Ideas for boondocking, Grand Jct to Moab and Canyonlands

We'll be traveling through Grand Junction, Co toward Moab in a few days. We're going to take 128 and follow the CO River.

Do folks have suggestions on good boondocking spots? This will be our first time seeking out spots and I'm not sure whether we'll just "know it when we see it" or do we need to do more planning?

From Moab we'll be heading toward Canyon Lands. We'll probably be in the general area for at least 30 days and we don't intend on moving more than 2 or 3 times so we can really explore the area.

Thanks in advance

The BLM is strict in that area so if you see an open spot don't assume you can park there. Here's their information on dispersed camping and on the right side is also some regular campground information. We like Ken's Lake. The sites are big.

North of Moab just a few miles on the East side of Highway 191. Willow road I think is the name. Been there several times, and you can visit both Arches, and Canyonlands from there, plus sooo much outside the parks as well. We carry a Jeep, but never seen so many Jeeps in one place as in Moab. If you don't have an off road vehicle, and want to, you can rent one close by. If you do, get an off road book. We will be back once again (Lord willing) this late winter, and I get excited just talking about it!

TONS of dispersed camping on your way. Your in Dispersed camping nirvana! Just off hwy70 heading out of Grand Junction before the Utah border is Rabbit Valley. I think it's Exit #1 but not for sure. Pull off and camp there. In Fruita (10 miles North of Junction) there is Dispersed camping on 18Rd. In Moab as mentioned go to Willow Springs Rd.

  • 2 weeks later...

Goosenecks is a great place, but once you leave the paved road, the road is very ruff. It's worth the slow drive to backup and camp looking over the river. Our first time there was going to be for one night, we left a week later, after hiking, and exploring the area, so much to see. The Honaker(sp) trail, moki dug way, sand island, Valley of the Gods! When we first visited overnight was free, it is now $10, or $5 for us "old folks". Man, we like that area, can't wait to return this winter.
