thegoodwins297 Posted March 17, 2015 Report Share Posted March 17, 2015 Hubby and I went fulltime in June 2012 because it was more cost effective way to travel for the company where he works. He is an operations manager for a drilling rig supply company. They wanted us to relo for southwestern PA to Houston, TX and then he would have to fly out to every week to visit one of the many branches in the company. He didn't want to be gone from me or our fur babies all the time, so he pitched living in the RV fulltime to them. It is less expensive and gives us more flexibility if he had to change which branch he had to visit. It worked great...the company paid our RV park rent and we had a company fuel card. I had even started to work remotely for the company March 2013. We were living the dream while still working fulltime. We had signed up for the mail service at the same time but cancelled it last summer as we stay at the same RV park when in Houston so they allowed us to keep a mailbox here and a co-worker picks up the mail. Fast forward to now....the oilfield supply company we worked for closed due to the drop in oil prices and the drilling rigs stacking. My position ended on Feb 20th. Hubby is still working until mid-May to liquidate assets. Reality is hitting me as now will be responsible for our own RV park fees and our own fuel. Sorry...got lighted think about it. We will park it and live in the in-laws drive way for a few months until we see what happens. I am trying to become a freight broker agent which is independent contractor and can work from the RV. It looks like hubby is going in with a couple of others we worked with to open a direct ship business using one of the vendors we used where we worked. It looks like it is coming together. We started back up our mail service....even got out old address back. I am looking forward to taking it slower when we hit the road again. We would drive back and forth to southwestern PA every 2 months from Houston, TX. We would do that trip in 2 days....all interstate. We never had time to stop as it was leave work early mid-afternoon on Friday get to where we are going so he could be in the office Monday morning. With the company they are starting, we will stop in towns as he stops at businesses to drum up sales. At least our travels will be tax deductible. Sorry this was so long, it has been quite awhile since I have been on. Hope to run into y'all as we finally get to slow down. So kind of you to share that as one door has closed you have found others to open, in a way that might be more positive for you and Dan in your FT travel experiences We hear you on the oil situation being here in Alberta. I remember when prices were dropping at the pump last Fall and the general public was getting all excited about it, and I said, look at the big picture it's bad news if you look deeper. Lost jobs in the sector, leads to lost jobs in all the services and providers to those workers, it snowballs all the way down - our Real Estate Market is starting to suffer now as well. We have been blessed to do a lot of extended times out on the road, and subject to any unforeseen changes personally, are looking forward to shaking the shackles that bind and hitting the road FT at snail pace in less than 2 years now. We said the same thing when the prices started dropping. You are right......it doesn't just affect those directly involved, it affects indirectly as well. Companies that we purchased from to supply the rigs are struggling. Where we are originally from, they started building more hotels to for the rig workers. Car dealerships bought bunches of white work trucks, the local Peterbuilt dealer bought a bunch of water trucks. it is sad to see. God is opening doors for us and it is our responsibility to recognize this and walk through them. We have put our faith and trust in him to guide us and help us make wise decisions. Alie&Jim's Carrilite Posted March 18, 2015 Report Share Posted March 18, 2015 We were working as gate guards in the Texas oil patch. When it slowed the brakes went on quick. The group we were with stacked 2 rigs in 3 days. I'm guessing they have 1 operating still. We were released Jan 21 and couldn't find a company that had any gates opening. With the yards full, we decided to head to the valley area and have fun for awhile. Currently in Mississippi with Southern Cross Pipeline integrity services.
