Interstate 10

I'm sure this has been asked before and I tried a search without luck (unless I want to dig into every thread that pops up that seems to have nothing to do with the search).

I have never traveled the I-10 stretch between Mobile Ala and Houston Tx. I keep hearing about stretches of I-10 that will shake your teeth out on that particular leg. Anyone know exactly where these section(s) are, and any alternative routes to avoid those areas? Not overly concerned about traffic, just the bumps.

Thanks.

Ya just can't RV without a hitch.....!

I-10 is a good road to travel. As far as the road condition goes, just slow down and adjust your speed until you find your rig sweet spot. For me at 65 mph it felt like I was going air borne where at 50 mph it was a gentle roll like a boat on the ocean. Some people might say that lower speed was not safe, but it was better than beating my rig to death. Just watch your mirrors for people behind you.

Just drove from Gulf Shores AL to Baton Rouge and set the cruise to 62. Some of the bridge approches and departures are a little rough, but I've been on worse. Tomorrow I have to go from Baton Rouge to Houston so I'll find out what thats like at that time.

We travel have travelled I10 from Gulf Shores, AL to Beaumont several times. A few years ago we changed

to exiting I10 west bound in Baton Rouge going north to 190 west which turns into 12 in TX. If we are

headed to Livingston we'll take some back roads when we get to TX. From Livingston we continue on the

back roads north of Houston and join I10 west of Houston. Greg

Area between Beaumont TX and New Orleans is very rough. Last trip I made there in my dually towing our home, it was so bad that my head made contact with roof. I am not a tall man either. That was when I finally decided to get an HDT.

It still sucked in April of 2016 (less than a year ago)...

I did it last year and it SUCKED also. Thank GOD that I optioned the Moryde IS on my 5ver. I think I went down to 50-55 mph and was still being sprung up and down. This is by far the WORST section of interstate I have ever driven on.

We were told about the road condition over the border .

in louisianna in December 2012 by a couple of blokes at the KOA park in San Antonio and they were not wrong,

there was a section not far over the border (about 30 miles or so that was as rough as guts, after it seemed to improve all the way to New Orleans.

WE were in a class A rented motorhome, maybe with a bit less air in the front tyres it may have been a bit better, but we commented on the fact that if you lived around here you would be rebuilding your suspension annually

We went from Central Texas to the Florida Keys a couple of years ago. I chose to jump up to IH-20 and take it into Mobile, Alabama where it joined IH-10. As I recall the roads were fine and there is some very pretty country in northern Louisiana and Mississippi.

After being shook so hard we thought the rig would fall apart 2 years ago we decided on our big West/East trip last year to stay well away from I10. We went further north and took 82 across the northern end of the state and had a great time, nice towns varied scenery, no traffic.

A quick look at online maps, Houston to Baton Rouge, looks like I could do US90 east out of Houston, pick up US 190, then SR 12, ultimately taking me to Baton Rouge. There I would pick up I-12, eventually getting on I-10 on the far east side of La.

It is 20 miles longer than using I-10, but the downside is it adds TWO hours. Thinking it might be worth it!

This is the route. US 190 is a good highway. Most of it is 55mph. Lots of places to stop and eat or get fuel. It is a pleasant drive. There is major road work on I10 from Beaumont to Hwy 73 on Winnie. It'll be there for 3-5 years.

I have to wonder about a good share of the posters in this thread : just how fast were you trying to drive ?

62 to 65 is our normal speed on I-10 50/55 was average and it still kicked the crap out of us.

The route you have picked is not as you saw it on the map. From Houston to Beaumont on US90 is okay, but US90 effectively ends in Beaumont. At that point, it is over 50 miles due north to US190, they do not intersect.

If you indeed do want to take US190 across Louisiana, then I would suggest you use IH10 from Houston to Vidor, which is about five miles east of Beaumont. There, you can pick up Highway 12, which will eventually join up with US190 at Ragley, LA.

From Houston to Beaumont on IH10 is not bad, certainly as good of a highway as US90, most of it is six lanes and fairly new. The four lane 16 mile part from Winnie to Beaumont will eventually be upgraded to six lane, the first phase of that project has just begun.

Hope this helps.

I slowed to 55 - 60 MPH and was lucky not to get run over by people doing 80 around me... I-20 going west through Shreveport this morning was even worse! I've also driven back roads in Louisiana - the state just has infrastructure problems.
