Retirees-Latest on Space A Travel

Got this from the AF Personnel Center retiree newsletter today. Since they are advertising it so hard they must have a lot of seats!

Release No. 11-03-09
Nov. 18, 2009

Space-A travel an option for retirees

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AFRNS) – Retirees who dream of climbing an Egyptian pyramid, schussing down a black diamond ski slope in Bavaria, or walking on a Hawaiian beach can make these dreams come true with space-available travel.

Typically, these dreams require a lot of money; however, Space-A travel is free with the exception of customs or federal inspection fees on some chartered commercial air service missions.

Air Mobility Command aircraft fly all over the globe and often have open passenger seats available. An AMC aircraft takes off every 90 seconds. More than 130,000 Space-A travelers take advantage of this military benefit each year.

Retired Airmen with a retiree ID card and who are eligible to receive retired or retainer pay, fly as Category VI passengers. Since missions can be rerouted, delayed or cancelled for a variety of reasons -- weather, maintenance issues or higher priority missions – retirees need to be flexible. They need to plan for any potential delays and added expenses for stays, especially in high-cost areas.

There are four different methods for signing up for Space-A travel: in person at the passenger terminal or remotely via telephone, fax or e-mail. Sponsors must provide their name and information on all traveling dependents, and their desired destination(s).

Retirees can also use the DOD-chartered airlift missions for Space-A travel, if seats are available. Although retirees cannot visit their grandchildren in Iraq or Afghanistan, they can travel to Germany if the aircraft transitions there.

If traveling overseas, retirees should know the restrictions of the host country. For example, retirees traveling to Germany are not authorized to purchase items in the base exchange, but they can go off base and shop in the local community. Status of Forces Agreements restrictions, U.S. State Department Travel Advisory guidelines, the Foreign Clearance Guide and passport and visa requirements are all necessary items to research.

For more information on Space-A travel, visit the AMC travel Web site at:
http://www.amc.af.mil/amctravel/

New computer for son's college work... looking for advice

My step-son was talking to my wife the other day, and mentioned that he really needs a new computer for school.

And it's legitimate. He really does need the computer.

He's going to an art institute (second year of three) and doing very well. So as you might imagine, graphics and animations and such are what he's doing.

He's going to school as well as working fulltime and paying his own way so I can't fault him for any of that. But he is strapped for cash. (Most of us were at his age...)

His first email to his mom about what he could use was for a $499 HP 6210 desktop (he doesn't need the monitor), a very bare-bones kind of computer, at least in my opinion. And it may work for a while. But I was worried that we would be buying him the cheapest of the cheap in hopes that he'd be able to use it for a short time before finding out that he couldn't upgrade anything on it. I think he may be trying to keep the price as low as possible, and we do appreciate that. But we think he may be cutting himself too short in terms of what he may need in the future.

I looked at a more performance minded HP 9250 (I think) and also the Dell XPS 8000 line thinking those might be better machines, moving up to an Intel i5 or i7 processor and faster ram. But that also doubles the price. Hmmm.

It's been a long time since I bought a computer, and even longer since I bought a desktop. I started out with an HP, which was ok once I swapped out the original hard drive, and have pretty much been with Dell machines ever since. So I'm pretty confident there's a whole big bad world of computer hardware out there that I have no knowledge of.

Anybody have any little tidbits that they might throw my way that might be of help in finding step-son a new computer? Brands to stay away from? Brands to be sure and check out? Windows 7 versions? Processors? Memory? Hard drives? Video cards? Would be glad to read your thoughts if you'd care to share.

Oh, and yes, he DOES want to stick with a Windows platform.

Thanks for the thoughts,

Brian

MSE did not catch my Virus

Installed Microsoft Security last week. Yesterday I downloaded a short video from a Link I got in an E-Mail. The source was a Lou Dobbs rant on CNN. After watching I closed the video, closed the download screen, and got a bluescreen -- and an immediate reboot before I could read the message. Now the laptop continuously loads to the logon screen. If you login, it loads to the point the desktop icons are loaded and then crashes and reboots again. Does it with all three usernames. If you don't login it will crash and reboot within a minute. Seems to be some sort of timer in the Virus.

Thought it might be the 2 year old Gateway going, but had a Linux Live Boot CD so tried it. Laptop doesn't crash, but I don't know enough Linux to get to MSE and run a scan - if that can even be done.

Murphy at work: I just received my Clickfree backup device last week, but hadn't got "roun tuit" . Today I'll be removing the laptop HD and installing it in an external case to backup the data before I take it to a Geek somewhere to attempt recovery (I was able to photograph the screen and read the message from that but have no idea what the hex codes mean). Just lazy on my part as I have a recovery disk, but last time I used one it completely wiped my hard drive, which I have partitioned into 5 logical drives. The recovery disk ignores the logical partitions and FORMATS THE ENTIRE DISK. It's a real PITA to have to reinstall everything, and I'm just not ready to attempt Windows 7 (presume everyone has seen the Super Apple ad on TV with a Bill Gates look-alike saying "Trust me, it's different this time!". Having started with DOS 1.0, and used every MS OS, except Vista, since I've learned "Never before SP1".

This must be a new virus as I got a message that the downloaded video file was being scanned.

Over the past month I have tried to install AVG 9 a total of four times from geeks I think. It appears to download just fine but the install fails each time without much further explanation. To all my thinking it goes through all the steps automatically toward installing but then at the last says failed. Even auto backs up. Guess my best thing is to get another free anti virus but which one and how to put it on my machine without having a gap between removing AVG 8.5 and getting the new anti virus protecting my machine. I will not be back on computer until next week. I understand I should not have two anti virus programs at the same time.

Hi All,
Looking for some information.

Has anyone had any dental work done at "The Smile Shoppe" in Los Algodones - they are located at Alamo Alley, between A&B.

Last season, my husband lost a filling and we went there. We were real happy with the dentist and had an estimate done for future work - fillings, cleaning, crowns, and plate. We are hoping to get the work done this season but I just wondered if anyone else has experience with this dentail shop.

Also, there is a campground on the right, directly before the large parking lot at the border. I lost the name of it. Can anyone help?

