  1. I don't know much about SCC, but I did work for Heath for several years. We were able to do pretty well, since my wife is very good with a buck. :-) We did work year round, however. Unless things have changed Heath has a different philosophy than SCC on this and expects you to go where you are told and work year round. I was never able to negotiate a job like Bob has mentioned. I think if I were going back to this, I might want to consider SCC, if you needed supplemental income, but perhaps Heath might be better if you are relying on this income. Just my 2 cents. Bob may want to put in the SCC perspective on this. I had some experience with SCC's instruments and found them easier to use than Heath's, although not as sensitive. This, can be a good thing, however, since you won't find as many leaks. :-) It wasn't all peaches and cream, but, overall, I enjoyed that work and do miss it, on occasions. The only thing I did not like was working the neighborhood requiring entering back yards with dogs. But, they don't require you to go into a yard if you feel like it is dangerous.
  2. I will jump in with a note...I used to work for Heath. I think the state income tax issue is more a factor of the company's procedures. When I started out with Heath, there was no state tax withheld, even when working in states with an income tax. Then, later, they started taking out state taxes while working in states with a tax. One year I had to file in 4 different states. It was a real pain and, in one case, they continued taking out Colorado taxes when I was working in New Mexico! And, they wouldn't change it or acknowledge any error on their part. 'They' being Heath. Hopefully, this is not an issue with SCC. Hey good luck to all of you looking into this. I enjoyed this work, for the most part. I do know that SCC is more flexible in terms of working part-time, unless something has drastically changed in the last couple of years.
  3. Believe it or not, we had, possibly, a majority of smokers in the crews I worked with. One guy even walked the lines with one hanging out of his mouth, all the time. It IS difficult to carry the flame pack and your oxygen tank, too, however. Any takers, yet, Bob? Your name is familiar to me...did you ever work for Heath? I have to tell you that I do, sometimes, miss the work.
  4. I did this kind of work for Heath Consultants, a company similar to Southern Cross. It is interesting work and I was able to move up to some decent pay. I left because of differences with the company and need to be near family. The only thing I didn't like was dealing with the dogs, but we weren't forced to enter a yard if we had any apprehensions. Sometimes you get fooled, though.
