Just saw the new T-Mobile marketing campaign - the "T-Mobile One" plan. On the surface, it sounds like a absolutely killer plan. $70 flat rate (taxes and all other charges included) for one line, unlimited text/voice/data, coverage in Canada & Mexico (and Europe!) at no additional cost, 1 hour of free GoGo WiFi when you fly on planes so equipped, cellular over WiFi, so-called binge-on where a good number of the streaming video and audio services are independent of the data plan (which is good because they state that "During congestion top 3% of users (>28GB/mo.) may notice reduced speeds"

In fact, the per-line rate drops to $40/line for 4 lines or $60/line for 2 lines. Not bad - that is about 1/2 what our current Verizon plan is charging our family of 4.

So, what's the catch? Well, coverage of course! So here is where I am reaching out to the community to open up a discussion.

We are fulltimers but also are still working fulltime until we retire this December. Thus, it is tough for us to get a sense of where the holes in T-Mobile's coverage are (sure you can look at the coverage map but that thing is always notional)

We are in Huntsville, AL and for where we are, the T-Mobile coverage is 5 bars (I have rented a T-Mobile hot spot to check this out and the service is very very good *in* Huntsville. When you look at the coverage map for AL however, you can see some pretty significant no-service areas.

Also, when we retire in Dec, we will head for Florida - again it seems FL has really good coverage as well.

The problem will be in March 2018 when we head north to join our caravan on the Alaskan Highway. When you get up to the SD/MT/ND areas, there are currently BIG no-service areas -- although if you want to believe T-Mobile, they are saying that by the end of 2017 they will greatly expand their network and currently they are at 99% of Verizon's coverage.

When we lived in Germany, T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) was the best service out there - so now I am looking for opinions and hopefully actual usage reports on how T-Mobile stacks up to the competition (AKA Verizon).

Boy are you opening a can of worms!

Here is my take. We have had T-Mobile for well, since before it was T-Mobile and have been very satisfied. When we initially started we did not travel much so coverage was a rather moot point. T-Mobile has improved its coverage immensely over the years. Take a look at their coverage map. From our travels the coverage map is pretty accurate. You may not have data every where, but then you don't with other providers either. The only place we have found we do not have phone calls are in places where there is simply no coverage for anyone.

The Mexico/Canada thing is real. When we last crossed in to Mexico, friends with ATT and Verizon were reminding themselves to turn off their phones or put in airplane mode so they would not get hit with charges. Our phones simply flashed up a "Welcome to Mexico" message and seamlessly switched over to the Mexican network.

We used our phones when we visited Scotland and Ireland. No problem at all with text and data. That was all free. Calls were 10 cents/minute but if we had to make a call, we used Skype (data).

The thing that has kept us with T-Mobile over the years are exactly the reason you are looking at it, price. I would also add that over the years we have never had a bad customer service experience.

I am sure you will hear from others reasons not to have the service but you have heard my take.

You can get the Canada/ Mexico coverage now with Cricket . They are now owned by AT&T . So you also get the benefit of a much larger AT&T network while traveling in the USA. The price at Cricket is comparable if not cheaper than Tmobile also.

I have a friend with T-Mobile. Basically his phone does not work outside the interstate system and urban areas. When I teased him about getting a different carrier his reply was...."Why, I can always use your phone".

We did sign up for Verizon's data and voice plan in Canada this past summer and it worked really well. It was a life saver. Not sure about T-Mobile in Canada, but I would like to hear comments.

It has been a few years, but when I asked a T-Mobile representative about a phone and told him where I was traveling HE suggested Verizon.

I did think about splitting the two phones between different carriers.

The one thing to make sure with T-mobile is your phone supports band 12 which is very much their rural coverage. This is where the majority of their expansion has been over the past year and without that you are limited a lot more to interstate and urban areas. I used to have T-mobile for years, but switched to Sprint back when it actually had a larger foot print then Tmobile, but now they have drastically expanded past what Sprint has. I have Google Fi phone which switches between Sprint, Tmobile & US Cellular. I noticed this weekend while visting a state park near our home, my Tmobile phone had coverage on band 12, but my Verizon mifi didn't. I wasn't even sure my Fi phone picked up band 12, but I was glad to see it was working!

