Avoiding FL Toll Way

RVTEN

Recommended Posts

Been some time we were in FL.

I see they have a Toll by Plate?

I am used to paying cash the few times I travel a TW up north.

Heading I75 out of GA. To Miami Airport Hilton.

Map routing takes me I75/I10/ I95.

I see I can stay on I75 all the way also.

Not sure if I will get caught in a TW or TP in that area.

Avoiding the turnpike adds a lot of miles/time to the trip. Might possibly be a break-even between gas & tolls.

If I had to pick, I would go I-75. I-95 through anything south of Fort Pierce is best avoided if possible.

I've got an E-Pass so I haven't tried the Toll by Plate yet, but I did get a letter a few weeks ago saying they were going to try it out. Haven't heard anything beyond that.

We have never driven our coach on the toll road, but our toad from I75 to Orlando was less than $7. How good is your RV fuel economy. Sometimes we spend more in fuel and time to avoid a few dollars in tolls. Check to see what the total toll would be from start to finish, then see how many extra miles you have to go to avoid those tolls. How much extra fuel and time will it take?

Even at the lower prices for fuel, driving a hundred extra miles will cost me an extra 15 or more gallons in fuel. Since we use diesel, that's about $50 to $60. I have to believe the total toll would not be that much. Plus the extra 100 miles would take almost 2 extra hours.

If we are travelling I75 to our son's place in Melbourne we take FL40 across to I95 also. We like the drive through the Ocala National Forest and don't care to pay the $25+ to get from Wildwood to I95 through Olando. I remember the tolls being very impressive when we had our tag axle Damon Intruder towing our Tracker in 2005. But then again we drive US19 N along the coast from Crystal River to I10 rather than I75. US19 is a slow, smooth ride without any traffic, except in the small towns.

It is $5 for the Sunpass sticker, plus you have to set up a prepaid Sunpass.com account. If you drive enough in Florida it is worthwhile to have the sticker and account. We have the $20 suction cup Sunpass and move it between the motorhome and car. You can get these at Publix. Sunpass detects the number of axles, unlike some others. In some areas of the state, avoiding the toll roads is difficult, especially the airports.

If going to Miami, and you don't want to use the turnpike, go to 95 and boogie south. It isn't bad until you get to the Lauderdale area. Will are you about 70 miles east from the 75 /10 interchange but that will take you around the turnpike.

But I would just pick up a Sunpass on the way down 75 at the entry and use the tollway.

Just curious. We traveled the turnpike in May of 2013. We paid the extra toll for a coach pulling a toad, which I thought was ridiculous. However, we passed several places that had signs stating that our plates would be photographed and a bill sent to us. We have yet to receive any kind of invoice. I'm worried that we may be punished if we go there again and possibly pulled over.

Most toll roads charge by the axle, so I'm not sure why you consider being charged for the toad unusual? Or am I misreading your post?

It may take awhile to get the bill for a photo toll. In Denver it took almost a year before I got mine.

If you want no tolls and an easy drive & light traffic take I-75 all the way from I-10 in N Florida South to Miami. It goes down the Gulf Coast to Naples and turns East across the State to Miami/Ft Lauderdale. Easy sailing and no tolls. (Also the beaches are white sugar sand - far nicer than the Atlantic coast beaches.)

Duffman: I-75 has a toll eastbound from Naples to Miami, but not westbound. US41 has no toll going both ways.

You're right about the axles, but I still don't like it. And, they wouldn't believe me when I told them that my toad was just someone tailgating me.

I have been in Florida with Sunpass for the past 10 years almost. It has more than paid for itself in the discounted tolls vs paying cash and you don't have to stop.

You really do not need a transponder, I don't think. if you have your vehicles registered with the license plates it gets charged to your account even if you don't have the transponder in your vehicle.

Yes to Duffman, you will be charged by the axles on the ground when you pass through the toll booth. Doesn't matter how many tires there are. Some trucks unloaded are able to raise a tag axle and they get by without paying for that axle.

I tried to avoid the toll by taking US 27 South a couple times. There is a LOT of stop and go traffic If you are driving at night it might be ok, but daytime is not the time to be in central Florida on that road. It's better south of Sebring, but it takes you a while to get there.

I go N & S from South Miami twice a year in my MH pulling a toad.
I never pay any tolls.

Coming S on I75 take exit 329(Wildwood) SR44E 15 miles to US27S
Take US27S all the way to le Jeune RD S just North of the Airport on East side.
Past airport to Luis Sabines Way W to N. Red RD then right on Blue Lagoon Dr too Hilton

279 miles No tolls and US27 is 4 lane all the way.

Or from Wildwood I75 to FL Turnpike all the way toll 282 miles

Or from Wildwood I75 down west coast then East to Miami with some tolls 343 miles

1Rod, I'd pay the tolls and save time, distance, and consternation with crowded free highways passing through a town or suburb every 10 miles.

There's a lot of confusion here. For the latest information go to floridasturnpike.com For instance, Florida still has cash payment booths on turnpikes, although some do require correct change.

A year ago Dec., enroute to Key West, I blew through a manned toll booth because I was confused by their signage, I understood the toll-by-plate,so expected something in the mail, ticket, summons, something. NADA, nothing yet.

RayIN: There are no cash booths in Miami-Dade county on the turnpike and there are exits on the turnpike in Miami-Dade County that require a transponder, since they do not support toll-by-plate. They do have cameras to send you the ticket, just not handle toll-by-plate. Lots of signs to warn you the exit requires a transponder, but it is an issue if that is the exit you wanted to take.

Bill, their website http://www.floridasturnpike.com/tools_tollrates.cfm must be wrong then where it says cash.
