Domicile Help

Recommended Posts

I will be putting my S&B in NC on the market soon and once it sells will be going full-time. Right now I am planning to set up domicile in Florida, if my research pans out. My question is, what do you do for an address between the time your house sells and the time it takes to set up residency elsewhere? TIA

Where are you going to be after you move out of your house? If you'll be living in the RV in NC for a while before going to FL seems to make sense just to change your address to a PO Box until you make the trip to FL. Other than changing your address on your title and registration, driver's license, etc., you would still be considered a bona fide tax paying NC resident until you physically abandon NC and take up FL residence.

Nothing wrong with setting up your Fl mailing address a few months early. Your domicile wont change until you leave NC and make the transition to Fl, but starting to send your mail to Fl wont hurt.

I sold my Ca home 60 days before my retirement/fulltiming date and used my SD mailing address for those last 60 days.

I'd highly recommend setting your mailbox a couple of months prior to selling up. You are going to have to change address on bunches of things like banm accounts and credit cards and having your mailbox set up means you can get started early. Plus you can let your relatives know beforehand.

You can subscribe to a mail forwarding service from FL and receive a mailing address prior to establishing your residency. Change your address on everything a couple of months before you will be on the road and order your mail from them. They will then send it to any address you supply. This could be a campground where you can receive mail and have stopped for a few days, or general mail delivery at the local post office ( go talk to them first). Most post offices will do this, but each have different paperwork, or time periods etc.

I'd say the best thing is to get that mail forwarding address well before you actually need it. It can take more than a month to get all of your business contacts and personal correspondents notified of your new address. Start to do that as soon as you get your forwarding service set up. You can get a lot of help if you decide to join the Escapees RV Club as well.

We transitioned to SD in the fall of '05, lock, stock and barrel, drivers licenses, mailing service, voter registration, vehicle registration, vehicle insurance... prior to selling our Indiana farm...then went back to IN to proceed with the migration to fulltime status, which actually happened in April of '06. Farm did not sell 'till fall of '07. We had lots of time to process address changes, notification of friends, etc. Owning property somewhere does not determine domicile status.

As Kirk said - Welcome!!

I'll "pile on" with the others. Set up your mail forwarding at least a couple of months ahead of time and change your address to that service. Then forward the mail to your house. You will be surprised at what you miss, as mail continues to come directly to your house. You can then start eliminating mail by converting things to electronic.....
