Inspection Service in Fargo, ND

Found a truck and need to have it inspected. Anyone know of any inspection services/places in the Fargo area? Truck is at RDO Truck Center, they have a dyno nearby so that can be taken care of but just need a physical inspection done before I fly up to look at.

Thanks

John Stearns at RDO looked after that for me.

They could also do a lot of the upgrades and changes for you.

If tires are close to 50%, ask salesman o replace at his cost.

Not sure how old it is but I'd have them replace the Injector harness at their cost. This may not be on Jacks list, it may not have reared its' ugly head at that time.

All filters and fluids. I'm not saying you will or should get this done for nothing but maybe at their cost. Also remove commercial 5th wheel plate.

I hope you are happy with it..

Roger,

Thanks for the input. It's a 2013 so not sure if the harness is an issue, I'll do a search and see what I can find. Was planning on having them take off the commercial plate, I'll see if they will change all fluids/filter at their cost. Was also looking to have them so some ECU changes, no speed limit, no idea shut down, configure to owner operator, slowest speed for cruise, starting gear to 3rd, etc.

So did John have a third party inspection done?

Did they single it for you also?

Thanks,

Bob

Did a quick search on harness leaking and saw that Jack Meyer had his replaced on a 2015 D13, looked like he had to pay for it, but I would have thought a 2015 in 2016 would still be under warranty. Also saw posts on D12 & D16 with a similar issue so I would also have thought Volvo would have fixed this by now. So it appears to affects all years and engines.

Thanks

No they didn't single it for me. Seeing as it was being brought back to Canada, it had to remain stock. Removal of the 5th wheel plate was all that was done before returning to Canada.

RDO had a pretty exhaustive check as I recall. So I don't think they used an outside source.

3 yrs old... probably about half a million miles??

We did discuss singling but that was just talk.

The harness will become an issue in time. I think most would agree to do a pre emptive strike and get them to do it at their cost if possible. There are other things susceptible to failure which could be dealt with at the same time seeing as you have it opened up.

Batteries, buss bars, fluids, shocks, egr valves, tires are some of the things that come to mind.

Maybe wheel and deal for things at a reduced price..

What model??? I shift?

ON edit, the truck will probably not be under warranty. The truck fleets trade them in when warranty expires or close to it.....Providing it is a fleet truck.

The wiring harness was about 1500 to purchase and about the same in labor....however other things were done when the engine was opened up. Ie, there is a small 6" long horizontal running hose about 3/4" diameter just above the alternator. It was gishy so that plus some other items were dealt with at that time.

IMO it is better to deal with them now than be disabled on the side of the road in the middle of the trip.

Jack may have done a pre emptive strike on his as they frequently crop up and can be very spendy if left in attended.

Yup 571k, 730, iShift. They have a few of them. Last I saw was these were grain haulers, not sure if that's good or bad.

I will have to start to gather up all the items and place them in a list so I don't forget. Maybe their cost for parts and pay for labor. Don't know how much dealers are willing to wheel & deal.

Thanks

Here's my slant on things. Mine was one of 61 returned grainhaulers. Every 3 yrs they get turned in. I asked John to keep an eye open for the pick of the litter. I'm happy with it. Just over 500,00 miles and I've put on just under 30k miles.

The grainhauler brass is pretty particular how the truck is driven. Leadfoot it and fuel consumption goes up as well. This can be checked by the firm . IMO, maintenance schedules are met, they can't afford to be down a truck.

Also I got a smokers truck but RDO did a treatment of some sort and to this day, I have never smelled smoke and I hate the smell of it.

You'd be pushing it to ask for free parts and labor. These trucks will sell anyway work done or not. Be too pushy and they may brush you off.

Tires, batteries, shocks, Serpentine belt, hoses, buss bars, filters, fluids, injector harness, egr valves plus a bunch of other items could be replaced by RDO, the know the truck and its history.

You most definitely want to do an HID upgrade. My lites were aimed down 7" at the 25' mark but even then they were lousy.

Driving or fogs....I'm not convinced. There are still the old High beams not in use which with Randy's help could be wired up for that application maybe.

Even if you got the parts at cost and a slight break on labor you would be ahead.

Mine was a 229" wb and a 326 rear end. Plenty big enuf for the Smart.

Sleeper is used for storage.

You will need a Jackalopee and hitch of some sort, Trailersaver for just over 3k or the one made by a forum member.

It would be a LOT less expensive to do the conversion yourself rather than getting a turnkey operation..

You would buy the truck

Get the mechanical items dealt with before the deck goes on for easier access

Get the deck made by? Herrin perhaps.

That's pretty much it.

Save 10k at least probably a lot more.

If I can do it so can you.

Roger

This has come up before and is a current topic of discussion.

FYI RDO will provide a 30 day transit permit. You will still need to get insurance. I can't remember what I did for a plate. One truck I bought in the US, I took a plate of my pickup and stuck that on. There is a 10 day grace period for vehicle transfer. Insurer at the time suggested the plan.
