WiFiRanger GO and Mobile - Impressive Range

Recommended Posts

We bought the first generation of WiFiRanger and Boost Billet. Currently the Boost still has the small omni antenna (have the new larger antenna for it, but have not installed it yet). Our first WiFiRanger was replaced with a unit just prior to the GO2 (Sorry don't recall the name, may have been the GO?)

As I also upgraded to GO2 when I purchased the larger RV antenna, I have not bothered to upgrade to the latest software release. In May, I'll install the new GO2, add the larger antenna to the Mobile Billet, and then mount this to the mast of a hand cranked Winegard Sensar antenna, to get it up off the roof a bit, and allow the longer RV Billet antenna to lay horizontal to the roof while traveling.

We were in Brantley Lakes, NM, just North of Carlsbad, NM. The Verizon connection of my droid was lost for a period of time, so I thought I'd take a look with the WFT Boost. Was surprised to see two Escapees Ranch and one KOA signal available.

Eye balling Googles Maps, I'd estimate the Ranch is between 10-15 miles away. If I defaulted back to just the GO, could not see any these signals.

It's a straight flat shot from The Ranch to Brantley Lakes, so pretty good conditions - but still pretty dang impressive.

Just info sharing:)! Best to all,

Smitty

Smitty:

I'm glad that you were able to connect at such a long range, but that's not something we can promise on a regular basis! :D

I strongly encourage you to update your firmware. The current 7.0 software has multiple improvements and new features relative to any earlier versions.

Did you connect to that signal and use it or just "see it"?

Just saw it, never attempted to connect. As the 3-5 mins that I was poking around, was enough for Verizon to be available again (good enough to stream from...).

Just thought it was interesting to see signals at that distance - good point on if it was a 'usable signal'.

And for sure Joel - while nice to know, it's not something that can be expected at all times:)!

OK, that makes sense. You should be able to "see" that signal from there, but use of it would be challenging even if I set up something specifically to capture that. There is clear LOS there, but getting a useable signal at those distances is always very difficult if you only control one end.