IMO, Verizon still provides the highest opportunity for both voice/data coverage across the nation. (The gap with say ATT, which we have the DW on, I'm on Verizon, as dropped tremendously over the last 5-10 years.) For where we've traveled, 95% + West of the Mississippi, Verizon has had the best coverage. (We use my Samsung S6 with Unlimited Data as our Hotspot.) Again, that being said, we've had a few times in last years 8 months of traveling, I think it was 3 times, where the ATT had coverage where Verizon did not. We don't even count the number of times that ATT had no coverage, and Verizon did - but as stated, that number is dropping yearly.)

For short term travel thru Canada, we have the Millienicom T-Mobile hosted Hotspot data plan. (We use Skype when needing to make calls.) We spent just under two months in Alberta and British Columbia this year, and this worked well for us. (We also did activate the ATT Canadian account to allow the wife to Text via her iPhone on ATT too. But could have got by with out that.)

On our 2014 trip to Alaska, we stopped in Cardston, AB and added a then Telus Sim Card supported account, with 20GB of data. And it worked well for us along the Alcan and up into Alaska, where I swapped back out the Sim card for Verizon. (In 2013 when I was researching, Telus had the best overall coverage along the Alcan. That sure may have changed by now. And to be clear, still many areas without coverage along the Alcan and in Alaska. So also keep a WiFi assist setup in mind for you travels too. (We like the WiFiRanger products. But others work well too.).

Unless you plan many exclusions into Canada, I would focus on the lower 48 coverage support. Then augment for the times you head North.

Best of luck to you, and travel safe, have fun,

Smitty

Thanks everyone for reasoned commentary on what plans work best for you!

Currently we are in the Catbird seat in that our contracts have expired with Verizon, and we opted to go to the Apple store and get the annual upgrade options for our iPhone 7s's so we can switch carriers whenever we want ;)

Since everything "just works" for us now I am thinking a wait and see attitude may be the best course of action. After all we do not retire and go fully mobile until December and who knows what infrastructure will be in place by then!?

Chalkie, you make a VERY persuasive argument for T-Mobile and I may wind up exploring that option anyway - like I said in my original post we are pretty much tethered to Huntsville, AL for the next 11 months and T-Mobile is solid 4G LTE all around the area.

Here is a question for those who use the T-Mobile Binge-on feature (and are on iPhones or other devices with an air play capability): Can you airplay your videos on your iPhone to your Apple TV hooked up to your main TV? This would be a awesome feature if you can!

Been using Cricket with AT&T as there carrier now for close to two years! Very satisfied with their coverage so far! I get unlimited texts and phone calls in the US. I get 10 GB HS data for $60.00, $10.00 for the HotSpot per month of service. Total $70.00.

The current Verizon plan has Canada and Mexico included if you are on the XL plan or higher. This plan came out in July, so many are not on it. My wife and I have called both Canada and Mexico since changing to the new plan, but have not gone into either country since the change.

I have been using a T-Mobile smartphone since July along the West Coast and have found it does not work for me. There have been a few places where T-Mobile had service that my Verizon phone does not, but not many. (T-Mobile is more reliable around the Escapee Co--op in Chimacum WA than Verizon, where I had a need to be available 24/7). There have been many more places, especially along US101, where T-Mobile has not had service and Verizon has had service. Plus, I also have encountered places with 4GLTE that is slow, slow, slow, which seems to be from overloaded towers. At the campground in the Hesperia/Victorville CA area that we stay, T-Mobile had very high speeds, but 4 miles away at my sister-in-laws place, it was slow and flaky. In both places we had 4GLTE. There is a MetroPCS store three blocks from the sister-in-laws house, which might account for some of the load on the tower. I also encountered very slow T-Mobile 4GLTE in many places along the California coast, while Verizon was solid.

