mikeeusa
Would like to get into Ham Radio and haven't the foggiest idea on where to start. Equipment first? Any license required? Etc., etc.. Just as an aside, when I singed into the forum I did a search for Ham Radio and got nothing. Then while scrolling through the topics section I saw Amateur Radio. Seems like the search engine needs a tuneup?
skp51443
The search engine here is pretty brain dead and there is no real hope it will get better. The good news is you can use Google with the "site" option to find stuff here quite effectively. These turn up 800 + hits: Copy/paste to search: site:rvnetwork.com ham radio Click to try: https://www.google.com/webhp?q=site%3Arvnetwork.com%20ham%20radio#safe=off&q=site:rvnetwork.com+ham+radio First rule of computer consulting: Sell a customer a Linux computer and you'll eat for a day. roberjw49
Go to www.arrl.org and find a testing location near you. There you will find someone near you to contact and help you prepare and successfully complete the required exam for your license. Then a whole nother world opens up for you - ham radio. TXiceman
The ARRL site can help you locate a radio club near you. Contact them and see if they have a study class and when exams are given. There are three license classes, Technician, General and Extra. ARRL sells study guides for the three classes. The Tech license will get you VHF/UHF, 6m and limited 10m use. The general class will open up the HF or high frequency band which will open up the world. Most hams are eager to be an Elmer (a helper for a new person) so be sure and contact a local club. They can usually help you with some nice used equipment. There are several RV groups with NETS (radio check in and chatting) on the HF bands. 73s Ken KE5DFR Amateur radio operator, 2023 Cougar 22MLS, 2022 F150 Lariat 4x4 Off Road, Sport trim <br />Travel with 1 miniature schnauzer, 1 standard schnauzer and one African Gray parrot
