HELP PLEASE! STINKY WATER!

Pretty sure I got problems with the water holding tank but wanted to get you guys thoughts and ideas for cures...started noticing a strong rotten egg smell a couple of days ago. The black and gray tanks had both been emptied recently so I was sure a full grey tank wasn't the problem. So today I just turned the cold water on in the shower and let it run and the smell came back...so I'm guessing the fresh water storage tank and all the lines need a good flushing. Now, what do I use to treat or clean the tank? Thanks so much for any help given!!

Your P-traps should take care of the gray water smell. When I got a rotten egg smell in my rig, I originally thought it was a gray water problem. It turned out to be a problem with my batteries. I had some bad cells in my batteries and they were gassing out. Check to make sure that your batteries are not the problem.

If it IS the water, you just got some w/high sulfur content ...not too unusual in some parts of the country. Drain thetank & lines & flush w/good chlorinated/city non-smelly water and you might be good. If the smell persists, some bleach or better yet spa/hot tub chlorinating crystals in the water, flush all the lines, drain & refill w/good water will do it.

I agree that you just got high sulfer water. Probable from a well and not a municipal water supply. Just empty, use the standard bleach concentration for cleaning your tank. High silver won't hurt you just smells and makes the hot water smell worse.

Most of the issues should be corrected now. We are still working on some minor bugs.

The bleach treatment will sanitize your fresh water system, but if you have algae growing in the system it must be treated differently. Art Knapp's website has the details.

My battery bank failed last week and the off-gassing set off the LP alarm, good thing since I have no/little sense of smell. The vapors are corrosive to metal and electrical wiring- AND explosive., the odor is merely offensive.

The other place to look for the smell is the p trap of the sinks and tub. To see if it is the fresh tank generating the odor fill a glass without letting water down the drain and smell. No odor? Then not coming from the water tank. In the bathroom is where the smell frequently occurs. And in this location the problem is likely the p trap. Bacteria use oxygen in the water until it is gone. Then the strip oxygen from the sulfide in the water making hydrogen sulfite, rotten egg smell. Water can hold so much gas in solution. When the water is disturbed the gas is released. So there is usually no smell in the sink until you turn on the water and be d over to spit toothpaste and whamo you get rotten egg. Similar problem in shower. Fast fix bleach in trap. Longer term, clean scum from p trap. No bacteria, no smell.

Saw this often in homes and everyone thought it was the we provided. This would fix the problem in the trap.

One more thought. Water can come naturally from Wells with rotten egg, hydrogen sulfite. That one is creating the odor in the fresh water tank is an indication of a very dirty tank that needs sr how i would terious cleaning. If the smell is from the well water it can be removed with chlorine. I believe it was 1/2 part chlorine to one part hydrogen sulfite. I will ponder how I would introduce the chlorine.

My ponder was how to treat stinky well water with out using the fresh water tank. Perhaps obviously using the fresh water tank and dosing the tank with every fill is the easiest. However if one wanted to use the water directly a dosing mechanism would be necessary. There are many available methods. Not sure if they make sense though at this scale. If someone is interested I will try and assist.

Last summer my water would stink no matter which faucet I turned on. I'm on a well at my "Summer location." I use an external filter with the cheapie throw away filters that can be purchased in all different "flavors." I turned off the water, opened the filter, dumped some water out then poured in a cup of bleach. I turned on the water then ran all of the faucets for a while. Presto, no more stink. I guess it was like "heavy chlorination" that some municipalities use. No hassel, almost no cost, cheap thing to try before getting too crazy with other procedures. Sorry I'm so late getting back, but perhaps this may help others.

Stinky water is a common problem. Most of the time it is a alga that likes hot water and starts in the hot water tank but will spread to all the water system. The best thing is to do a sanities and flush just like starting in the spring.

Not sure I can help but I've learned NEVER to rinse or put anything egg like down the sink. I eat boiled eggs once a week, and after rinsing shell off two eggs I ended up with an egg smell that took two dumps, rinses to get rid of.

Kind regards
