USPS General Delivery

SWharton

Recommended Posts

Since September I have had packages sent to a local PO, General Delivery. They were from UPS and Fedex, no problems. I am now in Deming,NM. Went to pick up a pkg. and they said unless the package had a USPS tracking number it could not be accepted. However, UPS thinks they delivered the package. PO said pkgs. from Fedex and UPS are sent back if they are dropped off. I am now tryinbg to find my package.................

I really don't understand how you can tell what PO accepts what. Does anyone know without calling the PO each time?

Rant!!!!

No you need to call each PO and ask. Each Postmaster reads and interprets the regs in their own way. Your only recourse is to contact the sender to see if they get it back.

Also be aware that some companies use a program that auto sends UPS etc to a post office no matter what you put on the pkg. So be careful to check for that when ordering.

There's a service called UPS Mail Innovations in which the UPS and USPS partner in deliver. UPS handles the first part of the shipping and then hands the package off to the US Post Office for local delivery. A package sent this way and addressed to General Delivery will be fine because it's placed into the USPS system by UPS. I'm thinking that's what you've encountered.

Budd: Everyone knows that in a major city only one PO will accept GD. Deming only has 1 PO..

Thanks Ron and Linda.

I looked the pkg up on UPS and the package was picked up today from the PO. I went on live chat with UPS. Very nice service. Lady sent a note to whoever saying I did not reject the pkg. Also found out that Amazon has a restriction on their pkgs so I can't have it delivered any place else. We have located the pkg. on the truck and the UPS Deming Service Center will call me if they can retrieve it.

While I was typing this note the Service Center called and had my package. I just picked it up. UPS rocks.........................UPS said next time just have the package held at the service center, not sure how to do that but will learn how.

X2. Nailed it. It's generally not a problem, but it's always wise to always check. Not too long ago I even found a PO that wouldn't accept general deliveries. You had to use the street address of the local church down the road (with their permission) and pick up your mail there. :o

From Escapees Mail service FAQ

Are other personal services available?
Yes, we will read a letter over the phone, check for a specific piece of mail, or look up a general delivery zip code.

Are there extra charges for personal services?
We do not charge extra for special services.

This has nothing to do with the Escapees Mail Service. This is the United States Postal Service...............................

Sure it does. We're on the Escapees forum and many Escapees use the Escapees mailing service. We're talking about getting General Delivery information. So, now we see that Escapees who need General Delivery information can get it through the mailing service.

That's been true for a long time........................You can also call the USPS or go to USPS.com for the info.

This problem is not General Delivery, it is that the PO will not accept General Delivery from UPS or Fedex while others do.

But it might be accepted, if, for instance, the shipper uses UPS Innovations or Fedex Smartpost. I've messaged sellers on Amazon to find out how they ship and they often answer back and ask me how I want it shipped, often for the same shipping cost.

I just want consistency between the POs. That is the cause of the problem. Each PO decides how they want to interpret the regulations, should be spelled out so there is no individual interpretation or it should be noted on the USPS site what they accept or don't accept.

Most campgrounds accept pkgs. so I don't use the General Delivery option often. We have a new rig so need to do a lot of random ordering, we also have been staying at Escapee campgrounds and they do not accept packages. Hence, the need for General Delivery.

I find most of my stuff is shipped by Amazon and I don't think I have a choice how it is shipped. We are heading into winter stop for 3 months so we won't have any more problems.

.........................UPS said next time just have the package held at the service center, not sure how to do that but will learn how.

I have done this many times over the years. Before I retired I used to have parts shipped to my location in that way most of the time. In such case you need the shipper to mark the shipping label "Hold For Pick Up" and the package is marked with the UPS station as the delivery point. They also have a place to insert a phone number for the agent to call and notify the customer that the package has arrived. I last used that service in Yuma back in March.

Good luck on getting that done! Between the poor management of the USPS and the tinkering in it by politicians, they have an impossible task to ever make that happen.

Being aware that in Quartszite any pkg sent via UPS Innovations to General Delivery will not be accepted. Last time we were there (2 years ago) we had an address for a fellow Escapee who owns property with mail delivery. They were kind enough to allow us to use it.

FYI, be advised that even when you call the destination PO to confirm their GD address, you *might* get wrong info!

We were in Fairbanks six weeks ago, had SKP ship our mail to their (so-called) GD destination (no street address, just c/o General Delivery 99701) -- which was the zip code the nice phone lady advised me to use (when I called before ordering our mail), AND that it was the downtown station (on Barnette St). Fast forward one week later, 09/25, a Friday, we are greeted with 6" snowstorm (by 10 am, and it was still coming down steadily)! I got to the downtown station, the pick-up window tells me their zip code is 99707 (not 99701), that all General Delivery should arrive there BUT my package was not there (despite sharing my delivery confirmation message)!@!

After hanging around and talking to two more clerks, the 3rd guy was a supervisor who shared with me their "confusion"; despite the differing zip codes, their internal protocol was supposed to send GD mail to the downtown station (NOT Mail Trail Rd, and NOT the College Station (whose zip code was 99701, and that's where they likely sent my Priority Mail package!). He called the super (Christina) at College Station (figuring they had it, since the zip code we used would send it there) -- I didn't wait for her confirmation, she might never have called (woulda just sent it over the next day,,, MAYBE); being a snowy Friday, I didn't wanna wait for Saturday (hoping things would work) -- weekend staff confusion vs. wait for Monday when we might wanna get on the road to get ahead of the next blast of winter! Good thing I persisted; by the time I got to College Station, they found our package and my 4-hour odyssey was over. Glad I did chase it down as the 1st snow cleared but another 12-15" was forecast for Monday afternoon -- so we got outta Dodge on Monday morning, then drove every day to stay ahead of the storms, until we got to Smithers and found nice, full-hookups & free firewood on the river (city park), three nights of respite (plus laundry & RV wash).

Seems like an effort by members, lifetime members and especially mail service subscribers would have a better chance of getting Escapees to change their policy then trying to get the Postal Service to change theirs. Accepting packages may also be an attractive service to the Xscapers who are still working and don't have the time or inclination to chase packages around during business hours.

TCW you are right. Escapees cgs are about the only ones that don't accept packages. Most cgs I give them a call and it is no problem. I wonder if there is some legal reason they can't accept packages?

It would be nice though if there was a consistent policy, not up to the discretion of each PO. It is bad enough that you need to look up each one to see what services they offer, what hours they are open, do they close for lunch or not etc..................

Escapees CGs are NOT the only ones that don't accept packages. Stayed at a large CG in Sisters, Ore. that refused any package requiring a signature. Couldn't get the shipper to waive sig requirement.
