  1. this might help - nothing to say they'll continue to do it this way, but WAY too many (military) claim residence in Texas, yet never live here. Texas is one of the few states that permits you to hold a TxDL w/ an out of state address printed on it. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/RSD/VI/texasRegVeh.htm
  2. Regardless of the year or texas county, there is no emission testing on Diesels. Texas as a whole is changing the inspection (sticker issuance processes) --> http://blog.chron.com/thehighwayman/2014/06/dmv-prepares-for-sticker-shock-of-losing-inspection-tag/#23504101=0 My suggestion, because of this change, is that you renew your tags for as long as you possibly can (up to 3 yrs).
  3. sounds like you'd be better off with a Conversion Truck / Garage Coach & flat towing the jeep.
  4. its a buyers market....some guys over at truckconversion.net are building their own, surely you could do it too - build the house/trailer and the garage coach...with a small rest area in the coach for longer distance travel. me personally....i park on a HARD surface and ride in/out. anything w/ enough luxury (for me) is not off road capable ! i did my yrs of tent camping - i want a warm shower & cold beer at the end of my day (where ever that might be)
  5. Why not buy something like this.....plenty room for bike, jeep & more....lots of capacity w/ great power. http://www.racingjunk.com/Toterhomes/182153810/2012-SHOWHAULER-AND-TRAILER-COMBO.html
  6. im 42 front to rear, 60+ w/ the jeep we run houston to the northern tip of virginia (winchester) several times a year...NEVER been stopped (40 foot is no reason to stop us). ive been stopped ONCE, in texas...for no front tag on the coach...got a warning (fwiw i dont run front tags on ANY of our vehicles, its a personal preference). my previous post #457 lists the restrictions/limits by state
  7. what bob says is true - but how many race haulers w/ a 30+ foot triple axle stacker do you ever see pulled over. in my own GREAT state the MAXIMUM speed for travel trailers is 60/55 (day/nite) but you dont see that enforced EITHER. most states have a maximum rv length of 45 feet. http://www.woodalls.com/articledetails.aspx?articleID=2377513
  8. NONE of this makes sense....travel trailers dont even makes sense really....you can fly / rent a car & hotel for a lot less than youll ever spend on this stuff...and the camper sits just as much as the truck. Theres all kinds of ways to justify this stuff....safety, comfort...hell some people spend MORE in a lake or SKI house and only get to it once or twice a year - ive got a <rolling> lake, beach, mountain/ski home when NEW (2011 f350) pickup trucks STICKER for $70k (and dont get much more than 12-15mpg) its EASY to justify the class 8
  9. I guess i havent done an introduction... Wife & I (mid to late 40s) - 3 teens (blended marriage) who are out of the house (if i have my way) by next summer Oldest is in his 2nd year as a corp member at Va Tech (his Navy scholarship makes the coach a possibly - and an excuse for a tailgate part) ! We near Houston, Texas. Im new to the HDT/Conversion Truck - but not new to diesels (83 MB 300CD & 04 F350) Ive been watching this forum and asking questions for well over a year. We prefer the styling of the Converted Truck (haulmark/renegade/showhauler/etc) over a pusher (i am of the opinion the TRUCKS are better built, safer, more powerful than a specialized or modified pusher/frame) We recently purchased a <somewhat> renovated 04 Haulmark 42' single screw w/ the MBE4000 and 12speed Meritor Smart Shift (love that tranny) OUR "coach" will afford us the room to go where we want, with our 95lb old english sheep dog - and HAUNT our kids !
