Brad & Jacolyn
Good Morning, I have found something (actually someone told me about it) that cleaned up the headlights and the faded trim on the Volvo and the Smart car. It is called Wipe New and I got it at Walmart for about $20. I tried to attach pictures but they are to big so I didn't. It was easy to use and it did an amazing job. The Smart has not looked this good since 2012. The head lights are crystal clear now. The kit came with a 2000 grit pad for the lights and then wipe it on. The black trim looks new also. Plus it is supposed to last for lots of car washes. We will see. Just putting it out there in case you have the same problem. Alie&Jim's Carrilite
The "Wipe New" has held up for 6 months so far on our truck. All the black molding around the door handles, mirrors, etc had bleached out to a grayish color. The Wipe New brought the color back. For our headlights, I used the 3M kit with the pad that mounts in a cordless drill. I clear-coated ours after sanding and buffing them as directed. jkoenig24
I've heard that Sam's Club has a service that treats headlamps. Supposedly with a five-year guarantee.
RV_
Yep, I am going to use Sam's since they do have a five year warranty and it only costs $29.99. I did mine once and in this weather here I am going to let them do the labor. They use a sealer (I asked) so it should last five years. AllenF
I used automotive clear on mine. Sand them with 800 till the yellow cloudiness is gone, tape them up, then clear them. Automotive clear will protect them better than they were when new because the uv rays won't deteriorate the plastic again. It was very easy, mainly because I'm an automotive painter but I'd bet any painter would do them for $30 on the side.
RandyA
This article is from Consumer Reports. Like Allan, I have refinished mine with a high solids clear urethane and hardener as used for auto paint clear coat. I know of no other clear as durable (lacquer, acrylic, etc.). I do have a question for Allen: How come you didn't do both headlights rather than one? bmzero
Can a person get spray cans of the good clear coat at an auto parts store? You can go to a local automotive paint supplier and have them mix you up some of clear (with hardener). Most paint stores sell a small aerosol sprayer they can package with it. rickeieio
For better or worse till death do us part. 31 years and counting. Yup, it'll be 42 years come late July. And that's not counting the 5 years we dated before that. But I must admit, she has some redeeming qualities. She buys me motorcycles and tolerates my cigars. And more to the subject matter, she encouraged me to swap out the headlights after polishing the lenses proved unsatisfactory.
