5er did you get him? Does he have to post a banner or anything w/ the permit. I didn't ask if he was in anyway commercial. Keep an eye out for him cause he sounds like he follows the race season. I was sitting in turn 4 watching a great finish to that race! Pat

Pat,

Deb and I were there! We and friends have 5 lots together in Lot F. Makes enough room to circle the RVs and still have enough room for a big tent in the middle.

Looks like there may be a conflict with the ECR next year based on the proposed dates. :(

I don't think he qualifies for an over length permit. All states require the load to be broken down to its smallest parts in order to qualify for a permit. In this case they would simply require him to pull the trailer with a shorter tow vehicle, a regular sleeper tractor for instance instead of a 40' bus or motor home.

If he gets the permits, he would have to follow all of the requirements for whatever state he is in, he has to have a separate permit for each state. All would require signage, some would require yellow revolving lights(which require a separate permit to operate in GA and NV). Some would only let him operate daylight hours, some would prohibit weekend travel, and all kinds of arcane rules depending on the state.

Typical race type, skirting the non-commercial/commercial thing and making up the rules as he goes along. Just because he hasn't gotten busted doesn't mean he is legal.

LOL, there ain't no telling Pat, but anything is possible. I nail a lot of racers passing through here. Jeff is right about needing a shorter truck to avoid the permit, but the clerks at the DMV are like anyone else. Just tell em what you want and half of them will give it to ya. LOL

I usually work the eastern half of a county the size of Rhode Island Vern :) My work schedule is easier. I'm off on Sat/Sun/Mon. But the guy on the west side of the county likes to.write RV's tickets and he work Monday. Sat/Sun is your best bet hehe

I was watching for your HDT RV-hating buddy when we left Harris County a couple of years ago. Had I known that he didn't work on Sundays, I wouldn't have bothered being concerned. As it turned out we left on a Sunday, not to avoid him, but because I had to get through Houston to get home, and I definitely wanted to avoid weekday traffic.

Billr You get the race in Canada? Have you opened the CG yet? Hope you had a safe trip north. How did you like the finish?

NeverEasy We just went up on the spare of the moment. I was able to get a 4 ticket pkg from Papa Johns. We parked on the street that runs straight int the vendor trailers. We were able to get out easy. No traffic issues back to Chesapeake. We are going to be in Sand Bridge for a week at a rental house. Can we get together? 757 646 1686.

Big5er I always thought they had to have a banner saying O/S load or a chase car. Guess I was wrong. Oh well. 5er if we get thru Houston we'll meet up on a friendly meet! Have a great day an be safe. Pat

A permitted load for over weight or over dimensional will have many requirements depending on it's weight and dimensions, and depending on the state it is traveling through. And there is absolutely no uniformity to the regulations.

Example. Occasionally you will see escort cars parked on the entrance ramp at the first exit over the state line. It is a 12' wide load, state X requires escorts on front and back, state Y may not require escorts at all.

Permits these days are almost all generated by computer. A trucking company orders a permit thru a company that keeps track of the current DOT routing requirements for a given size load in a given state The permit agency figures the route and costs and orders the permit from the state, which usually issues it.

Back to the OP, if Mr. Nascar is staying in the same state, or for every state he travels through he can contact the permit agency and get the permit issued, the computer doesn't know the difference. But if a LEO stops him, the permit is not valid because of the reasons described, no signage, load could be broken into smaller pieces. If it were just a matter of getting a permit for a big load, trucking companies would routinely put an extra say 25,000 lbs in a trailer, pay the $53 fee and move 50% more freight at a considerable savings( driver, fuel equipment etc). But safety and the roads would sure take a beating.

This is the reason I avoid Houston. It is not a joke that the western side of Houston is hostile towards RVers. Even if you are not over-length you may be pulled over. So my take on it is it is best to avoid Houston altogether. The downside to this is I only get to see Phil "occasionally". :)

Pat, come on through and say "hi" if you ever get down this way. Mark and Dale Bruss tried to sneak through once and got caught. Mark thought it was strange when the cop walked up and asked Dale for a hug. :)
