Charles Skinner Posted February 6, 2016 Report Share Posted February 6, 2016 I have the 2012 Edition of the Good Sam Trailer Life Directory and would like to buy the latest edition. I have found the following on line, ---- Good Sam RV Travel Guide and Campground Directory. ------ Is this the latest edition of my 2012 edition, or is it a completely different "book?" I have read more than a few really, really bad reviews of this latest edition. Do you have this book or know anything about it? If it really is as bad as the reviews I have read, do you know of any other "campground directory" that is better? I need your help! Chas. What may suit you better are the web sites such as allstays (which is also an android app), rvparky (also an app) and consult rvparkreviews.com. This way you can see a wider selection and get reviews from an assortment of people to better assist in your decision to stay or not. You could also check out Passport America and their guide/app. At least with PA you will get a much better discount than a GS. Oh, and yes, I am a life member of GS, doesn't mean I'll be their advocate though. 2gypsies Posted February 6, 2016 Report Share Posted February 6, 2016 It is so large that it's difficult to handle. Folks on the RV.net forum have complained many times about it. It includes lots of travel 'fluff', for big cities. I think nowadays you can do better by just searching for things online. When the Good Sam directory and the Woodalls directory were separate, Woodalls published smaller, regional, directories. We always bought their Western States directory since that's where we travel. I think, however, that since the merger of the two directories, the smaller directories are no longer published. Too bad. We no longer buy any of the paper directories, mainly because we rarely stay in RV parks. When we do, we use the online and app resources Chris n Dennis mentioned. I am in agreement on the Good Sam Directory, money talks..The last place we selected from the directory in Williamsburg VA was a joke, nice advertisement though, which they didn't live up to. scouserl41 Posted February 7, 2016 Report Share Posted February 7, 2016 Our GPS has all the GS parks plus commercial parks, county and state parks and even Walmarts built in to it. Much easier to use, just look up your destination and it shows all the parks nearby, their prices, phone numbers and facilities. SWharton Posted February 14, 2016 Report Share Posted February 14, 2016 I think whether you want one or not is a personal decision. We rarely use ours but like to have paper backup. We are in too many places where we don't have internet or cell service and just like the security of paper back up. It also depends what you use it for. Our favorite app is Allstays. Rvparkreviews for reviewing the cg but it doesn't have many of the cgs we stay at. I try to update it as we travel with cgs if we have service. There are so many cgs that aren't mentioned anyplace, especially the older ones. GS directory probably only lists those that pay for the listing. But then, it is the largest(and only) paper directory around. We also carry the Passport Directory, use that a lot more. I have tried the app but haven't been too successful with it. They bought out the Woodall's guide several years ago so those two are basically the exact same thing. If you want a different one that isn't GS, the only one that I know much about is Wheeler's guide but I've not owned one of theirs for some time now. When we were traveling fulltime we did like keeping a copy of one of the paper guides around as they can be easily used on the road, but they also take a lot of space. It takes a big book in paper to cover the entire country and Canada, but even GS now has a free app for the smart phone and we now have it. If you are a GS member it is only their listing which shows what parks give their member discount. We still carry the paper copy of the Escapee park guide to have their discount parks available as it is small and will fit into the truck we tow with, but am looking forward to them adding an app as well. They are online or downloadable. We did find that GS had the best directions to parks and that our GPS would sometimes give us some poor routes.