Thanks so much,
Diane (and Andy too)

I respect and am in awe of the folks that were POWs in any war. Especially when they made it with their integrity intact. How likely is it that personal effects taken on capture make it back 40 plus years later? Or with the impact of this story for my fellow vets. It's really not a big story, anymore than any of ours is.

Go here and read it if you'd like, it's worth the time.
http://www.retirees.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123177565

I read a lot, and in person meet, vets that think there is some kind of pecking order. That retirees look down on two year service vets who were drafted in time of greatest need, and greatest danger, and served honorably. And served alongside of us. Some of my friends here on the forums have mentioned that they felt that their service in the guard or reserves was looked down on too.

I speak only for myself, and am loathe to try to put words in the mouth of another. But this story is pretty unigue, and my brothers in arms, regardless of where they served, or for how long, seem to be family. Thanks all for your service and hope you enjoyed that story.

Trojan / Virus recovery completed

A couple of weeks ago, I came here and was seeking help about my wife's computer. She had contracted a virus of some kind and was experiencing the "people with no clothes" popups as well as many advertising popups along with very slow performance and a general lack of responsiveness.

I tried running Malwarebyes, and that found and eliminated several trojans, including numerous repetitions of Vundo, a rather nasty little bugger that's not the easiest to recover from.

CCleaner was also used to clean up some of the pieces of leftover stuff that I didn't need anymore.

But it appeared that there was deeper damage done as numerous other programs were not working right. Network connections could not be changed, defrag would not run, and Windows updates would not install to name a few.

Many, including a nephew of mine who's into this stuff as a business, recommended wiping it clean and starting over, some with a fresh copy of Windows and some with other programs like Ubunto or a couple of others. And I could have done that. But decided to see whether I really could recover rather than just wipe it all out. In this case, the info stored on my wife's computer is mostly redundant and if it hadn't worked out and we had to wipe it clean, it wouldn't have been a big loss.

Derek (goes by RV here on the forum) got in touch with me and suggested some step by step, logical, and very thorough procedures for making the computer whole again.

I just finished up with the computer on Tuesday afternoon and it's back to normal, and better than it was before. It works pretty much like it did when it was new. And the good news is, it didn't delete any of her pictures or music or favorites lists or a lot of the other little stuff we like that we collect on our computers.

That said, I thought I'd run through just what was done, in case some of you may be interested.

The first stop was Reimage.com. It's a great service. Basically, you connect your computer to their computer (online) and they'll scan to see what needs to be fixed. If they find a corrupted or incomplete or missing Windows file, they'll extract a broken file and replace it with the file that should be there. It restores Windows without wiping out the stuff you don't want to lose. If you want, go to reimage.com and read about it for yourself. It's not that expensive, I think it was $59 for a single use, which should be enough.

Here is one place my attempts got hung up. I couldn't complete the reimage attempts online. It kept getting hung at about 80% or so of "installing new files". I tried several times but always got hung about the same place. Since it was the weekend, I didn't even try to contact Reimage directly but did send off an email to Derek just to see if he had any ideas.

Interestingly, he suggested that I reset IE8 to it's initial factory settings, which would turn off all of the addons that one accumulates with such things as "Yahoo toolbars", etc. I didn't quite realize at the time how interconnected IE8 and the Windows OS were at the time but figured I'd give that a try, just as Derek suggested.

It worked. Reimage completed it's tasks flawlessly. 3,634 Windows files replaced. (I'm not making that number up.) Oh, and by the way, Reimage did not even question my running the online service again since I hadn't comnpleted it the previous times. It was something I wondered about, whether it would be an issue. No problem.

But, the job wasn't done.

Next, and this was a biggie, was getting ALL of the Windows updates downloaded and installed. Whatever the viruses and trojans were on this computer, they wiped out some serious programing before they were eliminated. Before running reimage, I had been trying to download and install the updates and had gotten 55 of them installed. That's where it quit installing them and refused to go farther. After the reimage, it downloaded and installed an additional 67 critical Windows updates. Took a looooong time, but it finally installed them all.

Next came a full running of Malwarebytes. Since I had run that before, it didn't find anything, and that was good. If it had, I'd have kept working with that until there were no more issues.

Next came CCleaner. Same thing. There wasn't a lot there either since I had run it previously, but again, I'd have kept working with it until it was clean.

Next came a full AVG9 scan. Same thing. There were no issues, but I'd have kept working until there were none. (I do want to update the computer to MSE over the next couple of days, so I still do have that little task to complete. But since I already had AVG, I made sure that was updated and did the complete scan anyway.)

Still not done though.

Next was Secunia.com. Just when you thought all was well... LOL!! NOT!! Secunia will look through your programs and find security risks of programs you have on your computer that have been updated and patched and you don't have the updates and patches. Programs like Adobe, Java, Quicktime, that kind of thing. If you've got an older version and they've updated it, Secunia will be telling you about it. Numerous programs I updated with the latest patches. A few I deleted and replaced with a much more current version. And some, that were never used at all, were deleted completely.

Oh, and one more little thing that I never even talked to Derek about... I DESPISED seeing the "Provided by Yahoo!" tag after the "Windows Internet Explorer" at the top of every page. So I got rid of it! I went to Run - then typed in regedit - then did a "find" for those words. It took me to near the bottom of the listing where I clicked on (I think) the page title. When clicking on that, it gave me a text box where I could edit what prints at the very top of the window. I left the "Windows Internet Explorer" but deleted the "Provided by Yahoo!". I suppose I could have gotten rid of the "Windows Internet Explorer" if I'd have wanted to, or replaced it with something else. But what I did suited me. What can I say, it was just one of those little things that BUGGED me. LOL!

So, that's my story, at least the short version. Again, I owe a big "Thank you" to Derek. He spent at least an hour on the phone with me, educating me about how some stuff works, processes, updates, websites, cautions... lots of stuff. And he typed out a few of his thorough emails to me, too.

As great as it is to have gotten the computer fixed, I gotta tell you, the friendship and the learning experience were worth a lot more to me than the computer. I'm sure I have a bunch more to learn. But life is good. And I am thankful for good friends... some of which I've met right here on the forum.

Group hug... LOL!!

Brian

Just this morning, I got an email at my Hotmail account.

