Heading I75 out of GA. To Miami Airport Hilton. Map routing takes me I75/I10/ I95. I see I can stay on I75 all the way also. Not sure if I will get caught in a TW or TP in that area. Second_Star Posted January 20, 2015 Report Share Posted January 20, 2015 Avoiding the turnpike adds a lot of miles/time to the trip. Might possibly be a break-even between gas & tolls. If I had to pick, I would go I-75. I-95 through anything south of Fort Pierce is best avoided if possible. I've got an E-Pass so I haven't tried the Toll by Plate yet, but I did get a letter a few weeks ago saying they were going to try it out. Haven't heard anything beyond that. How good is your RV fuel economy. Sometimes we spend more in fuel and time to avoid a few dollars in tolls. Check to see what the total toll would be from start to finish, then see how many extra miles you have to go to avoid those tolls. How much extra fuel and time will it take? Even at the lower prices for fuel, driving a hundred extra miles will cost me an extra 15 or more gallons in fuel. Since we use diesel, that's about $50 to $60. I have to believe the total toll would not be that much. Plus the extra 100 miles would take almost 2 extra hours. teacher's pet Posted January 20, 2015 Report Share Posted January 20, 2015 If we are travelling I75 to our son's place in Melbourne we take FL40 across to I95 also. We like the drive through the Ocala National Forest and don't care to pay the $25+ to get from Wildwood to I95 through Olando. I remember the tolls being very impressive when we had our tag axle Damon Intruder towing our Tracker in 2005. But then again we drive US19 N along the coast from Crystal River to I10 rather than I75. US19 is a slow, smooth ride without any traffic, except in the small towns. If you drive enough in Florida it is worthwhile to have the sticker and account. We have the $20 suction cup Sunpass and move it between the motorhome and car. You can get these at Publix. Sunpass detects the number of axles, unlike some others. rstrahan Posted January 20, 2015 Report Share Posted January 20, 2015 If going to Miami, and you don't want to use the turnpike, go to 95 and boogie south. It isn't bad until you get to the Lauderdale area. Will are you about 70 miles east from the 75 /10 interchange but that will take you around the turnpike. We paid the extra toll for a coach pulling a toad, which I thought was ridiculous. However, we passed several places that had signs stating that our plates would be photographed and a bill sent to us. We have yet to receive any kind of invoice. Before I go my sticker, I received a bill for $1.50 plus a $3.50 processing fee. It goes down the Gulf Coast to Naples and turns East across the State to Miami/Ft Lauderdale. Easy sailing and no tolls. It has more than paid for itself in the discounted tolls vs paying cash and you don't have to stop. You really do not need a transponder, I don't think. if you have your vehicles registered with the license plates it gets charged to your account even if you don't have the transponder in your vehicle. Yes to Duffman, you will be charged by the axles on the ground when you pass through the toll booth. Doesn't matter how many tires there are. Some trucks unloaded are able to raise a tag axle and they get by without paying for that axle. I tried to avoid the toll by taking US 27 South a couple times. There is a LOT of stop and go traffic If you are driving at night it might be ok, but daytime is not the time to be in central Florida on that road. It's better south of Sebring, but it takes you a while to get there. Red RD then right on Blue Lagoon Dr too Hilton279 miles No tolls and US27 is 4 lane all the way.
