How to Questions for Windows 10

DJW

Recommended Posts

The DW (I never use FB) has a question regarding Facebook on Windows 10. On her Win 8.1 machine when she clicked on a picture that had been posted on Face Book she could right click on it and it gave her options on what she could do with it. Like save it to her laptop. In Win 10 when she clicks on a picture of our GD that shed posted the DW no longer has the option to save it or do anything else with it. Does anyone have the answer to this question? She has done a search on bing but everything comes up regarding Win or Win 8.1 no Win 10 info yet. All the toolbar options are now gone?

It is a combination of how the image is put into the page and some functions that Edge doesn't have.

I checked some photos in an Escapees thread and the images could be copied.

If it is important, then use FireFox or Chrome. There are projections for additions to Edge in Fall that may include those functions.

My wife used Edge and proved that if you open the photo link (left click) the page with the photo does have right-click options.

Thanks. I believe it is a corrupted app file. She went in using Edge and went to facebook.com page logged in and went to the picture and the options were there. She was trying to do via the FB app. She had downloaded the FB app from the Window store. I had her delete the app and she is going to reinstall it.

UPDATE: When she tired to reinstall the FB app from the Windows store, she got a little review that had been posted that this app had not been optimized by windows 10 yet?

Windows 10 is officially only three days old, but it's already getting its first security patches. Microsoft just rolled out three fixes for hacking exploits. We've known that Windows 10 would be a whole different animal when it comes to updates, and we're already seeing it in action.

The three patches are dated July 29, the same day of the official Windows 10 release. However, they actually correct flaws Microsoft fixed in older versions of Windows earlier this month.

If you're using Windows 10, there's no need to take any action.

Microsoft has made Windows 10 updates automatic, so as soon as you're online, they will download and install.

Expect this to continue.

You DO NOT need to use FF or Chrome in place of Edge. You can use IE 11 which is also available in Win 10. If you wish to set IE 11 as default in place of Edge use Internet Options (you can find this in CP) Go to the Programs Tab and set IE as default.

When Edge is open, use the Options button, Upper right corner and choose Open with Internet Explorer.

Up and running fine since the 29th when we upgraded. My first weekly system image is underway. Now that I am using Windows Edge is there any reason not to delete IE? After the new system image is made I am going to create a system recovery disk.

At least in the short term, there are still many web sites not completely compatible with Edge.

My question was just the opposite, since I'm happy with IE11, why would I complicate life by switching to Edge, it doesn't seem to offer anything that's important to me. For now, I'm glad they kept both optional and didn't force us to use Edge.

I'm sure pleased with 10. It just seems so much faster than 7 or 8.1. Shoot, I have even been using Edge and it's so much like Chrome I can barely tell the difference, that is, as far as speed and being just plain simple. Edge has a few adjustments to make such as editing favorites. It can be done now but, I believe, will not be simple enough for a number of people. I suspect all this is more a learning curve than anything else. I've only one program that did not carry over and that is Calendar Creator. I've had it since DOS(with an upgrade or 3). I'll get the disk and take care of that later. I'm using it in Bootcamp on my Imac and it is just as solid as a rock so far.

Edge is rated as faster than IE 11. Also more secure, but I suspect that is because it does not allow add-ons at this point. That is the biggest reason why I still use IE11 most of the time. The browser seems to get more bloated and more insecure as neophytes that do not know better allow all sorts of add-ons and toolbars to load themselves into the browser when they install useless apps they do not need, but look pretty. When mom was alive I found 4 separate add on toolbars on her browser, plus several other useless add-ons which just slowed her browsing down and made her much more susceptible. Unfortunately MS can not make one browser for power users that do know they are doing, and one browser for the masses that have no idea what's going on. Most of us here posting in the Computer group are members of the former group. Most of the people using PCs are in the later group.

On a given day I will use FireFox, Chrome, and now Edge. That is enough to handle web site idiosyncrasy since there are still diverging standards in the World Wide Web.

Edge does not yet support Java. That, alone, may be enough reason to hang on to IE a bit longer.

The more "custom" one needs their browser to be, the stronger the case for continuing to use what you already use. At least until Edge starts to flesh out a lot more.

Like Mark, I will use all 3 and sometimes, Firefox, on any given day. Different tools for different reasons but as I spend more time on my NOte 4 phone and Nexus 7 tablet I like that Chrome keeps all my bookmarks (old and new), passwords and extensions congruent on all systems.

Having said that, the problem Medico mentioned about toolbar and add-on bloating is easily handled on Chrome with one or a combination of several extensions that let you quickly and easily turn them on/off as needed with a click. The simple solution is a toggle that flips them all off or back on but I have really come to love one called SimpleExtManager.

SimpleExtManager lets you setup multiple groups to enable/disable with a single click. This is really handy when my bandwidth or speed is not good (like right now) and I can just toggle off all the exts that do a lot of realtime online activity. Things like shopping assistants, Grammerly, Deeper researching tools that prefetch based on current contexts and such.

At present, I just have 3 groups:

  1. Main: What I like to run with as my normal default set of apps/exts when I have fast connectivity.
  2. Performance: A stripped down set of tools for the least overhead on the screen and over the I-connection.
  3. Shopping: A set of tools to help me research and shop for the best fit/price when I am looking for something to purchase on or offline. Most of the time, these kinds of tools are in the way, particularly when I don't have a great connection or I am metered. But they really help get a quick perspective about quality, value and applicability when I need it.