Looked to be "official" at first glance. Basically said I needed to verify my user name, password, and a few other pieces of personal info (I can't look, it was deleted and reported) so that my account wouldn't be shut down.

It didn't really look like this person, whoever they were, went to a whole lot of trouble to disguise themselves. And just a few looks at the address and where it came from made it obvious it was not really from Hotmail at all.

I know I didn't even consider filling out all of that personal info. But I have to wonder just how many people might have. Now that I think about it, if you're reading this, you probably wouldn't have.

Be safe out there.
Why have Outlook or Outlook Express

I am curious why anyone needs an external email program like Outlook Express...

In the past year or so I have seen several postings about people using EEPs ..(External Email Programs).. and my curiousity has finally got the best of me...

Would someone please tell me what Outlook, Outlook Express, or any other EEP can do, that my regular email companies cannot.. Maybe I'm missing something that could be useful.

Not putting it down folks .. just don't understand why people feel they need one...

I currently have email accounts with Juno, Google, Net Zero, AT&T and Yahoo ..... and in the past I have used AOL, Bell South, Netscape and a couple of others I can't remember off hand ...

Many years ago ..( late 80s or early 90s ? )..
MUltiple E-Mail Addresses in Outlook Express....

Well, I've got most things figured out and straightened up and have now converted all my services (internet, cable tv and phone) over to one provider, Knology, at the princely sum of $99 per month for 2 years, no contract and they will go up to only $135 at the end of the two years. Things looking good right now.

I had asked earlier about my current e-mail address and have now found from the tech folks at ATT that I may not have a problem in keeping my messages flowing from my old bellsouth.com address.

My question now is can I have my bellsouth.net, my knology.net and a gmail account all set up in Outlook Express and 'flip' back and forth to get my emails....I would set up sep folders to try and keep them more organized. I know there is a feature for 'Switching Identities' and would imagine that is what I would use.

Any helpful hints, references to use, etc would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks,

noisy computer and black screen

I have a Toshiba laptop that is about 4 years old. It is very noisy much of the time and seems at times to get noisier. Now every so often it just shows a black screen when I turn it on and seems to hang up there. By turning it off and restarting it again, it usually boots up. Is it time to start looking for a new computer? or is there a simple fix for this problem? I don't think the noise is the fan because it blows at different speeds. The battery is dead so I always run it plugged in. Thanks for your input--I can run a computer sort of, but I am not technical at all.

E-Mail Address...What Would You Do?

Well, AT&T, formerly had Bellsouth till the 'merge', hasn't come through for me. I have had them, first BellSouth and now AT&T, as my ISP since back in the mid/early 1990's and have had the same bellsouth.com e-mail address all that time, approaching 15 years. Have had the DSL in my house since 2001 when I took the fastest I could get....1.5Mb down. Since that time, they have come out with faster service, up to 6Mb down for residential, but even though I live right in town, nothing faster than 1.5 is available at my house....they have been promising for the last 2 or 3 years but have not come through and even my non-techno wife is complaining about the internet speed.

Anyway, I am thinking seriously of changing to cable through Knology. They are running a bundle with phone (unlimited long distance and local calls), digital (HD) cable with one DVR and 2 digital boxes and internet (8Mb down) for $99 per month for 24 months and by contract can only go to $135 at the end of the 24 months. Good Deal!!!! Oh yes, have to add $4/mo if you rent their cable modem and if I want to upgrade one of the extra digital boxes to a HD DVR it is another $13/mo.....Plus the regular taxes, fees, etc. Currently my AT&T plus my Comcast cable bills total right at $210/mo. Saving money plus going from a 1.5Mb internet to an 8Mb internet......Hmmmm, let me think this one our.

So, with that reasoning out of the way as to why I am looking into changing, here is my problem. I have had my current e-mail address for over 15 years and as you might imagine it is spread all over the internet. With a change in ISP's I would have to use a new e-mail address and AT&T has told me my bellsouth.net one would be discontinued 30 days after my service was terminated. I have a fairly large address book which I know I can bulk mail an address change to but there are many, many places such as forums, software companies, brokerage accounts, magazines, etc, etc, etc where my e-mail address is used for notices, renewals, billings, and such. These places typically do not have a place in my address book that could take such an e-mail and effect a change in e-mail address to a new ISP.

I'm sure some of you folks have experienced this situation and am asking for any solutions, workarounds, etc you may have come up with. AT&T/BellSouth used to allow you to keep your e-mail account for a small fee but they no longer allow it. (Maybe we need to lobby our politicos for transportability for e-mail addys like we can now get with our phone numbers). About the only thing I can think of is to maybe drop the DSL account down to the lowest price dial-up plan they have and just have the that e-mail pointed to the new cable internet account...keep it for a year or so and then drop it and figure if I haven't heard from somebody in a year, they must not be very important in my life.

I do plan on setting up a Gmail, Yahoo, etc account to use for those type of contacts in the future but those type of e-mail accounts were not even thought of when I started using my current bellsouth.com account. That way, I would always be able to access my e-mail from whatever ISP I had or was using.

Thanks for any and all thoughts....

Once we sell grandpa's mobile in Weslaco Texas, we were considering changing our domicle to SD. I am totally disabled and on Medicare and SSD but stupidly joined a Medicare advantage plan...the worst thing I ever could have done! Now unless I LOSE coverage I cannot just opt out. Since Livingston is covered under this plan, just changing to a SKP addy won't help me get this monkey off my back. AARP will only allow me to apply for the medicare supplement if I lose coverage, so my idea was to change domicles to SD where is particular plan is NOT covered. Now, back to my question. Paul gets all his medical care from a VA clinic in McAllen. Since there is a VA facility in Sioux Falls, would it be wise to change his main care "base" to SD? Paul is 90% sc disabled and has a IU claim in process. If that comes thru, I may then be eligible for CHAMPVA so would I be able to use SD also?

