Jimalberta
Hi, has anyone boondocked in the Yuma area and can you tell me where to go. The Imperial Dam Has an area I think but can you tell me anything about it. Is there actually boondocking there? Are there dumps stations and water nearby? Any other areas where you can ride ATvs from? Thanks. Jim <p>....JIM and LINDA......2001 American Eagle 40 '.towing a GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 with RZR in the rear. 1999 JEEP Cherokee that we tow as well. horizon36
the Imperial Dam LTVA is a great place to dry camp. It will cost you $40/two weeks and they have a dump station, water and trash. Emergencies are handled by the military base nearby as they monitor a specific CB channel for that purpose. You can also go thru the museum at the proving grounds for free. If you buy Schwans products their truck goes out there every Friday. vermilye
I stayed at Imperial Dam for 2 weeks last February. It consists of 3500 acres; you can be as close to neighbors as you want or 1000's of feet from the nearest. It is more developed than most boondocking locations in that there is a fresh water filling station, a 4 bay dump station & dumpsters. There is even an old airstream converted to a library where you can exchange books. There are bathrooms with outdoor showers near the registration trailer. There are other dry camping areas besides the main one at Imperial Dam. My journal has some photos starting on the first day of my stay. Pambe83
We've not been to the Imperial Dam area but we met new friends in Quartzsite last week who couldn't say enough great things about the area. We won't be down there this year, but it's now on the "to do" list. God never promised us a quiet journey, only a safe arrival. dzwiss
Imperial Dam LTVA is the best. Lots of activities and things to do. Great hiking, biking and kayaking. Aerobics followed by yoga three days a week. Group hike each Thursday. Dog burn on the full moon. Christian Center nearby where they have church services, filtered water, propane and a post office which accepts mail, UPS and FedX. There is also a jam session each Sunday afternoon. 2019 Airstream Flying Cloud 27FB 2011 Ford F350 CC SRW "Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for." bobsallyh
Also there is a free 14 day BLM area behind the VFW on Rt. 95 (west side)just north of Yuma. Free. No dump or water, so a trip into town would be necessary if you can't make the 14 days. Along South Frontage Rd. going east from Foothills Blvd. there is boondock area looking at the mountains and quite a few folks use that area. Again, no facilities. Jimalberta
Thanks everyone. Imperial Dam sounds nce except for the dog burnng...not into that. We are looking at Ogilby as there is riding there it looks like. <p>....JIM and LINDA......2001 American Eagle 40 '.towing a GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 with RZR in the rear. 1999 JEEP Cherokee that we tow as well. wa_desert_rat
There is Mittry Lake which is a 10-day-free BLM camping area: http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/recreation/watchable/mittry.html. RVs are limited to 10 days in a calendar year but reports indicate that this is not actively enforced. Although flagrant violation and any sign of a "semi-permanent" camp would probably attract attention. But it makes an attrractive break from all-desert boondocking. Look on Google Earth west of Yuma (just across the Colorado River) and you'll see a lot of boondocking RVs. Plus there is the SKP Park at Yuma. Find a spot, settle in, and then mooch around in the toad (or truck) to see where the ATV action is. There is a superb set of sand dunes between Yuma and El Centro along the Interstate. The best sand dunes I've ever been on, in fact (although I haven't sampled all of them). We are looking at Ogilby as there is riding there it looks like. ATVing and Jeeping is very popular there. They do group rides weekly. The dog burns are not quite as bad as they sound. shaman52
We spent two winters at Coyote Ridge area of the Imperial Dam LTVA, it was great. You can use the Inside Showers at the lake facilities, East of Hurricane Ridge area , just bring your bags of quarters. The wild burros are fun to watch. Do not feed them, for several reasons. Prospectors use drywashers and shovels to do Gold prospecting in the Potholes area, South of Coyote ridge.. You can ATV there with your dry washer, pails and shovels and find some gold. You will need to pay a nominal fee and join the club that holds the claims, just ask one of the miners there on weekends.. There are miles and miles of ATV and hiking trails. The nearby Yuma Proving grounds is open to the public, just need you drivers licenses. You can eat at their facilitoes, bowl and see the free movies at the Bowling alley, special area in the bowling alley. There is a Thanksgiving pot luck event at the