These can be toggled anytime but some might require a page refresh to apply to a currently viewed page or tab.

I still have not seen any such capability in an IE add-on. Sure wish I could find something like this for booting windows into different sets of operational states. Actually, Glary Utilities does have something windows startups that is similar but not quite as elegant.

Edge does look promising but currently I really find it gets in the way more than helps because of the lack of flexibility at this point. Still, it may eventually become the goto user interface.

Great thread! I love being a follower for a change. We are in the RV and comfortable having set up all but sewage RV hookups on the side of my workshop, and draining Gray as we go. Bought the macerator pump and will be trying our full Black dump 100' and uphill about four feet of elevation to the oxidation pond. I now have my regular 50 mbps Cable running to my fiver until the new house is set up and ready to move into in about another month/month and a half.

Today I cloned my older Windows 7 Toshiba 17" laptop's drive to a new Samsung EVO 256GB 3D V-NAND Technology SSD. It only has 4 GB of RAM which I will fix tomorrow to bring it up to 6 GB of RAM. It does not have 6 GB SATA 3 but still boots in under 12 seconds with a SATA 2 mobo.

I chose this for my Windows first test because it is an older Windows 7 laptop and I have an image of it done with 7 that will work regardless for a factory restore then bring that image on board to avoid five years of windows 7 updates before I sell this laptop. It is also not registered to me and was factory restored with no password as a local account, the user name is owner. The SSD will be removed and the original hard drive will be reinstalled before I sell it unless the buyer is willing to pay $100 bucks more for the SSD.

So tomorrow or the next day I'll hope to join in with lots of questions. In the meantime it's great to have more activity here from the other techies, and the regulars that are all ahead of me with this upgrade for a change. We are living in a construction area with our hoses and cables running everywhere and I need to mow around it all and do some two week neglected weed eating etc. Thus Windows in a backset. It is so hot and humid in the triple digits and high 90s in which I've dig a 200 foot waterline trench 12" deep by hand with some young hired labor, and di the electric 30 Amp hookups then getting the carports moved and the trailer with all our household goods moved out back until we can move it into the new place. So at night I've been too hot, sunburned, and too tired to do anything requiring attention to detail.

Thanks for all the info and help folks. It really helps to get several different perspectives to catch up.

I just had to change the home page browser to Chrome as it would not hook up to free wifi at McDonalds with Edge. I have not found IE in the programs on W/10 Pro. May try to download it later!

Well RV we will have fun here until you come back on. Good luck getting everything you need set up!

When you upgraded to Windows 10 did it download Win 10 Pro? I had thought I had Windows 8.1 Pro on the DW's machine which is the one I upgraded. I thought it showed that it downloaded Win 10 Home. Did you upgrade to 10 Pro after the fact? If so how did you do it?

I used the USB creation mode. When you select the version to load onto the USB, you have a choice of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Home H, Windows 10 Pro, and Windows 10 Pro N.

Not sure what the N versions are, choose Windows 10 Pro. We were running 8.1 Pro and 7 Pro.

The N versions are euro specific to handle the countries where lawsuits were brought against MS because IE was unavoidably embedded in the windows versions.

There are only a handful of countries where it might apply, if one so chooses.

I did not use a USB create mode. What I understood was the that the upgrade would determine weather you had the Pro or Home version of either Win 7 or Win 8.1 and download the correct version to your machine. Is there anyway I can go back and check to make sure I had Win 8.1 Pro on the DW's machine and then upgrade it to the Win 10 Pro?

I did everything online and it correctly saw my 8.1 pro which had been upgraded from 7 and then 8.0 to 8.1 pro.

Absolutely no glitches at all. It seems to be faster, cleaner overall and a solid OS as far as "I" am concerned.

I am more of a diddler with the computer any more as opposed to those heavy hitters on this forum or others that

have to make a living on their machine, so take it for what it's worth. I should probably add that my Windows is on a partition on an Imac computer running with Bootcamp. I was more than a little worried as to how well it would upgrade concerning the being on Bootcamp, BUT no problems at all.

I loaded mine from a Win/7 Ultimate operating system from a USB stick I made on my Win/8.1 computer. It asked for a key which I found on the 7 computer using a program called Belarc Advisor that another forum member sent me a link to. The 7 computer I bought at a pawn shop has a non genuine Microsoft program so I have until the end of the month to revert it back to 7 Ultimate as Windows can't be activated! Wiered as I looked on the Microsoft webste that it didn't matter.

Speaking of Edge, I really like the looks and feel, if only it supported add-ons. I have remembered passwords at least 3 separate occasions but each time they seem to disappear during reboot. I have sent FB to MS about this. If Edge would maintain my PW's I would use it exclusively, but for now I generally use IE 11 for my internet activities. Edge will be a great browser once they fix a couple of things. I used the method shown here to disable ads in Edge. It works quite well since AdBlock Plus does not work in Edge. Be aware this is not for neophytes.

What if you want to reset your computer to it's Win 8.1 setting and then start over? I may have screwed up my windows 10 upgrade activation by trying to update to Win10 Pro with the product key that was provided in a earlier post.