Grandpa is going into a retirement/assisted living/nursing care complex in Weslaco. We are once again going thru the what do I keep and what do I give away stage. My storagae is the garage at the mobile, so I gotta a lot of work to do, again!

dennnise

Tax time coming up- what to tax software use

Back in 2004 I ask the question on this forum - what tax software to use. The consensus was to use TurboTax. So, for the past 5 years I have done so. But, I had to up-grade my computer almost every year - Win 98 to Win 2000 to Win XP. Now with the new Win Vista and Win 7 will TurboTax stop supporting my latest up grade to XP? I cannot believe that you folks are upgrading every time Microsoft comes out with a new program and TurboTax stops supporting the old OS. Is there a tax program that still supports Window 2000 professional and/or Windows XP professional? I am tired of spending money for OS's that I don't need just to do my taxes. Please, some help here, again - what can I use?

A little background - I'm retired. I have some TIAA/CREF retirement + SSA and a very small amount of investment income. My largest deductions are medical and property taxes (so much so that I pay no income tax on my retirement income). But, I need to file those tax forms! Please advise - thanks.

PDA or Smart Phone?

Hi, my HP iPAQ PDA just gave up. Have replaced the internal battery, but it didn't help. Have used it a lot....

I don't find any kind of PDA's in any store anymore. I guess everybody is going with some kind of smart phone.
My problem is that I really don't want to pay more to get a smart phone. With Verizon it would cost $30.- in addition to our reg. phone bill if I were to use a Blackberry. It's impossible to buy a Blackberry and not use it as a phone. Isn't that crazy?
I don't need a camera or phone or even internet access is not as important.
Does anybody have any suggestion of what to buy?
Thank you in advance for any ideas you might have.

Setting up a new laptop for use - what to do?

Do any of you have a good checklist for preparing a new laptop for use?

I will be buying one in the next couple of weeks, and it has been a very, very long time since I have switched from an old computer to a new one. I want to make sure I have the new one all cleaned up/set up before I begin populating it with up-to-date new software and my files from my old computer.

I know I will want to take stuff OFF the new computer that I wish was not there (trial software). I vaguely remember something about making a backup disk of the OS. I want to download and install virus/spyware software (or maybe use any free trials that come with the computer).

It would be a big help to me if any of you have a (hopefully simple) checklist you use when setting up a new computer. Any advice?

Thanks,
Laurie

32 bit vs 64 bit - is it time for me to make the change?

My 4-year old Toshiba laptop is barely hanging in there (though I love it). When Windows 7 releases next week, I will be purchasing a new one. I would have already bought a laptop with Vista in the past month, but every laptop I could find for sale had a 64 bit OS (maybe because stocks were SO LOW while awaiting the new release). I wanted to stick with 32 bit.

I use my laptop for very standard stuff: email, surfing, blogging, financial stuff, mapping, music and photos. Most of my software is old (Microsoft Money 2000, for instance, no longer supported). I need to update Money and my Streets and Trips.

So my question: since I am going to be buying new software anyway - which I expect to use for the next four years - should I go with a 64 bit machine? Is everything going in that direction? Or would I just be paying more money for something I don't need, and I can wait until a future new computer? Or is the difference in price inconsequential and I might as well step up?

A related question: if I switch to 64 bit, should I have any concerns about my plug-ins working? Camera, aircard, external drives? I really don't understand the difference between 64 bit and 32 bit - but so far, every machine I have looked at online that has Windows 7 has the 64 bit version.

Since I am just hanging on my my fingernails when it comes to understanding computers, changing from one to another is always stressful for me - when it should be exciting and fun! HELP!

Thanks for any advice,
Laurie

Preheat the oven to 350ฐ. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a pot of boiling, salted water, cook the pasta for 4 minutes; drain and rinse with cold water. Transfer to a bowl and add the mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan and 1/4 cup parsley; season with salt.
2.	In a shallow bowl, beat the eggs. Place the breadcrumbs in another shallow bowl.
3.	Stuff the pasta-cheese mixture under the skin of each chicken breast. Dip the stuffed chicken breasts in the eggs, roll in the breadcrumbs, then place skin side up on the prepared pan. Don't use Microsoft Windows when accessing your bank account online.

I do not offer this recommendation lightly (and at the end of this column you'll find a link to another column wherein I explain an easy-to-use alternative). I have heard stories worthy of a screenplay about the myriad ways cyber crooks are evading nearly every security obstacle the banks put in their way.

But regardless of the methods used by the bank or the crooks, all of the attacks shared a single, undeniable common denominator: They succeeded because the bad guys were able to plant malicious software that gave them complete control over the victim's Windows computer.

Of course if you are confident of your Windows security you can just ignore this.

Deleted MS Security Essentials..

I have tried the MS Security Essentials anti-virus program for about a week and it is not that great.

It's not a bad program, but a couple of things are lacking that I liked in AVG..

The major one is that it cannot be set to turn off the computer after the scan is finished..

I contacted MS Security Essentials Support and was told that "Maybe" in a future version that could be included... but that was just a "Maybe"

With AVG, I can simply leave the computer on when I go to bed and AVG will automatically start a full scan at midnight and when it finishes scanning, it will turn off the computer... thus saving me having to get up at 0300 hrs to turn off the computer..

Another thing happened last night that clinched my decision to delete ... the MS Security Essentials program got about 80% completed and then "Locked Up"..

When I checked this morning it showed about 7 hours of scanning and everything was frozen... nothing moving ... computer still on and nothing happening...

I never had that problem with AVG... so I went into the control panel and deleted MS Security Essentials and then downloaded the latest FREE version of AVG..

BTW folks... there is a new version of the FREE AVG ready for download..

and the new version is a lot faster than the old version... only took 2 1/2 hours for a "Full" scan verses 5 1/2 hours with then old version of AVG..

Maybe in another year, I will once again test MS Security Essentials ... if they have improved it..

John

Coconut Chess Pie Recipe

Buttermilk Pie

Let me start off by saying that I HATE citrus flavourings. I usually leave that out and substitute vanilla extract. You can use whatever flavouring you like and it will not mess up the pie. I've made these for 20 years and never had a complaint. Well, one anyway...not enough pie.

---
Ingredients
---
1/2 cup butter
1 1/3 cup sugar
3 eggs, separated
3 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon finely grated lemon peel
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 pinch salt
1 pie shell, 9-inch

---
Instructions
---

Cream the butter and sugar; add the egg yolks, beating after each
addition. Beat in flour and buttermilk; add the lemon juice, lemon
peel, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Beat the egg whites until stiff;
fold into the filling. Pour the filling into the pie shell; cook in
center of a preheated 325ฐ oven until the custard is set and slightly
brown, about 1 hour.

