Need Recommendations for Residential Refrigerator and Install

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

Double post to get maximum exposure.

Our Norcold has failed for the last time and we are going to replace it with a residential.

06 Monaco Windsor with FSW inverter.

We are presently in Yuma and thinking of (Eriks Elite RV) going to Eugene OR.

Would appreciate any recommendations as to refrigerator brand and quality location for installation.

We helped a friend put his in 10 years ago and it is still going strong. He went to Lowes with his measurements and just got the best fit. I believe it was a GE and it looks like OEM. The fit was so good he just needed a piece of quarter round on the bottom to finish it off.

For RV service check out this website for both Yuma and Eugene http://www.rvservicereviews.com/Index.asp

I didn't see "Eriks Elite RV" but did see:

You would probably want a cabinet maker to finish it off if you can't get a close fit so it doesn't look like an afterthought.

What are the dimensions of your opening? What size is your current frig?

Hi JM

It is Elite Repair that I was referring too. Current frig is a Norcold 1210 4 door.

Yes, we will need cabinet work. Another reason we are seriously considering Elite, even though it is 2000 miles away.

I need to look up the dimensions of the present cutout .

I Googled Norcold 1210 4 door and found this measurement: Install Dimensions 63-1/4 inches H x 32-11/16 inches W x 24 inches D

Many of the new RV's have French Door fridges. My personal preference is a french door frig or a bottom freezer as I am in the frig more than the freezer also it is a wider frig area than a side by side. We do not use the ice and water in the door but have a ice maker in the freezer.

Do you have a drawer below your frig or a cabinet over head you could remove? Here are some options at Lowes. Good luck with your project.

Hi JM

Dimensions of the Norcold are 32.4" wide, 63.2" Height. These are w/o trim which I believe is the critical opening measurements.

Height within reason is not a problem since there is open area/storage area below present unit.

Thank You for the suggestions.

With a counter depth fridge and the doors and hinges removed It mite fit through the front door. I have taken them through with a little maneuvering. Last winter I did one that we slid it across some ramps that I carry for loading a vehicle.

You need to figure out what make and model you want and will work on your inverter. Then look where you can buy one and get it delivered. Home depot in Florida would not take it into the RV. Sears took the doors and hinges off, placed the fridge inside and installed the doors in we wanted them to.

then I normally use the rear access openings on the RV to attach the fridge for travel along with at the front on the interior bottom of the fridge.

I have done several conversions to residential refrigerators, along with the wood work.

we are going to be at the North Ranch in Congress Az. about 7th to of January for the rest of the winter. I am a SKP commercial member 469 and do mobile RV repair.

Some pictures of the fridge area would help for what you are planning.

What about depth? I think most residential refrigs are deeper than the RV refrig and will stick out.

Yes, all of the choices JM posted would stick out way too far in most RVs. Counter-depth, 24" without the doors, is what you need to buy. These end up under 30" deep without the handles.

................. One advantage of purchasing in Oregon is no sales tax.

I purchased my Samsung on the web from a place in New York. No sales tax and free shipping. Had it shipped to the installer.

We just purchased a Samsung 18 cf, counter depth, french door...Model RF18 something. We purchased it from Appliancesconnection.com and had it shipped straight to the installer without a hitch. Very easy and smooth transaction. We paid $1,199.00 - no tax or shipping. Beware that a lot of the manufacturers do not warranty a fridge when installed in an RV. I know for a fact from personal experience that Frigidaire does not. I have inquired of some of the others, and they do not, also. I inquired of Samsung and was told they will. Another tip - make sure to plug in the fridge BEFORE you install to see if it works. We didn't do that with our Frigidaire, and wouldn't you know, it was the one in a million that was defective. That's how I know Frigidaire doesn't honor the warranty if installed in an RV. Good Luck.

Carriage 5th wheel is no longer in business but many of the issues apply to all RV's. Their Carriage Yahoo E-group contains some excellent RV discussions that are generic and apply to all RV's. you don't need to be a Carriage owner to subscribe but you do have to request to subscribe to help prevent SPAM etc.

One of the subscribers did an excellent write up on his recent RV Frig swap. He uploaded a 7 page PDF document in the file section of the group with step by step photos and text descriptions "how to replace a 4 door Norcold RV frig with a Samsung residential frig" that is very detailed and thorough if you want to check it out. The file is titled RV Refrigerator Swap 2014

Just guessing....

Many Yahoo Groups require approval for new subscribers to prevent automated attempts and SPAMMERS. Since the moderators are generally volunteers and the groups are free they may not be as fast as fee based sites? I have had good luck with my Yahoo experience since my first introduction to Yahoo Groups thru the Boomer BOF in 2000. Since then I have joined several others; not to say that the periodic changes and updates don't create occasional confusion but the benefits for me have outweighed the hiccups.

No need to go to Oregon. Check out Apache RV in Las Vegas. I've seen some of their custom work and it's second to none. Not sure what their web site address is, but a google search will probably bring it up.

Just added "rv" in the URL I think this is what you are referring to: http://www.apachervservice.com/

Cute Youtube video on the site showing some of their work.

Hi Mariner

Thanks for the suggestion.

Erik (and all the others) at Elite are ex Monaco folks and worked at Monaco until they folded.

Erik has also worked on our coach many times with absolutely fantastic results.

Erik and the folks are highly recommended on multiple DP chat boards.

For all these reasons we are in Oregon and having them do the work.

I have this unit but the fan no longer works and I have not been able to find the parts to repair. I LOVED the grill feature and would get another but they no longer make them.

How do you like your GE CSA120 Advantium Microwave? Does it have a grill feature?

Thank you
