Hey all you birders out there, have we got a deal for you!! In the search for something different we decided to volunteer at the GCBO, Lake Jackson, Texas. It's kind of southwest of Houston.

It's small, about 37 acres with a full-time staff of three and one part time office manager. The gate closes electronically at 4:30 in the afternoon and reopens at 8:30, of course we have access after hours with an opener.

Duties are minimal, mostly mowing when needed, cleaning and refilling the hummingbird feeders, other bird feeders and corn for the ducks. So far we just go along do whatever needs to be done. I spent three days just cleaning up and organizing the maintenance shop. Meanwhile my spice of life was doing some data entry and organizing the store for an up coming sale.

We spent Saturday (11/21/15) with the bird banding crew. It was really interesting seeing as how we knew nothing about it.

Our motorhome is backed up to the Buffalo Camp Bayou, we have three canoes and a kayak available along with a small fishing pier.

The community of Lake Jackson a vibrant and thriving area with lots of things to do and see along with all the major shopping available.

This is a low key volunteer position, with a full hookup site and great people to work with.

We will be leaving any where from the middle to end of February and they will be looking for a couple to replace us, if you are interested you can us, Mike & Sue, roadhobos@gmail.com. We would be happy to pass your info on up the line. I would be willing to send along photos of the GCBO and the surrounding community if interested!

Thanks, keep smiling,

Mike & Sue

Mike & Sue, it is great to hear this report! We have volunteered several times at San Bernard NWR which is not far from you and we shopped in Lake Jackson and really enjoyed it there. We used to see the bird Observatory and wondered about it but you are the first to report on the volunteer experience there, as far as I know. If you happen to be square dancers, I think that you will find the Lake Jackson Promenader's to be a very friendly and fun group. Also don't miss the Sea Center, TX.
