2016 smart cabriolet.

Recommended Posts

Good day to all

I'm getting my 2016 cabriolet in late July. It's going to be one the first cabs in the Dallas area. Black on black on black with the sports package. Being delivered to Salt Lake City cuz that's were will be.

The question is, there is only one tie down point exposed on the drivers rear. Has anyone found the passenger side threaded hole hidden behind the bumper cover??? If it's there, I'll have them cut a hole to expose it. If not we're stuck with using the hitch and a raiser to pull it up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks gang.

Will look at ours tonight. We have a 2016 black on black prime coupe with the sports package as well. The DW liked the 16" 8 spoke Y wheels and the new navigation/entertainment system in the dash. The new twin clutch 6 speed is a winner and is one of the reasons we went with a new car.

The rear has only one plug and threaded connection? Interesting, all their 2016 advertising pics show two plugs. Will see if I can research a bit more. On edit was older model pics not 2016.

JC,

Found some newer advertising pics which showed only single rear plug. Might have to call Mercedes and see if they have frame view. Could dealer get mechanic to jack up car and either look or remove bumper and look as part of the deal?

OK, Pulled the rear bumper cover off. The only threaded hole in the bumper support is on the drivers side in the rear. In the front, you only have a removable plug on the passenger side so I would assume that is the only side with a threaded hole for the hook. Looks like it might be time to re-think the winch hook up.

Congrats JC and Angie, keep us posted as to what you come up with as we will be purchasing a new smart sometime later this year.

Well that's not good news. Well it's not that bad. I'm going to have a hitch installed for bike rack purposes. So I'll design and mfg a reviewer hitch riser bracket with lots of support for pulling the car from the center. Easiest solution me thinks.

I'll let you know how it turns out later next month

Have you found a bike rack for the 2016? I started looking for one a while back without success. Haven't looked lately. Just wondering if they are available now. I know you have the resources for building your own.

JC,

So have you found a hitch for the new smarts? Last I researched it there were not any available. hopefully that has changed because otherwise there is no way to load other than driving it on....We have been holding off on a new one because of that.

JC,

Apparently the older model European Smarts had only one threaded hole on the front while the American Smarts had two. The front bumper support could be changed on the European cars with the American support giving two on the front. It may be that the front bumper support could be changed out on the 2016 if it only has one (support was bolt on) and a second front hole drilled and you could front load. I front load my 2013 and drilled a second one inch hole on the front and bought a second hook. Fortunately did not have to change support, Might be an option. Second choice might be just taking off the back support and fabing a second threaded hole of some type on that support. Sure if you were near BMZero he could do it for you. Seems he can figure a solution for just about anything.

Rocky & all

I did an online chat with Curt on Wed. They also said, nothing available. When asked if they could notify me when they had the design ready to sell they indicated that they didn't have the capability for such a notification. I guess pedaling will have to do for now.

How much problems is single hook loading/ off side loading.

I don't know the answer to that. But my opinion is that a straight-pull single point load is going to put a LOT of stress on that hook point. I have no data to prove that, but looking at how those hook points are set up I'd probably not do it. And a side pull to that point would be even worse. Just my opinion. Like I said - I have no stress data.....

I agree Jack. Obviously they (Smart) believe it will handle an occasional pull but I wouldn't want to trust it for a long period the way we load and offload. I know some in our group do use the single point and they may give their opinion. Also as you mention the winch line needs to be "in line" as an angled pull would be bad juju.

That is why I was wondering. Smart seems to think it will be good. I don't have a dog in this but I can see me buying a new one later. I put a lot of miles on mine. I don't want a Smart with 100k+ on it.

All the cars that come on boats are tied down by the hooks front and back. A boat in rough seas can have acceleration rates in excess of one G. The tie down points are designed to hold the car in place, at a 45 degree incline, a 2000 pound object would require under 1400 pounds of force to move up the ramp. On a 35 degree ramp it would be about 1100 pounds. Remember you are not lifting the car, only pulling it up an incline.

Let me know how all the single pull stuff works out for everyone. I would not try it as a "habit" after seeing the bent and twisted body (underparts) from a single point pull. Granted - it was at an angle, not inline.

Depending on how big of a hurry you're in, you might contact Roadmaster or BlueOx for a baseplate. Then you'll have a center anchor point--probably for about the same price is having something custom fabricated. If they decide they want to offer a baseplate for them (they have for the existing Smarts), Roadmaster will give you the tow bar free if they can make the design using your car as a template--a deal for the first one in the door.
