Casino Boondocking

We'll be headed toward the Riverside area in a week or so from Yuma. We've stayed at the Morongo casino in Cabazon, CA but it was years ago. So we're looking for some up to date info regarding boondocking in the casino parking lot. We Google mapped the casino and saw a couple of rigs in the parking lot. Since there were so few rigs we're wondering if overnight boondocing is allowed. Can anyone share some up to date info? Thanks, Dennis.

The "Overnight RV Parking" website indicates that overnighting is allowed as of the most recent report (Nov. 29, 1914). Among other detailed information about this location it also says:

Park in lot G, behind (N of) parking ramp. Not level; with slope downhill toward the S making leveling difficult or impossible. Very quiet, security cameras. Shuttles to casino available. Dumpster at shuttle stop. Free wi-fi in hotel. Two reports recommend Serrano's restaurant in casino. Morongo Gas Station nearby accepts major credit cards & has Dump Station; 2012 Dump Station rate: $15.00, or free with 50 gallon fuel purchase.

I've always found this website to have the best information on overnight parking spots.

We spent the night there about 5 months ago and we were in a level lot. Security was great, we felt secure. On another trip we overnighted at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio. This is a level dirt lot, looks like some people are here full time. We ran out of steam and chose not to continue to Morongo.

When we were southbound on I-5 in December one of our options was to overnight at the casino near Corning, CA. That particular casino has an RV park but not a cheap RV park. So Sue called them and asked if parking overnight at their casino was ok.

Before I tell you the results of that phone call, we stayed in the parking lot on the return trip along with about 100,000 assorted 18-wheelers, travel trailers, horse trailers, motor homes and tent trailers. Every single one stayed overnight. No one said a word. I am convinced that you could park there a week and they'd never figure it out; that parking lot is right next to I-5 along with a big fuel stop and keeping track of everything parked there would take a staff of 15.

But on the phone call Sue was told that we would be asked to leave at midnight.

I am not sure what to make of that... but you cannot trust a phone call, apparently. At least not in Corning, CA.

Thanks to everyone who replied. We appreciate it.

We have stayed at the Rolling Hills Casino RV park many times. Unless their fees have increase it only cost about 20 or 25 dollars. Not as cheap as free but not terrible. Their RV sites are all pull thru and utilities have always been great. We try to stop on the days that they have half price for their buffet.

The last time we stayed at Morongo we ended up leaving about 3 in the morning because we were instructed by security to park in among the trucks. We tolerated the noise as long as we could but finally gave up and left. Hopefully they will let us park somewhere besides where the trucks are. :)

Thanks again everyone. Will post an update after our visit. Dennis

I've overnighted at Morongo on several occasions. I'm not sure where people who report truck noise are parking, but the large upper parking lot behind the casino is truck-free and rarely crowded. It's lighted, shuttles run very frequently through the lot, and it has been very quiet every time I've been there. The lot does slope a bit, but it's just for overnight, so it's easily do-able.

$28 a night according to their web site (http://rollinghillscasino.com/hotels/rv-park/), This is expensive for just a short overnight for us as we were on a schedule. The alternative would have been a highway rest stop area. I really appreciate the SKP "boondock" sites when traveling. Just having a relatively safe place to rest is a real plus. Wish there were more RV parks that embraced this idea but I am grateful for any casino that does it. I remember the days when we didn't have casino parking lots - or any parking lots - that welcomed us.

We're still puzzled by the telephone response telling us we'd be asked to leave the parking area at midnight. My point was that you can't trust phone calls every time.

I have run into statements like this before, and when they are done face-to-face you can detect the "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" aspect of it. They are CYA and/or liability issues that they really have intention of enforcing, but are required to make.

Rosita,

We, too, were parked away from the trucks. And we would have stayed there if the security folks had not come by and instructed us to park where they were. We remember the parking lot being a bit of a slope but certainly nothing that would cause any problem. Hopefully we will have no trouble. Thanks for reply. Dennis

WDR,

$28 bucks is starting to smart a bit. Certainly nothing in the area to justify that sort of price. They will probably start pricing themselves out of business. We tried parking in truck area once but it was so hot we finally moved over to the RV park for the electricity. Appreciate the info. Happy Travels. Dennis

  • 2 weeks later...

Well we ended up not stopping at Morongo. We stayed at a friend's place in Hesperia. I did take a quick look at the place as we passed. There definitely is a major slope to the parking lot. I could easily see that from the road. Anyway thanks to everyone who replied. Safe Travels, Dennis.
