First Need XLE Elite water purifier sale at REI

I don't know if anyone is interested, but REI has the first need xle on sale at the moment for $89.93 w/free shipping. About $15 cheaper than Amazon and $10 cheaper than I've ever seen one. They also have the xle replacement cartridges (180 gallon) on sale for $46.93.

These are 3 stage .1 micron nominal portable water purifiers (vs filtered). If you boondock much and are near any type of water source, it's a very convenient way to greatly extend your potable water supplies without having to pack it in, waste fuel boiling water, and without a large cash outlay.

Having carried one of these filters for many years I can attest that they are wonderful. I got lazy after carrying enough water for most trips afield and pulled it from my pack thinking just one less thing to carry. Got smarter as a result because I didn't realize giardia was spelled "giardia lamblia" until I read the results from my lab test.

Later,

J

PS Agree this is best price I have seen too.

I get tempted sometimes too. It IS a little bulky, but I keep reminding myself that 1 'bulky' pound for, potentially, endless water is better than a second 2lb liter bottle. For me too though.. my day hikes have a tendency to grow legs. If I'm in an area where 'some' type of water isn't terribly difficult to come by it's just too easy to think, "I wonder what's over there?" and not get back to camp for a few days. :P The running trots are NO joke though. I don't care 'how' tough you are... some of the gunk out there these days will lay a fella out.
