Fender Removal

SuiteSuccess

Recommended Posts

My right fender is faded compared to the rest of the hood and left fender. Tried polishing etc. but didn't really brighten color. Wonder if it was sun or replaced at some point in the past. Opened the hood and can't really tell if just the fender can be removed or if I would have to remove the whole hood to have it painted? Have a really good auto paint shop nearby but they don't have a bay big enough for a semi.

Carl, Did you use a polish or a buffing compound? A real buffer like this https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWP849-7-Inch-Variable-Polisher/dp/B0052RXM10/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1472155239&sr=8-2&keywords=dewalt+buffer+polisher

And a good compound like this https://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-M8501-Mirror-Diamond-Compound/dp/B0002SQVL2/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1472155293&sr=8-15&keywords=meguires+compound

Followed by https://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-Mirror-Glaze-Finishing-Polish/dp/B003LMJP4Q/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1472155293&sr=8-14&keywords=meguires+compound

Will bring the luster and finish back. Problem is that once you do that area, the rest will look bad and you'll end up doing the whole truck....

A real auto parts store should have enough knowledge to steer you to the right products. You probably have heavy oxidation under the current polish and wax and need something to cut it with. If the hood / fenders have never been off the truck, chances are its original paint just sun faded.

One of the guys I worked with had a fender changed. I seem to remember him saying they are bonded and it takes heat to release. It might be easiest to remove the hood and paint it complete.

Have 1 & 3. That's what I did but didn't do number 2 (no pun intended). Will see if I can get some. BTW our mutual Canadian friend, Hone Eagle, cautioned me once before about a good buffer and suggested the polishing. He probably suggested the compounding also and I just forgot.

Nigel,

That's why I asked the question. The fading encompasses the whole fender and doesn't go up on the hood top so it made me think that maybe the fender itself had been replaced at one time.

Suite Just before the ECR I had to paint the right fender. We did it in the backyard. Everything was taped off that we didn't want paint on and tarps spread over everything else. The paint was matched real good so it's hard to see a difference' Next spring the center hood and driver side fender. You just need a windless day and have all of your material on hand. A little buffing after you are done and everything looks good. It only cost the price of paint and material. Pat

Pat, the main problem is the paint available to Carl. All they sell there is an ugly shade of orange.

That shade of orange is predicted to finish ahead of the school known for having a row of bushes in the stadium...and ahead of the school who's mascot tastes like chicken. (Sorry Ray--that streak is ending next month!)

Welcome back David. Not sure it's even worth a comment about a team whose mascot is a bulldog who can't even clean up its own poop. Blue and orange? Please, and a chant of "chomp, chomp". Sounds like Rosie having lunch at Justin Timberlakes house.

Go Vols! And Gig Em Aggies (gotta be loyal to the alma maters).

Pat,

Unfortunately that skill is not in my wheelhouse, wish it was. It would end up like a 4 y.o. trying to paint the Mona Lisa.

  • 4 weeks later...

Update: Followed Jim's advice and started with light compounding, then polish, and finished with Meguires Gold wax. Color is restored but can definitely tell that fender has been painted in the past. Colors very close but don't quite match up. Guess paint shop just taped off that fender and painted it. Took over an hour for just the fender so will do rest of truck in pieces.
