LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Georgia's Environmental Protection Division is investigating after a witness spotted a Democratic National Committee tour bus apparently dumping human waste into a storm drain.

Lawrenceville police are also investigating the claim which surfaced on Tuesday, a photo shown to us by a CBS46 viewer showed a Democratic National Committee tour bus apparently making the dump between campaign stops.

CBS46 viewer Mike Robins, manager of a nearby business, took several photos of the tour bus dumping waste into the storm drain. In the pictures, a liquid can be seen coming from the bottom of the bus.

According to Robins, a hazardous materials crew responded to the location and collected the waste to keep more of it from entering the storm drain.

"I don't care who you are. I don't care if you're Hillary Clinton. I don't care if you're Donald Trump. I don't care who you are, you don't throw human waste down a storm drain," said Robins. "Wastewater just dumping all out in the street, poured out in the storm drain, and at this time I've got my cell phone out and I'm taking pictures because I don't care who you are. That's just wrong."

The incident happened on Grayson Highway Tuesday morning after the bus left a campaign stop near the Gwinnett County Board of Elections Office where hundreds of voters were lined up to take part in early voting.

Police say when officers arrived on the scene, toilet paper was scattered on the roadway near the storm drain, and there was a foul smell.

CBS46 reached out to the DNC, which issued the following statement:

This was an honest mistake and we apologize to the Lawrenceville community for any harm we may have caused. We were unaware of any possible violations and have already taken corrective action with the charter bus company to prevent this from happening again. Furthermore, the DNC will work with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, as well as local and state officials to determine the best course of corrective action.

The GA Environmental Protection Division said their investigator responded to the scene Wednesday morning, and said they're speaking with representatives from the charter company.

They'll then determine what penalties will be handed down, most likely to the charter company.

That "storm drain" problem is going to cause a lot of problems. No idea of who was actually responsible for the dumping but it is incredibly bad publicity for all involved.

I skipped posting this due to the political implications.

I simply can't imagine doing this because, well..... let me ask a question. Have you ever been around a septic system when they open it to pump it out? No? Good for you because you really don't want to be there. I suspect I would not have wanted to be there either.

This smells to me like nothing but a straight forward political posting.

Note that this incident concerned a chartered bus with a charter company employee operating it. Place the blame where it belongs...

It really doesn't matter whether RV, chartered bus, commercial bus, honey wagon, etc. The thought that someone, anyone, would even think to dump raw sewage on a city street is simply appalling.

As we all know there are all kinds of people out there. Where I volunteer a lot we had someone bring human poop in some kind of bucket and wrapped in a plastic bag and place it in the "bear proof" trash cans. They could have easily just dumped it down the toilet. I was the "lucky" one that found the bags of urine in plastic baggys one day when I opened the back of one to pull the trash. They always sealed stuff up real good so none of us got splashed. I found one of the poop ones once that was wrapped so neatly that you might have thought it was a present if it had a ribbon on it. It was always random and at a distant site so it took more than a year to catch them. It never happened in the winter. I don't know the total end of the story but supposedly it was some highly intelligent person that was just a little off plumb. OK maybe a lot off plumb.

As far as the bus my vote is the driver was just trying to short cut going to a dump station and maybe avoiding a dump fee.

I agree, I just didn't want to see this thread go off the rails because of who the passengers happened to be.

No legitimate excuse, but dump stations are hard to find outside of RV parks. I live in San Diego, CA and there is only one dump station in the whole county, which is on the far west end, that is not in an RV park. And many parks allow dumping only for their space renters.

This site might help you and others as you travel to find dump stations. Also, the rest area on I-5 just north of Oceanside has now closed their dump stations along with some other rest area ones.

If the EPA (state or federal) got involved in the cleanup operations, you can bet your boots there is a substantial fine involved, PLUS, the bus owner must pay the entire cost of the cleanup/remediation operation, which itself is very expensive.

To be clear from the get go... I do NOT condone the practice. However.. there are many that don't see it as an issue. I know it's very common among covert campers.. citing that it is no different than disposing diapers or cat litter in a bin. Then again.. to me.. it's pretty off-putting when folks are living full-time on the road and using a 5 gallon bucket for all of their "business" to begin with.

The bus issue.. I'll remain skeptical if it was actually an "honest mistake". Looks like they were "aiming" for the storm drain. An electrical dump valve could theoretically develop an issue, or hit a road obstacle and damage the tank, but from the photo there doesn't appear to be a dump "streak" while moving down the road and too convenient to happen to be stopped dead on a storm drain. I hope they get hit HARD with fines or they'll just chalk it up to the cost of doing business.

Just general information if it's unfamiliar to some.. "covert campers" are folks living out of a non-converted standard van.. or more typically.. a cargo trailer with the intent to disguise the fact that it is being lived in... allowing them to park on any city street or parking lot without the same restrictions that might be imposed on an RV.

The driver had a choice the bus was just overloaded with crap, he could dump the liquid waste or the human waste . He was reaching for the ejection seats and pulled the wrong handle. :D

Note :Not political there would have been just as much stinky stuff if it had been a bus from the Trump team.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that buses have a gray water tank ?????
