What is your preference at Escapade?

The past two Escapades, Pam & I have hosted a social hour for members of the Escapee forums. In 2014 the gathering was pretty well attended, but in 2015 the Tucson Escapade had only two who stopped in and neither of them stayed for long. As a result, we are considering discontinuing the social but, at the request of the Escapade Director, I thought that I would ask to see how much interest there may be. If you plan to attend Escapade and would like to spend an hour or so meeting others who frequent the forums, please reply to let me know. It is also important to share that the scheduled social hours are all scheduled for 4:30 in the afternoon and there are always more than one scheduled for that same time period. It is when the different BOF socials take place as well as any special interest group so conflicts are unavoidable.

What is your pleasure? I would be happy to host a meet and greet at our RV site one evening, which I think might be a better approach than to schedule a room for it. Please don't hesitate to speak up if you plan to attend and have a better idea or any suggestions. It is nice to be able to put faces with those we get to know here, so we are open to suggestions.

We will not be attending Escapade this year as it is too far a distance for us. Last year at Tucson we initially planned to attend your social hour but unfortunately we had a conflicting event at the same time. I don't recall the schedule details but there were several socials at 4:30pm that we had an interest in attending. Too many socials, not enough to attend them all.

We would be interested right now but until we get the Escapade schedule can't really be firm about it. That is always part of the problem, you don't know what is going on until you get there. Maybe the Escapade Book should be posted online when it is finalized and sent to the printer. Then those of us who like to do planning as to what we are attending each day can do that, subject to what is posted on the bulletin board of course.

Jean and I will be there. We met you at the Goshen get together. Didn't go to Tucson. Nice to face-to-face again!

If this doesn't work, I'll send you a PM and we can arrange to meet at some point in the event. :)

That would be helpful to those attending, but setting that schedule is exactly what we are trying to do now so until we know who all want to plan a social hour, there is no way to print that schedule. Typically, there are 4 to 6 social gatherings at the same time each of the days that they are scheduled. At Tucson there were more than 900 RVs and since there is only time to hold them for a couple of hours on Tuesday & Wednesday it isn't possible to avoid any conflicts. It is very difficult to plan and put together a social hour if you have no idea how many to expect and very frustrating to get ready and have nobody come.

At this point I am thinking that it may work best to just try and gather under the awning at one of our RVs. We have found that some of our best Escapade experiences have taken place in the RV park with less planned gatherings.

I still would like to see the schedule posted for the sessions during the week so that I can do some pre-planning as to what I/we want t attend and see where we have free time for site-seeing. One less thing to do when we get to Escapade.

We won't be there this year, but I went to the 2014 Escapade in Goshen. There were 3 socials I really wanted to attend, including yours, all at the same time. I tried to do all 3 and it did not work well. It was uncomfortable for me, showing up late and/or leaving early. My perception was that many of the folks at each social most likely felt like I was disrespecting them. I meant no disrespect, but just wanted to actually meet all the folks I had interactions with but never met.

To the extent possible, given the many scheduled activities, it would be better not to do all the socials at the same time. Perhaps reserving tables at a few of the meals for certain groups, BoF's ect, would work better. If 20 percent of the groups reserved tables for each of 5 suppers, there should be few conflicts.

Building on the supper table thought... I doubt most people belong to two area chapters. If that is true and they all met on one night, there should be few conflicts. On the other hand, folks may have both a winter and a summer chapter they are active in, Perhaps have the northern chapters meet one night and southern chapters another night. This would leave the other nights less conflicted for the BoF's and other socials like the one Kirk hosts.

Hi there and thanks for all the great thoughts on Escapade happenings. Such a life we have, with so many choices for happy hour each day! :) It's a wonderful problem! :D

A few thoughts in answer to questions and suggestions:

  • The full seminar schedule is posted on the website once it has been finalized; this should take place in about 2 weeks or so. You can then view all the seminar times and locations. (Kirk may publish a link to it here on the Forum once it goes up.)
  • A social schedule will also be published so all can review it...just remember that many socials happen "spontaneously" ( or "organically" depending on your generation :) ) and don't get on the schedule until after folks arrive on site. Those are published in the Escapade Extras each day and also posted on the bulletin boards.
  • Of special interest to those of you who are "First Timers" at Escapade; Monday at 4:30 PM is the First Timers social and it's a great way to get to know all the other first timers. Normally, all the new "fulltimers" (those hitting the road this year or last--Graduating to Fulltime) are encouraged to gather at a couple of tables in one area to get to know each other.
  • There could also be a "SKP Forum" table at the First Timers social for those attending that want to get to know each at the social. Just another thought for you.

We hope this helps a little bit. There are also many tables in the hospitality area that could be designated as a morning (or other time) gathering area for Forum members. There are many ways to arrange a meet-up, so it's nice to see y'all thinking "out-of-the-box" in this regard.

Big hugs to all and we'll see you in Vermont very soon!

  • 2 weeks later...

Due to the low level of interest, we will not be holding the Forum Social Hour at the Essex Junction Escapade. Should anyone wish to, meet other members of the forum, drop me a PM and I'll be happy to arrange something for our small group at our RV or some other location.