If you want serve with berries, fresh fruit, or dessert
sauce.

Lefty's Road Kill Chill

Found this one on the web the other day...only problem is that this is my long lost recipe from my old BBS. The clown had ripped it directly from my old webpage and had not changed anything on it...down to the spinning armadillos bracketing the recipe. And he wanted to use Zinfandel wine in it...(gag)...wine removed and an extra beer added for more fortitude.

So, here it is digitally remastered and in Dolby 5.1 surround sound.

Ingredients

4 lbs. fresh road-kill or substitute meat
1 tsp. black pepper
2 beers dark
1-3 tsps. oregano or more **
2 Jalapeno peppers (chopped)
1 tbsp. cumin powder
2-4 tbsps. chili powder or more * *
1 tbsp. salt
4 cloves crushed garlic
1 16 oz. can Cantadina tomato sauce or any Mexican Style tomato you want (or Rotel)
1 tbsp. finely chopped green onions
1 tbsp finely chopped bell pepper
1 or more VERY LARGE ONIONS

* * The chili powder is the key ingredient, so your choice of chili powder will
significantly affect the flavor & fire of your chili. I've got Barilla's, California and New Mexico
chilli powder and each one tastes different. You can even make you own if you wish. (Recipe at bottom).

Directions

Grind up 4 pounds of fresh road-kill.

(Note: sometimes, due to the condition of the road-kill, grinding up may not be necessary).
Just about anything is acceptable (armadillo, rabbit, possum, chicken, moose or caribou, if you got it, I'm serious here!), but stay away from skunks since they smell funny and may have a negative effect on the final result. Remember, you want your road-kill riding high on the highway...but not too high if you know what I mean.

If you live in an area where there's not much highway traffic, or where
urbanization has scared off all the critters and your neighbors keep their pets
indoors, then you can use the following 4.75 pounds meat as a substitute:

Sustitute Meat:

2 lbs. ground beef (chili grind)
1 lb. venison (chili grind) .. pork is ok
1 lb. ground Italian sausage
12 oz. Mexican chorrizo sausage

--OR--

I prefer to use a 5 pound chuck roast cut up into bite sized pieces.

Mix all the meat in a large kettle.

If using the "substitute" ingredients above, then cut open the chorrizo wrapping
and squeeze out the contents into the mixture of other meats.

Brown the meat, stirring occasionally to mix well.

Once the meat has browned, add the tomato sauce, beer and all of the seasonings.

I think it might be a good idea at this early juncture to use only half of the
chili pepper and oregano and reserve the rest until later so that you can season
to your taste.

Cook over low-medium heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent
sticking, then reduce heat to low and cover. Cook covered for 1 hour, stirring
from time to time.

Sample for taste, increase seasoning as desired, and cook on low for another hour, stirring occasionally.

Sample again and add additional cumin, chili pepper, oregano, Jalapenos or
critters to suit your taste; turn off heat and place in the refrigerator over night.
Reheat on the following day and serve.

For an especially tasty presentation, serve up in bowls and sprinkle the top with chopped white onions and shredded Monterrey Jack and cheddar cheeses.

Feeds 6 to 8.

Remember nothing here is graven in stone. Add or leave out any ingredient you don't like. You'll find out pretty quickly which ones work for you.

Corn bread or Corn Bread Muffins go along mighty fine with this dish.

_______________________

Chilli powder

1 teaspoon paprika
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon oregano
2 teaspoons garlic powder

Mix together. Store in covered container for up to 6 months.

*The **Road-kill** aspect of this recipe is supposed to be fun and a lot of tongue-in-cheek. I've already gotten a couple of love notes from people, who appear to have a stick in a part of their anatomy, not seeing any humour anywhere and I don't need the hassle.* Further hint: remove stick, insert habanero.

I recently was shopping at Lowe's home center and at check out the clerk noticed my VA card and asked if I was military. I said no, but I was a disabled vet.
I received a 10% discount. I later asked and was told that this was policy. I knew about the special times when this was offered, but not that it was a permanent thing.
So now I get the discount every time and also receive it at Home Depot.
I don't know if this is a company wide thing or not but I have received it in 2 states now, try it, just say military and show your VA card.
The 10% comes in handy.
Tom

Social security problem

I have some in-laws that have a real Problem with social security and do not know what to do and I told them I would ask some of the smart people on my RV forum. The husband worked for a large natural gas company for several years until he had to retire on a $500 disability pension. He recently started drawing social security. They said he would draw $1000 a month but only get $500 because he had the disability pension. Problem is, they reduced the social security to $500 and also took away the pension. He worked all those years and only gets $500.I do not believe this in right. So far they are just laying back and think this is the way things are done and are excepting it. Any advice as to what should be done would be greatly appreciated.
Carl

VA News Release

VA Extends "Agent Orange" Benefits to More Veterans

Parkinson's Disease, Two Other Illnesses Recognized

WASHINGTON (Oct. 13, 2009) - Relying on an independent study by the
Institute of Medicine (IOM), Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K.
Shinseki decided to establish a service-connection for Vietnam Veterans
with three specific illnesses based on the latest evidence of an
association with the herbicides referred to Agent Orange.

The illnesses affected by the recent decision are B cell leukemias, such
as hairy cell leukemia; Parkinson's disease; and ischemic heart disease.

Used in Vietnam to defoliate trees and remove concealment for the enemy,
Agent Orange left a legacy of suffering and disability that continues to
the present. Between January 1965 and April 1970, an estimated 2.6
million military personnel who served in Vietnam were potentially
exposed to sprayed Agent Orange.

In practical terms, Veterans who served in Vietnam during the war and
who have a "presumed" illness don't have to prove an association between
their illnesses and their military service. This "presumption"
simplifies and speeds up the application process for benefits.

The Secretary's decision brings to 15 the number of presumed illnesses
recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

"We must do better reviews of illnesses that may be connected to
service, and we will," Shinseki added. "Veterans who endure health
problems deserve timely decisions based on solid evidence."

