We spent the same time frame there last year. Overall enjoyed our experience and will try and go back someday. Once warm weather hits please be aware of the yellow flies

They are brutal and I still have scars on my legs and one spot that is still not 100% healed. Ron's were so bad I had to take him to Dr. See Dave in maintenance and ask him about the special soap he orders. Everyone swears it works. Enjoy your stay you'll have a good time

We are at the Rappahannock River Valley NWR, eastern VA. Our original commitment was to administer the hunt program and leave first part of Jan. However we are staying until end of May. Makes it co venient to see Ron's new Dr at Georgetown University and I have to chance to see thru to completion an Environmental Ed program for our local schools. So far weather has been cooperating

Mention of the "light show" leads me to believe that you are volunteering at the Okefenokee Swamp Park run by the nonprofit cooperative association on the North side of the refuge near Waycross rather than at the refuge run facilities located near Folkston that some of the other responders to this topic are talking about.

We are always looking for opportunities in VA (daughter is in Richmond). Could you post some details about Rappahannock NWR?

Thanks.

Just learned that due to some unexpected medical problems we won't make it to Okefenokee this spring :-( Very disappointed, but "medical problems" seem to be coming more often and closer together nowadays. Anyway, my problems kind of leave the park in the lurch for this spring. I know Ranger Gooch would appreciate any help. You can contact her at

We have decided to opt out on any of the 24 hours per person per week sites.. Being retired, we are not looking for a part time job.

We finished our Okefenokee Swamp Park Christmas light show tear down in record time, working with another couple we were done in 10 days. The Gen Man had expected 4-5 weeks. It was a good experience and I was able to spend a couple of days with the onsite blacksmith making knifes and tomahawks out of railroad spikes. The wife made hand made soap in the pioneer village and I even drove the onsite train.

We visited with Grace at the NWR park and she showed us their volunteer setup which was also impressive but did not appear to be as much hands on as we had experienced. Grace did say she expects 3 month commit and was booked for 2016 and even into 2017.
