Trading coaches

A question for those of you who are full-timers without a home base. When the time comes to trade coaches, what do you do? Do you limit yourself to a dealership where you can trade in your old coach on the new one or do you try to sell you current coach so that you can buy from a private individual? If the latter, what do you do for housing and storage of your stuff while you are between coaches?

If it is not a trade in you can have an issue selling or disposing of your old one. You could do consignmnet but even that can have issues. You can get tied down for a while. I don't know what value your current rig but if it is low enough you might be able to donate it for maybe a tax right off. This can be a problem. I'm in a TT and I was able to sell my old one in about 2 weeks for I think $1200. as I didn't want to get stuck with it or have an issue. I was in a ideal place to sell it as a "deer camp trailer' cheap. But I had only paid $4000. for it. Depending on the true value of you rig it could literally cost them to get rid of yours and they will fold that into what you pay for your new onel.

I just looked back and saw you have a 93 Foretravel which I am certain has value. Add that to your question and it may be easier for the folks that "know" advise you.

A lot depends upon your financial situation and what you are dealing for. If your RV is financed, you probably will have to deal with a dealer and do a trade. There is little doubt that it would be the easiest way and many dealers have provision for a buyer to park the old & new RVs together and spend a couple of days transferring your belongings. Buying from a private seller will require cooperation between you and the seller. You may be able to work something but it will probably mean some sort of temporary quarters if you must sell your old RV first.

When we moved to our present coach we bought at a dealer. We parked them next to each other and spent the weekend moving while they were closed. Worked out great.

But you could always rent a storage unit to hold your stuff while you make the deal.

When we put our current coach up for sale on consignment we bought a 6x10 enclosed cargo trailer and were able to fit everything inside. This was a 45' full timing rig and the trailer was PACKED! We stayed at a campground and did tell them what we were doing. We will use the trailer to haul the Rzr so it worked out for us, but you could rent a trailer or u-haul type truck for a few days.

And pm me if you need boxes. I can tell you where to get some new free boxes.

It's still possible to rent houses; even houses with garages. A sizable percentage of the US population rents their home. I was amazed to find that renters in New York actually shell out big bucks to remodel their rented apartments. Of course, they were long-term renters but when they told me how much they paid for their remodel ($50k twenty years ago) I was floored. Both UN workers in Manhattan.

Just finding a well traveled street in an area where you might find buyers and looking for a rental home with a big driveway and a garage might make it easier to sell a large RV. Then an ad in the local - and neighboring - craigslist with directions to come see it.

We took the trade-in route where we could park the two units side by side for moving from one to another. That also gave us time to discover any small fix-it items in the new rig before we left the dealer.

Another option is to move into an extended stay type motel while between rigs if you want to sell the old one before buying the new one.

Parked side by side with the doors facing each other and added a section of ramp between the two doors so we could just walk across since our knees wouldn't have survived the up and down of both sets of RV stairs.

We bought our Teton from a private sale and transferred everything from DRV to Teton at rv park we were in. Rented a dry site for x number of days. Took DRV to PPL in Houston and got it sold on consignment.
