Hopper 3 Local Guide Data

Recommended Posts

So...I finally broke down and changed my locals on my account to San Francisco. I full-time in a motor home. I started in Seattle and had no problem with PTAT and the locals channel guide. On my way to SF, I changed locals once in northern California for one night and really didn't pay much attention to the guide.

I got to San Fransisco yesterday and changed my locals. The new channels showed up in the guide and showed the correct network affiliation. For the current time and the next half-hour, it shows what is actually on and what will be on in 30 minutes. Once past that, it is still showing the guide for the Seattle locals.

For example, in SF, the ABC affiliate is channel 7. According to the guide, at 6:00 PM is ABC World News. At 6:30 PM is ABC local news. At 7:00 PM is CBS Evening News. Currently the Steelers are playing the Colts now on channel 11 (NBC) and will be on channel 5 (CBS) at 7:00 PM.

I just spent a painful 40 minutes on the phone with Dish Tech support trying repeatedly a few things that I assume were to force a guide download, none of which worked. We have been here overnight, so I assume the guide was downloaded last night, so I'm not sure that's the fix either.

Any other RVers out there that have seen this (or anyone else for that matter)? How did you fix?

By the way, it looks like the software updated on 11/7.

I do not deal with with DISH NETWORK tech support over the phone, I use "chat" and click on topics about "Programming" usually have the locals up within 10 minutes after less than 3-4 minutes of "chat". Been working well for me for the past 3-4 years.

Your Locals should switch in a few minutes but t takes time for the Guide to download and there is no way for force a Guide update that I know of. You can try running a Switch Check but that seldom helps.

With PTAT, the Guide needs to be downloaded for the PTAT period before the PTAT will be scheduled. When we change Locals, we usually skip expecting PTAT to work for the first night. That would be like before 3:00 PM.

We just use manual timers as the programs appear during the evening. The Guide is usually just ahead of the start of the programs.

Because of that PTAT delay, we don't change Locals until we have to. That is sometimes two or three days of moves. We don't care where the Locals are, just that we have them for PTAT.

There is nothing the Dish CSRs can do to change this. It is just the way PTAT schedules itself.

You mean the Hopper3 doesn't do a guide update on reboot like the VIP units do?

NO, it takes almost 12 hours to do a complete download. Otherwise it is 30 minutes ahead of the program.

I also read you did a change in route. did you requests a reset for your SF locals?

I got my locals (I have been dealing with Dish for a long time). The only thing new is the Hopper 3. Before that was a ViP722 and ViP211. The issue isn't getting locals it's the guide. I changed the locals at 3:00 yesterday. As of 7:00 tonight, the guide is still wrong. For the current hour, it shows the correct programs. Anything past the first hour, it shows the locals for Seattle. Seattle was 2 changes ago. Take a look at channel 7. ABC news is on at 6:30 and CBS News is on at 7:00. A pretty neat trick if it could happen. Is this normal?

Every time we change Locals location, the Guide was caught up and PTAT ready by the next day.

To chirakawa: yes the Hopper 3 does not do a refresh of the Guide after a reboot. It is one of those Pro/Con things. It means a Hopper 3 is back online faster but there isn't a way to force a Guide update.

I've had "No Program Info" show up in my H3 after changing locals . . . but displaying the previous locals in the guide is a new thing to me.

Appears the Hopper 3 is still in Beta test mode.

Well, if it's any consolation, with the expected release of DISH's new Hybrid switch (DPH42) in January, it appears we may be able to run two Hopper 3s from one dish:

I am not sure twice as many tuners with the wrong guide info is a consolation <_< . After looking around the interwebs for a while, I tried something else. It appears that putting the Hopper and Joey in standby mode, it will update overnight. I changed my power settings to disable the inactivity timeout. I changed it before I turned in last night. This morning, the guides are updated. The reason it didn't update the first night might have had something to do with the activity timeout settings.

While it's not necessary to update the guide every time the receiver is started, it sure would be nice if there was an option to force an update when necessary. I would think the Hopper is smart enough to know when the guide date is out of date, like when new channels appear and old ones disappear! The old receivers did. Maybe that's the 'bug' part.

Thanks for all your comments.

When we change locals we get the guide to update by turning off the Hopper 3 for 20-30 minutes after the locals have been sent to the receiver. Usually this will start the download. Sometimes we have had to power it off and on 3 or 4 times to get it to work but we've always gotten the guide to download.

It's important once the download starts to let it finish before trying to watch TV. You can watch the download progress on the screen. We record a lot of shows and really want the PTAT to work and not have to wait until the next day.

Hope this works for you.
