Tucson to Monument Valley in April

Not A Clue

Recommended Posts

we are looking to leave Tucson in April and head to Monument Valley. We have been through Flagstaff and Page and are looking for different route. we are thinking about hwy 77 to 191 to 160 to 163.

Two questions:

How are the roads and anywhere to camp overnight. I am not seeing much in the way of campgrounds, prefer hookups....at least electric.

TIA

It has been a couple of years, but they were all good 2 lane roads. AZ-77/US-60 from Globe to Show Low goes through the Salt River Canyon and does have some steep grades up and down. There are campgrounds in Show Low, Holbrook, Canyon De Chelly National Monument (no hookups) and Monument Valley. If you take US-191 to US-163 instead of taking US-160, there are campgrounds in Mexican Hat and Bluff.

Venture In RV in Show Low would be a good stopping point but they don't open until May 1. Since you're leaving Tucson in April you might want to kill some time by staying at Lost Dutchman State Park, Apache Junction, AZ. It's a beauty and lots to do in the area including taking a drive on the Apache Trail, Boyce Arboretum. a boat tour on Canyon Lake and more. You might also try Juniper Ridge in Show Low. Perhaps they open earlier in April. Even though these parks are membership parks they accept non-members. They are both good parks.

The Salt River Canyon section is a good downhill and uphill but it's very doable with your RV. It's a popular RV route in summer and a beautiful drive.