Other illnesses previously recognized under VA's "presumption" rule as
being caused by exposure to herbicides during the Vietnam War are:

* Acute and Subacute Transient Peripheral Neuropathy
<http://www.publichealth.va.gov/PUBLICHEALTH/exposures/agentorange/condi
tions/peripheral_neuropathy.asp>

*  AL Amyloidosis
tions/al_amyloidosis.asp>

*  Chloracne
tions/chloracne.asp>

*  Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
tions/chronic_leukemia.asp>

*  Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2)
tions/diabetes.asp>

*  Hodgkin's Disease
tions/hodgkins.asp>

*  Multiple Myeloma
tions/multiple_myeloma.asp>

*  Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
tions/nh_lymphoma.asp>

*  Porphyria Cutanea Tarda
tions/porphyria.asp>

*  Prostate Cancer
tions/prostate_cancer.asp>

*  Respiratory Cancers
tions/respiratory_cancers.asp> , and

* Soft Tissue Sarcoma (other than Osteosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma,
Kaposi's sarcoma, or Mesothelioma)
tions/st_sarcoma.asp>

Additional information about Agent Orange and VA's services and programs
for Veterans exposed to the chemical are available at
www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange
<http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange/> .

RV living in the winter

Well it's that time of year again and trying to be a good neighbor in our RVing community, I thought I would once again post my thoughts on getting through the winter while living in an RV..

Please remember that this is not necessarily the right way nor the wrong way ... it's just my way of getting through winter..

*********************************************************************

I live in my 1995 30 foot Prowler 5th wheel all year 'round and have absolutely no problems with cold weather.

Here in northern Nevada, the winters are about average for the middle USA. Temperatures range from 10 below to 30 degrees above at night and range from 20 to 60 degrees in the day. Moisture is fairly high because of the snow we get.

I have never had any problem with moisture or frozen pipes. I do use a heat tape on the water line and I have the trailer under-penned with a canvas skirt to keep the cold winds from blowing under the trailer.

I use only the trailer's forced air furnace to heat with, except the little space heater in the bathroom when I take my shower.. but I turn it off as soon as I'm out of the shower.

Electricity cost to much to try and heat the whole trailer with space heaters. My electric bill runs about $35-45 per month during the hard winter months. (13.5 cent per KW)

During the worst part of winter .. December, January and February, I used about 1 gallon of propane per 24 hour day.. during the milder months, my propane usage was less than a gallon per day..

Last winter propane was $2.75 per gal and cost about .(+-). $80/100 per month for everything...Furnace, Water Heater and Baking/Cooking.

On many RVs, the furnace heating ducts run along the same path as the water pipes.

Plus many RVs have the heating ducts routed into or through the basement storage areas where the holding tanks are located.

You should never use a space heater of any type, electric or gas, as the only source of heat in an RV.

It may not push enough heat into those places behind the wall where the water pipes are or down into the basement where the tanks are.

Remember the RV furnace is properly called a “FORCED AIR FURNACE”

I keep the inside temperature at about 67 degrees when I'm up and about, like watching TV or working on the computer. I turn it down to about 60 degrees when going to bed.

As for using a heat tape on the water line that feeds the RV,, here is the reply I made to someone else's question about using heat tapes on garden hoses.

Maybe it will answer any question you have on that subject....

*******************************************************************
Folks in the RV community know that a "Heat Tape" is a long plastic ribbon that is attached along a garden hose to keep it from freezing during winter time.

It works just like an electric blanket does on your bed. It cycles on and off to maintain a temperature of about 40 degrees on your water hose so the water won't freeze during the winter.

Contrary to what some people think... a heat tape that is Properly installed cannot and will not "Melt" a garden hose..

simply because a heat tape has a Pre-Set thermostat that keeps it at about 40 degrees F... and I have never seen or heard of a garden hose the will melt at 40 degrees..

Heat Tapes must be used in combination with some type of insulation.
Trying to use a heat tape without insulation won't work very well..

Try to get the heat tape model with "clear plastic bubble" on the end that has the plug on it.

When the tape is plugged in, a little red light will glow inside the clear plastic bubble and you will know that it's working properly.

Last year this type of heat tape were sold at Wal-marts and during my monthly shopping trip to Wal-mart last week, I asked if they were going to have them this year and was told they were on order..

Heat tapes come in different lengths, simply measure the length of your water hose First.........

and then buy the length of heat tape recommended on the back of the heat tape package for that length water hose.

Heat tapes cost about $15 to $25 depending on length. But they will last for 20 years if taken care of properly. Most hardware stores and places like Wal-Mart carry them as well as the insulation..

In my opinion, the best insulation to use are the "Foam Tubes" (about 99 cent each) with the split down the entire length and are designed to simply slip over the water hose.

Most people then wrap some type of tape around the insulated hose about every 6 inches, so the wind won't blow the insulation tubes off.

Very Important Notes:....

# 1. Use only plastic "Electrical Tape" to secure the heat tape to the hose and also to secure the foam tubes to the hose..

DO NOT use things like Duct Tape or plastic wire ties....

The reason is that every time a faucet is opened and closed inside the RV, the water hose will expand and contract a little bit ...

Electrician's tape will expand and contract with the hose.. but Duct tape and wire ties cannot and could wear a hole in both hose and heat tape over time..

#2. Be sure to lay the heat tape flat against the hose... do not let the heat tape overlap itself or make contact with itself at any point ...

and be careful to not "kink" the heat tape or make 90 degree sharp bends around corners..

Either of these things could cause a "Hot Spot" in the heat tape and melt the hose and insulation and could cause a fire..

********************************************************************

I would not worry too much about getting through the winter folks, just use good old common sense and you will be alright..

My 5th wheel is as warm as any "house" I have ever had and a heck of a lot cheaper living..

and again... Please remember that I am NOT an expert on these things... and have never said that the way I do things is the only way or the correct way... it's just my way..

Some of the stuff I have learned over the years, I've learned right here on the RV forums from other people like you.. and other things I learned the hard way... just like you did..

If you have any specific questions about what I did or how I did it,, drop me an email or contact me on the RV forums.

I'll be glad to help in any way I can.. after all, that's what neighbors do...

Best of luck,
John

I have the Military RV book for sites across the USA.

