I need a boondock location in Bend, OR

The Day's End Directory has listings in the area.

http://www.daysenddirectory.com/index.php

I've tried to make heads or tails out of the Days End directory but I'm simply not smart enough or my mind doesn't work that way.

Here's an actual example that I copied under the "Fair Use" doctrine:

17.9, go N, 1 mi on L, Badland Rock, sm gravel trailhead pkg lot (BLM). No signs prohibit O/N. Smooth paved rd. Bob Mxxxx #110158 viewed Sep 15.
17.9, go S, 3/4 mi on L, Horse Ridge Rec Area (BLM). Gravel pkg lot for trailhead. N43 56 45.4 W121 2 35.7. Tables. No signs prohibit O/N. Bob Mxxxx #110158 viewed Sep 15.
How does that book work. Why can't they simply show a map of the area with points on it?

On US20, east of Bend at mile marker 17.9 (as highways are generally marked every mile, this would be 1/10th of a mile shy of mm18) there apparently is a road (not all are marked on BLM lands).

For the first one, go north for 1 mile and on the left (west side) there will be a small gravel trailhead parking lot.

For the second one, go south for 3/4 of a mile and on the left (east side) there will be parking for the Horse Ridge Recreation Area.

I imagine no maps in order to keep the costs down along with people printing out the directory (or parts of).

I depends a lot on how close to Bend you need to be.

Most of the area around Bend is either National Forest or BLM land. This is especially true of the area to the south of Bend, which is mostly the Deschutes National Forest. Most NFS and BLM land allows for dispersed camping (check with the local ranger if in doubt), for free. There are also numerous forest service campgrounds in this area.

One of the places we like is called Bull Bend Campground, here https://goo.gl/maps/bkfCRkTsVjp.

It is a Forest Service campground(no hookups) on the Deschutes river. If you look on Google earth you will see that there is also several places on both sides of the river, near this campground, where you can boondock.

Unless it's changed, the Day's End directory is available by membership only. It used to be frowned on the pass it out.

Look east of town on the National Forest and BLM lands. That does not get as much use as the areas close to the crest. Call BLM in Prineville or Forest Service in Bend and ask them for dispersed camping areas.

There is lots of public land in the area and most of it is FLAT. You should be able to find a spot.

No, nothing has changed...it's still "members only" (i.e., you have to pay a nominal fee to get the listings).

I'm not sure what the problem is in reading the listings...pretty straight forward as far as I can see. Lasttrucks' explanation is spot-on.

As far as maps are concerned, there IS a map at the Day's End website. However, it shows only the city/town corresponding to the Directory listing, not the exact location of each listing. But, *most* listings also include GPS coordinates, so you should easily be able to find it on a map.

I copied and pasted the above GPS coordinates into Google Earth and it shows me satellite images of exactly where this 2nd one is located. I probably could past this into my smart phone map an get the same thing. Google Maps should show the location as well.

Holstein,

I was hatched in Prineville (30 mi E. of bend) and our family has resided in Central Oregon since before it attained statehood so you might say we are locals.......

The potential problem that faces boondockers in central Oregon in the summer is the potential of elevated fire danger prompting the Forest Service and BLM to close ALL camping except in improved camp grounds and sometimes they give NO NOTICE and just boot the boondockers out.......Not Good!!

We have owned properties in Bend for too many decades but our properties have suffered “ingrowth” where very small lots have been developed next door and now our locations that were out in the country are now almost in the center of town......Bend has exploded and continues to grow like a run away cancer......we now pay more in property taxes in six months than I paid to purchase the properties.....such is progress....

Anyhow IF you are unable to find a place to park I might have a driveway that you could park in a pinch.......the location is surrounded by houses but on most days when the traffic is normal (Bad) I can walk downtown as fast as I could drive downtown and good luck finding a parking spot downtown at anytime ….......4th of July is always insane in Bend.......the only “locals” that stay in Bend during the 4th of July week are the ones that are locked up in jail......

Don't get me wrong …...Bend / Central Oregon is a great place to visit......several million folks a year prove that point ….....it's just a bit wearing on us old geezers that remember when Bend had three big saw mills and NO traffic lights......and very little traffic......

If you run out of options PM me and depending on the size of your rig you might just be able to stay in the thick of the crowd......I have been planning to be out of Bend on the 4th week but that is always subject to change but my being there is not critical.

Drive on..........(Join the crowd.......4th in Bend)