gravel pit (LTVA), Turkey is provided via last years raffle tickets and attendees provide the side dishes. Very friendly group of people. Like said before the Christain Service Center can function as you address, just register with them. It is free service, I made a small donation to their church at the end of each season. You can fill your RV or small propane tanks there at prices higher than you can get in Yuma. You can obtain low cost, high quality dental care and eye glasses at the border town of Los Algones. My wife was a dental assistant for many years and she was impressed by the work there. Dental implants are about 1/3 rd the cost in the US. Hair cuts are very low in price and I got excellant no rush hair cuts there. The ladies will like the pedacures and other beauty sevices there. Bring your passport. I thought it was very safe there. Here is a paste from their web site: " The friendly community of Los Algodones is located in Baja California, Mexico at the California – Arizona border. It is seven miles west of the city of Yuma, AZ. Traveling on I-8 take Calif. 186 south on Algodones Road, past the Quechan Casino & Resort to Andrade, which is on the USA side of the border. Access to the community is very easy. You may park on the USA side and walk less then 1 block or park in one of the attended parking lots in the town. Most businesses are located less then 4 blocks from the border and the currency of choice is the American dollar. Los Algodones offers a wide variety of curio shops, pharmacies, open air cafes, medical doctors, health professionals, optical dispensaries and a large number of dentists providing quality services and specialized treatments at a cost savings that makes your trip worth while. Los Algodones businesses appreciate the support of the visitors and hold several events and activities for all to enjoy. Do not worry if your Spanish is not up to par as most of the businesses have employees that are fluent in English. " We had a blast boondocking there and plan on returning soon. Good luck! FULLTIMEWANABE
X2 on Los Algodones for dental. Been using Clarissa Salazar down there and her father before he retired. Wonderful experience, and paid about 10% what we get quoted in Canada! Have you checked out Roadslesstravelled website/blog Jim? Emily Fagan and hubby, they do a lot of boon docking in some wonderful areas as a heads up and IIRC think they've done Imperial Dam. She takes wonderful photos and does great write ups. Imperial Dam LTVA is on our radar - look forward to reading your experience. Helen. PS: Jim as a heads up weatherman says your home town due to hit in the upper 20's next week!!! Unheard of this time of year eh?
Jimalberta
Ok we are at Ogilby road...nice and quiet here with lots of old mine shafts, trails, old cabins and of course the Dunes. Yesterday we took a drive up to Glamis, Salton Sea and checked out Slab City.....oh my! Only problem with both Ogilby and Imperial is they are in california with its plethora of ridiculous rules. Gonna stick to Arizona. Today we took a drive to Imperial Dam LTVA area.....no thanks. Way too many people. I think when we leave Ogilby Rd area we will go to Quartzsite..... more room to spread out a bit and better riding. A nice RC strip, easy access to town on the RZR. We like Q. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. <p>....JIM and LINDA......2001 American Eagle 40 '.towing a GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 with RZR in the rear. 1999 JEEP Cherokee that we tow as well. Way too many people"....Just curious, Imperial Dam LTVA has 3500 acres (5.5 sq miles), could there possibly be 1 RV per acre ? Surely there was some space out there that would allow you to be far removed from the folks that like to pack in like sardines..... Did you go way out to the northwest portion ? Jimalberta
I drove around the entire area ..... Way too many people packed together. I drove nw as far as the wash .....cant get a 40 ft motorhome through that wash. That area is empty but the wash requires a light trailer and a 4x4 truck. We like to be off by ourselves a bit as we have no solar and run our little Honda in the evenings. Here at Ogilby you can see other people but they are at least 1/8 th to 1/4 mile away or more. First thing we thought at ID was...why would anyone want to stay here? Lol....thats just the way we are. <p>....JIM and LINDA......2001 American Eagle 40 '.towing a GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 with RZR in the rear. 1999 JEEP Cherokee that we tow as well. wa_desert_rat
Don't judge the areas by the weekend campers or during holidays (MLK's birthday was on the 19th, just six days before you saw ID) and lots of ATVers hit the deserts from the SoCal area if they can squeeze a ten day vacation in with only 4 days of vacation-time. Yuma is an easy drive from SD.