Sometime in January, I am planning on touring the southwest to include Roswell, NM, southern AZ with a trip to The Heart Attack Grill, Hoover Dam, Death Valley motorcycle ride mid Feb and eventually work my way to CA to ride Route 1 around the Big Sur area. I am retired and have no specific agenda, except for the Death Valley event. I leave in January and return early April.

This will be my second winter away. Last winter, I stayed in Destin, FL for three months, as I needed a bigger tow vehicle - traded in my Ford Explorer for a F-150.

I'm open to any suggestions of military campgrounds in southern NM, AZ and CA and something near Death Valley. I'm also open to places to avoid!

You may reply here or by email.
Mayo Clinic in AZ to no longer accepts Medicare

Mayo unit no longer to accept Medicare
Ginger Rough - Oct. 9, 2009 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic

One of the Mayo Clinic's two family-medicine practices in Arizona soon will stop accepting Medicare, leaving thousands of patients to pay out of pocket for routine doctor's visits or find a new physician.

The changes, which go into effect Jan. 1, apply only to primary-care services offered at Mayo Clinic Family Medicine-Arrowhead.

Mayo will accept Medicare for critical care and specialty services at its north Phoenix hospital. Lab services, physical therapy and X-rays at the Glendale family-practice office also will continue to be covered.

Hospital officials called the new policy a "two-year pilot program" and said Thursday that the changes are necessary because of low Medicare reimbursement rates.

"This is just a primary-care problem," said Dr. R. Scott Gorman, vice chairman of the executive-operations team at Mayo Clinic of Arizona. "We're trying to look at ways to make it more sustainable."

The family-practice office at 20199 N. 75th Ave. in Glendale lists about 3,000 Medicare patients among its regular clientele. Letters detailing the changes went out this week.

Gorman said Medicare reimbursement rates have remained stagnant over the past decade, while inflation for medical services has increased 4 percent to 8 percent annually.

"Medicare now only covers about half our costs," Gorman said.

The new policy will have a huge financial impact on patients who choose to stay with the practice. According to the letter, Medicare patients who choose to continue with their primary-care doctor will need to pay an annual $250 administrative fee, plus appointment fees of $175 to $400 per visit.

That means a patient who has a physical, plus three additional appointments during a 12-month period, will face annual out-of-pocket costs of about $1,500, according to the letter.

Mayo says it has no plans to expand its pilot program to its north Phoenix hospital, its family-practice center in Scottsdale, or its facilities in Rochester, Minn., and Jacksonville, Fla.

Patients at the Arrowhead practice were provided names of other family-care physicians in their area who accept Medicare, should they choose to switch doctors, Gorman said.

Mayo Clinic warned earlier this year that its operations were struggling. In a March statement, hospital administrators said income from patient care dropped to $205 million in 2008, down from $293 million in 2007. The hospital also estimated unpaid portions of Medicare and other senior programs at $765 million for the year.

Mayo has started a health-policy center and has been advocating reform changes that would shift the health-care system to one that focuses on prevention and wellness.

http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles...clinic1009.html

Windows protection for free! MSE

Is it perfect, no! Some of the paid for security suites offer more protection.

But in the free arena, competing with the other free A/V only real time scanners, it is looking good enough to pay attention.

Read this excerpt from the paid for subscription to Windows Secrets, which I subscribe to because they are totally independent.

Begin excerpt:

"Free MS Security Essentials are worth trying

By Woody Leonhard

Fast, full-featured, and free, Microsoft's new security suite is drawing accolades from experts and howls of agony from competitors.

If you're tired of your bloated and expensive security suite exhorting/extorting you for more money — and you can't stomach the way free AV products try to scare you into paying — it's time to try something new and better from an unexpected source.

Microsoft's new security suite in perspective

Last week, the 'Softies released the final version of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). The initial reports are remarkably upbeat, particularly for a Microsoft product labeled "version 1.0."

MSE takes over antivirus and antispyware duties while tossing in antirootkit features for good measure. If you have Windows Defender installed — Defender is a separate download for XP but comes with Vista and Windows 7 — MSE zaps it. There's no need for Defender if MSE is running.

Microsoft provides on its Security Essentials page downloads for 32-bit XP, 32- and 64-bit Vista, and 32- and 64-bit Windows 7. The correct version for your system will be selected automatically. Note, however, that there's no MSE version for 64-bit XP.

In order to install MSE, your PC has to pass Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage validation hurdle. (You've gotta wonder at how many bots out there are running on pirated copies of Win XP, which can't get MSE and other Microsoft updates.)

MSE conducts periodic scans and real-time malware monitoring. The program vets e-mail attachments and file downloads, too. By default, MSE deletes high-threat malware and asks for your permission to either delete or quarantine lesser threats. In general, the program does everything you'd expect an antivirus, antimalware, and/or antirootkit product to do.

The program is free for personal use. Even better, WS contributing editor Susan Bradley brought to my attention a fascinating clause in the MSE end-user license agreement:

"You may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices in your household for use by people who reside there or for use in your home-based small business."

For home-based small businesses, too? Most excellent!

By the way, Microsoft maintains an active support forum for MSE on the Microsoft Answers site.

The press likes to say that MSE is a stripped-down version of the late, unlamented Microsoft OneCare, a payola product I've deplored for years. As best I can tell, MSE has almost nothing in common with OneCare — except its target audience of individual users.

MSE is based on Microsoft's Forefront technology, which is designed to protect an enterprise's large servers. As a consumer product, however, MSE gains inspiration from Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool — a utility that's capable, targeted, and silent.

MSE is free. There is no MSE "Pro" or "Platinum" waiting in the wings to separate you from your hard-earned bucks. Refreshing.

Independent German testing company AV-Test.org says MSE picked up 98% of the viruses and 91% of the spyware thrown at it by the organization's tests, according to a story by CNET's Lance Whitney. MSE's rootkit detection was even better.

The program's performance runs on a par with other antivirus software. In the coming weeks, expect all the major AV-testing companies to weigh in with kill rates expressed to two decimal places. But the bottom line is already obvious: MSE works very well.