Right now I am burning up the carry over data on my T-Mobile phone using it as a wifi hotspot. I had the 6GB per month plan and would end up with about 3GB of carry over each month, while using 10 to 15GB with Binge On (video streaming at 480p, DVD qualiity). I no longer need to be available 24/7 and have not made or received a call on the T-Mobile phone in the last 3 months.

My experience with AT&T, since we had a Mifi and now have a tablet, is their coverage works for fulltimers about as well as Verizon. We have fulltimer friends who have been on AT&T for years and wonder why others think it has worse coverage than Verizon, since that is not their experience.

Edit: You can't cast or airplay Binge On. The new T-Mobile plan is now unlimited, with many caveats, and Binge On no longer matters.

T-Mobile has some great plans, for sure.. and some great benefits. But they are still solidly in third place for coverage behind Verizon and AT&T. We consider them a great *compliment* to an RVer's setup, but not as a primary source of connectivity.

I've embedded a coverage map showing their coverage as compared to Verizon (Purple = T-Mobile, Red = Verizon) taken from our app Coverage?:

T-Mobile has promised to close the gap later this year, and they are the most rapidly expanding carrier right now (so they just might).

There's a bunch of other caveats about their plans too (such as mobile hotspot use has some limitations). You can learn more about our take on their plans, and the plans of the other carriers and how they relate to RVers looking for home internet replacements: The Four Carriers - Which Are Best for RVers?

The T-Mobile plan we recommend RVers consider picking up right now is their Simple Choice Postpaid $35/month 6GB data plan, which includes Binge On video streaming, international and Data Stash. It's a pretty killer plan, in our opinion. They're retiring the plan on Jan 22 - but will continue to grandfather it in. Worth considering, and available for their mobile hotspot or T-Mobile compatible tablets.

Using streaming devices (like AppleTV, Chromecast, etc.) are not officially supported by Binge-On (only a consideration for their older Simple Choice plans, not their one One/One+ plans) - but it's been 'hit or miss' lately as to if the data is counted or not. We used AppleTV the other evening with Binge On with success.

Lived in Wyoming and worked in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana until about a year ago. Verizon had the best coverage in all those states though there were areas with no coverage at all. Next was AT&T. Sometimes could not get a signal even with a booster where Verizon I could get three bars with out the booster. T-Mobile was non existent. Most communities would not even offer Sprint or T-Mobile because of the lack of coverage. Verizon unfortunately is still the leader in coverage.

See you on the road!

So if we get the older Simple Choice Mobile plan say on a tablet, we would not be able to use it as a hot spot and stream programs on the TV on Netflix or Amazon and have it count towards Binge On?

I'll check out the TV article but everything I've read so far is not very clear and neither was the clerk in the T-mobile store.

I found my answer at Technomadia's website. Guess I should have read it first (lol). I have ordered what I think I need to accomplish what I want to do although I could not find anything that specifically said it would work with the tablet we have. We'll find out tomorrow.

Is this the same plan as what is offered by Millenicom? Could it be used on a Galaxy Note 4 (understanding there is no voice - except maybe data calls - skype/hangouts...)

Is it possible to get Millenicom (6gb data) use on a ZTE Z-917 Mobile Hotspot and be able to use Binge-on through apps through a Galaxy Note 12 tablet and cast through a HDMI cable?

I went to my local T-Mobile store last night and grabbed one of these Simple Choice 6gb plans before they disappear. I was armed with the plan name (SC NAMERICA MI 6GB) and was ready to "educate" the CSR, but amazingly she knew exactly what I was talking about. They actually have a promotion right now where you can get the Acatel Linkzone for free (well you get a credit each month over 24months) She didn't know the Alcatel Linkzone was on promotion, but that was easy enough to figure out. The CSR was awesome and made the experience about as painless as it could be.

