Adobe Unleashes Big Updates for Flash, Reader, Acrobat

RV_

Recommended Posts

Adobe is rolled into Windows 8/8.1 systems and gets updated with the Windows updates.

Excerpt:

"Adobe today released sizable updates for Flash Player, Reader and Acrobat, patching 18 and 34 vulnerabilities respectively in the software. None of the vulnerabilities in any of the three products, Adobe said, are being publicly exploited.

The Flash Update for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux patches vulnerabilities that would allow an attacker to remotely take control of the compromised computer.

Adobe Flash Player 17.0.0.169 and earlier versions, Adobe Flash Player 13.0.0.281 and earlier 13.x versions, Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.457 and earlier 11.x versions, AIR Desktop Runtime 17.0.0.144 and earlier versions, and AIR SDK and SDK & Compiler 17.0.0.144 and earlier versions are affected and patched by this update, Adobe said.

Most of the vulnerabilities open the door to code execution, Adobe said. The update addresses four memory corruption vulnerabilities, one heap overflow flaw, an integer overflow bug, three type confusion bugs, and a use-after-free vulnerability that allow an attacker to run code remotely and control a machine."

Derek my computer updated just after midnight this morning. About an hour ago I turned it on again and Immediately saw an Adobe update box. I clicked the download button and it downloaded Adobe Flash Player update and McAffee security scan plus. Very irritating when you have no opportunity to decline McAffee.

On the first update installation screen that came up on my Win 8.1 box, there was a pre-checked box for the McAfee product. I unchecked it before proceeding and it did not get installed...

Guys,

If you go to control panel nowadays in both Windows 7 and 8 and you will see viola Flash player click on it to open and then click on update, and then click on check now.

There have been fake Adobe update popups that were used for malware in the past. I prefer to initiate it and when I see Flash has an update and pass it along here, I just update it from there and it is done. Takes a couple of minutes and my wife won't be wondering if the update notice is real or not that pops up. Try it now and you'll see how easy it is to manually update as soon as the update is announced.

Edit:

This is getting ridiculous. Above it says viola Flash player when I typed Adobe. It seems my spell check auto correct has become possessed!

The direct download for both an initial installation and an update from Adobe includes the McAfee junk, Derek. I always check where a link is really going to go before clicking on it.

Dutch have you tried running Flash update from Adobe Flash entry in control panel?

Many folks leave control panel on "category" in the upper right hand corner of control panel, and I forget that. If you click on "category" a menu drops down, select either small or large icons and you will see all main control panel items on the page, like the old Control Panel view. One of them is Flash. Click it open and a tabbed screen pops up, then click the update tab. I haven't seen that McAfee trash ware for a while. However, only my SH's main 'Pooter has Windows 7, my old Windows 7 computer is being factory restored in preparation for Windows 10 then a sale. I just did hers and don't think it came up. One of them keeps offering Chrome and to change my browser. I forget which it is so automatic to uncheck them.

No, I haven't tried that, Derek. I don't use Win 8.1 a lot on this dual boot box. My "daily driver" OS is PCLinuxOS. The Win 8.1 install is mainly used for supporting friends and relatives machines.

That's what I'm talking about, my wife's desktop is a Windows 7 box. But I am no longer doing any outside support if I can help it. My and all other Window 8 and up boxes all update Flash via Windows Update automatically so no need to manually do it, and no bloatware added.

I've been bitten too many times by bad automatic updates, so I don't allow them any more. I want time to do some research first before updating.

Good policy Dutch. Most folks won't follow up like we do. My ASUS tablet got a Broadcomm driver update this last time that caused me to have to manually reset the adapter. I knew what the problem was because it was an optional update for a driver, and I allowed it. When it had tobe reset twice, I just went to device manager, and rolled back to the previous driver and solved it.

I do my Windows updates manually too. Soon that will be harder as they will be spread out over the month. I have mine set to ask first. Then I will usually check the further details about any updates on the list that are optional or look odd like a 32 bit download on my 64 bit machines.

Have a good weekend.

YW bud. I didn't notice it until a few weeks ago in Windows 7 then checked in 8.1 and it was there too! I keep control panel and Task manager, along with five or six other programs and shortcuts pinned to my desktop. The reason for that is I can click once on task manger and end Windows explorer or any other program that gores crazy and stop contact with the net instantly. Or if it slows down check what programs are active and which are hogging resources. I know it is just my Malwarebytes premium most of the time but I like to know quick just in case.

Hope that helps bud!

Hope someone can help. My Adobe Flashpalyer keeps crashing when using Firefox. Can someone please tell me how to fix it? Thanks!

My first action with something like that, is to uninstall, run CCleaner, reboot, then download a fresh copy. I'm still a novice computer-user, so that may not work every time.

Chief,

You said you refreshed FF? Was that an update from FF to the latest version? See Mozilla link at bottom.

Try Windows Internet Explorer. Click on IE (Internet Explorer) and try to use that. Does it run OK or does it crash on the same page? I use IE not FF as FF hs issues too, regularly, and is vulnerable too needing patches at times. If FF is the issue and IE runs fine . . .

The reason I ask is that Windows 8 and 8.1 has Adobe Flash integrated/embedded into Windows, unlike Windows 7 and earlier where Flash was a separate program and had to be updated on its own. Windows 8 and 8.1 updates Adobe Flash automatically when you update Windows each month. If at any time, you got pop up, telling you to update Adobe outside of Windows update, it was bogus. If you clicked to download it there is a good chance it was loading an infection.

But please answer the questions so we can press on to a solution.

Have you done Window updates this month already? If not, regardless of the reason, do all your Window updates as it always runs a malware detection program that looks for the latest most prominent infections.

There are two programs from Adobe many computers have and both need regular updates to work. One called Adobe Reader opens pdf files. The other Adobe Flash runs online animations and special effects.

I would be sure Window is up to date, check if IE works without crashing. If so, use it. Here is an Adobe forum you can register to use and explore similar issues and perhaps if an Adobe issue you can find it.

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1456682?start=0&tstart=0

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1424468?start=0&tstart=0

Here is a page from Mozilla who are the company that produces FF with their take on it.:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/adobe-flash-plugin-has-crashed?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=The+Adobe+Flash+plugin+has+crashed

Any FF users having resolved this issue got any input here?

I stopped using Adobe Reader a long time ago based on your recommendation. I use Foxit and have been very happy and it makes one less Adobe product to be considered about. I still have Flash. Are you still using Foxit?

Yep,

On my Window 7 machines. My Windows 8/8.1 machines have their own built in default pdf reader that is an app and after some resistance I finally learned it and like it even better. My SH has a Window 7 machine that will be upgraded to Window 10. My old backup desktop is being readied to sell along with our last dual core Window tablet.

Thanks for all the help. I am using IE without any issues with the exception it is very slow at times. FF just won't cooperate and it to keeps crashing. I have updated my Windows, reloaded FF and Adobe and it keeps crashing. I guess for now I will have to stick with IE. Thanks again!

A few years back I had a problem with FF crashing-big time. A new, clean install fixed that. Save your bookmarks first. In fact, I think RV was my source for that.

Great Chief,

I'll consider that case closed enough as you may need to read the FF forums for Flash add on module crashes FF. Or a fresh install.

I went to Control Panel but did not see the Adobe reference? Where is it located in the control panel on a Win 8.1 machine?

Make sure your Control Panel is set to large or small icon mode of display, rather than categories. If you have the icons displayed, one of them will be Flash Player. Just click on it.
