JC and Angie Posted June 7, 2016 Report Share Posted June 7, 2016 Good day to all I'm getting my 2016 cabriolet in late July. It's going to be one the first cabs in the Dallas area. Black on black on black with the sports package. Being delivered to Salt Lake City cuz that's were will be. The question is, there is only one tie down point exposed on the drivers rear. Has anyone found the passenger side threaded hole hidden behind the bumper cover??? If it's there, I'll have them cut a hole to expose it. If not we're stuck with using the hitch and a raiser to pull it up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks gang. JC 2009 Volvo 780. The DW liked the 16" 8 spoke Y wheels and the new navigation/entertainment system in the dash. Will see if I can research a bit more. Might have to call Mercedes and see if they have frame view. As long as it is pulled straight onto the truck, a single pull point is not an issue. Looks like it might be time to re-think the winch hook up. Well that's not good news. Well it's not that bad. I'm going to have a hitch installed for bike rack purposes. So I'll design and mfg a reviewer hitch riser bracket with lots of support for pulling the car from the center. Easiest solution me thinks. SuiteSuccess Posted June 8, 2016 Report Share Posted June 8, 2016 JC, Apparently the older model European Smarts had only one threaded hole on the front while the American Smarts had two. The front bumper support could be changed on the European cars with the American support giving two on the front. It may be that the front bumper support could be changed out on the 2016 if it only has one (support was bolt on) and a second front hole drilled and you could front load. I front load my 2013 and drilled a second one inch hole on the front and bought a second hook. Fortunately did not have to change support, Might be an option. Second choice might be just taking off the back support and fabing a second threaded hole of some type on that support. Sure if you were near BMZero he could do it for you. But my opinion is that a straight-pull single point load is going to put a LOT of stress on that hook point. I have no data to prove that, but looking at how those hook points are set up I'd probably not do it. And a side pull to that point would be even worse. Just my opinion. Like I said - I have no stress data..... I agree Jack. Obviously they (Smart) believe it will handle an occasional pull but I wouldn't want to trust it for a long period the way we load and offload. I know some in our group do use the single point and they may give their opinion. A boat in rough seas can have acceleration rates in excess of one G. The tie down points are designed to hold the car in place, at a 45 degree incline, a 2000 pound object would require under 1400 pounds of force to move up the ramp. On a 35 degree ramp it would be about 1100 pounds. Remember you are not lifting the car, only pulling it up an incline. That is what we are going to do with our truck. Then you'll have a center anchor point--probably for about the same price is having something custom fabricated.