I was there 15mins top and got all setup. My OTD price was $27.00. This included $21.40 for the sim plus $5.60 tax on the device that they credit at $79.99. If you keep your service for 24 months, your device is free. If you cancel any time before that, you owe the balance on the device. They credit about $3.34 each month towards the device.

I didn't get a chance to try it out last night, but what I've been reading more people are having luck with the binge on working for apps like Netflix and Hulu using a Roku or Chromecast device vs on a tablet/phone. It's not guarenteed, but it semes to be working. It may not work for all apps binge on supports, but I think the ones that work will suit me.

Picked up one of these plans last night (1/19) - A couples of days left. 1/22 according to Cherie Post #10 above

My experience was the about the same as BlueLghtning. Only differences were it took a bit longer than 15 minutes (like 25) because they had to call in the activation, however they waved the activation fee for me so cost out the door was just under $6.

Got the $35 6GB Simple Choice post paid plan

Alcatel Linkzone Hospot which is on special Free if you keep plan for 2 years (normally $80)

If you quit the plan early the balance for this device will need to be paid off (~$3 credit/month)

Monthly cost will be just under $40 ($35 for plan and a few bucks taxes and fees)

Did a test on Binge-on last night - Netflix through Roku

Binge-on states that it works with streams less than 480p

Netflix quality set to low .3 GB/hr and Roku set to low bandwidth .3Mbps

In Austin, TX

Binge-on worked while watching 2 hours of Netflix show - No 4G LTE data used

Next important test will be when baseball season starts!

Nice so they waived the $20 Sim card activation fee for you? I didn't even think about asking that.

Yes, nice - I didn't even ask, the CSR graciously offered because it took a little while (a few minutes) to call in and do the activation. It wasn't long for me but I did accept the gracious offer.

Could be they gave it because we have had a prepaid phone with them for 12 years, but they didn't say.

But other than that my experience was exactly the same as yours - knowledgeable and courteous customer service.

They didn't fully understand the intricacies of Binge-on but then again it seems that no one (web searching) fully understands how to make it work on various devices and services.

My Story...

So I open up this forum and see this reminder about the T-Mobile hot spot going away on Jan 22. So I jump in the car and roar down to the local T-Mobile store.

Nope, they know nothing about a 6g, unlimited streaming Hot Spot for $35. "I must be mistaken"

I whip out my smart phone and log into my Technomadia account and show them the article. "Oh, let me check again...." "Well. I'll be! Here it is..."

Ten minutes later I'm out the door with an Alcatel "Link Zone" hot Spot all hooked up for $35 a month + $3 a month for the hot spot (buy it outright for $72) + some taxes

They also hit me with a $20 one time set up fee

They did some research and they said they could find nowhere that this program is being discontinued on the 22nd. They did say a few voice plans were going away on the 22nd.

To be safe, I'd run right out and grab a hotspot before it might be too late.....

The CSR folks in that signed me up were aware that the plan 6G plan would be disappearing in the next few days. I did not confirm the exact date but in our conversation he said something like "yea that will be going away in the next couple of days."

More tests today with Youtube (360p setting) on laptop with wifi connection directly to the AlCa Hotspot - successful Binge-on used with no loss of $G LTE data.

Here is a question for those who use the T-Mobile Binge-on feature (and are on iPhones or other devices with an air play capability): Can you airplay your videos on your iPhone to your Apple TV hooked up to your main TV? This would be a awesome feature if you can!

Edit: You can't cast or airplay Binge On. The new T-Mobile plan is now unlimited, with many caveats, and Binge On no longer matters.

I do not have Apple TV so can not address that question directly. I am not sure exactly how Mr. Joyce is defining "cast" but I assuming it means to play from your phone to a TV.

I have done this using Binge On with Netflix to an Amazon Fire Stick. The Stick has a mirror function that works with my S7. However, it only works with Android devices running 4.2 or higher. I don't think the image quality would be very good on my 55" TV, but a 20" TV the image was DVD quality and very watchable.

I am thinking that if the Android combo works, there should not be a reason that the Apple combo would not work as well.

My 2 cents.