Antivirus software vendors strike back

If you're an antivirus software publisher, MSE's success is a bitter pill to swallow. The folks at Norton launched the first salvo in a Web-wide, uh, spitting contest the day MSE was released. Con Mallon, Symantec's consumer product marketing director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, blogged the following:

"The security industry has moved on from the product Microsoft is launching. Unique malware and social engineering fly under the radar of the traditional signature-based technology employed by free security tools such as Microsoft's. We believe the false sense of security provided by this tool is almost as dangerous as having no security at all."

On the Norton Protection blog, several other Symantec execs have contributed their own comments to the widespread ranting.

Symantec and other AV vendors claim that MSE is deficient because it doesn't successfully detect malware based on behavior. There's no doubt that protection based solely on signature files misses many kinds of malware. (See, for example, Robert McMillan's Network World article on reputation detection.) But many antivirus-only applications — Norton AV included — don't include behavior-based detection. For that, you have to pay for the companies' pricier software suites.

Microsoft counters its competitors' arguments by pointing to MSE's new Dynamic Signature Service (DSS) technology. The MSE reviewers' guide (a Word file you can download from the company's press site) states the following:

"[DSS] monitors the file, registry, network, and kernel-mode actions taken by unknown programs to look for suspicious behavior. Actions such as initiating unexpected network connections, attempting to modify privileged parts of the system, or downloading known malicious content all trigger requests for updates from the Dynamic Signature Service."

This technique updates the signature file in near–real time, according to Microsoft.

While the experts debate the relative merits of Norton's and Microsoft's antivirus engines, you can feel confident that MSE will provide more-than-adequate protection against the viruses, spyware, and rootkits you're likely to encounter. And, oh, did I mention that the program's free?

Up close and personal with Security Essentials

It's never a good idea to run two antivirus products simultaneously. MSE is no exception. Before you install MSE, uninstall your current antivirus product — or at least disable its real-time AV component, if you need other parts of a protection suite.

MSE doesn't include a firewall. If you want an outbound firewall, you'll need to install one yourself. WS contributing editor Robert Vamosi's Aug. 27 Top Story recommends the free Comodo Internet Security and Agnitum Outpost Firewall.

Personally, I don't use an outbound firewall — and my fellow editors routinely take me to task for my brazen attitude. But if you feel the need to complement the inbound protection offered by Windows' built-in firewall with an outbound monitor, Comodo's a good choice. Just make sure you install Comodo's firewall as a standalone product, without its antivirus partner, if you use MSE.

Keep in mind that MSE updates itself automatically, even if you've set Windows Update or Microsoft Update to prompt you before downloading and/or installing updates.

Getting started with MSE is a breeze: a couple of clicks get you past the Genuine Advantage hurdle. Beyond that, no registration or personal information is required. You don't have to make any program choices. All of the default settings — daily updates, weekly full scans, remove high-level threats automatically, review medium- and low-level threats, enable real-time protection — make sense for just about everybody. (See Figure 1.)

Figure 1. The Microsoft Security Essentials Home screen provides standard and custom scan options.

Once MSE is installed, you can adjust a myriad of settings by opening the program via its Start menu shortcut and choosing the Settings tab. There you'll find options for enabling scans of removable drives during full scans and excluding specific files or file types — presumably to override false positives. You can also review your PC's scan history. (See Figure 2.)

Figure 2. Set MSE to scan removable drives and to exclude files or file types via the Settings tab.

Mostly, MSE just works. The program sits in the background, soaks up few CPU cycles, and pops up only when you have to make a decision about deleting or quarantining a "moderate" or "low-level" threat. It's very simple and very effective. The gadfly in me would also add: It's very unlike Microsoft.

Security hath its price — even with freeware

Even though you can set MSE to send additional information to Microsoft about the malicious software you encounter, you can't "opt out" of the program's phone-home connection. In the Microsoft SpyNet section under MSE's Settings tab, you must agree to the following "option":

"Send basic information to Microsoft about software that Microsoft Security Essentials detects, including where the software came from, the actions that you apply or that Microsoft Security Essentials applies automatically, and whether the actions were successful."

As I explained in my July 9 column, that kind of privacy intrusion is, alas, part of the deal. Microsoft uses the information to keep its databases updated. At the same time, information about you and your PC ends up in Microsoft's enormous data mine. Think of it as informational collateral damage.

Is free Windows protection worth the erosion of your privacy? Only you can make that decision. But rest assured that all of the other antivirus players are either gathering that data now or are looking at ways to, uh, "monetize" it. No matter how you slice it, in the battle against malware, your privacy gets left in the lurch."

End Excerpt

Worth a look at least and to follow.

I pay for my security suite from Kaspersky, but this new development may lure me away for free. But that remains to be seen.

As with all paid for or free protection I highly recommend a free scanner, Malwarebytes, as a back up scanner. Like getting a second opinion from another Doc.

DELL closing NC plant

The following is a news release I found on Google Technical News site... and I wonder if it will effect the "Support" that Dell provides...

The one experience I had with Dell Support was great... hope it continues to be..

****************************************************************
NEWS RELEASE....

Dell is closing its desktop PC manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The cost-cutting move will ax 905 jobs, with 600 workers set to be laid off in November and the rest in January, Dell said Wednesday.

"This is a difficult decision, especially for our North Carolina colleagues, but a necessary one for Dell customers and our company," Frank Miller, vice president of Dell's Public Business Unit Supply Chain, said in a statement.

Dell had announced some layoffs at the North Carolina plant in March but gave no indication that the plant itself might be in danger of shutting down.

This plant closure is just the latest in a series of efforts by Dell to shrink expenses worldwide by billions of dollars.

In 2007, the company said it would lay off 8,800 employees, or 10 percent of its global workforce. However, the company modified that number last year, cautioning workers to expect even deeper cuts.

Over the past few years, employees in Canada, Ireland, and, of course, the U.S. have gotten pink slips.

The appetite of consumers toward laptops over desktops was a factor behind the decision to close the North Carolina plant, which opened four years ago. Last year, Dell shut down its desktop manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas

***************************************************************

Quartzfest 2010 Amateur Radio Event

Hello, fellow SKP hams,

Cliff Haycock, KD4ZBP, here. My wife, Virginia, KE4VRW, and I are coordinators for Quartzfest 2010. An Amateur Radio Event that takes place near the end of January. Herewith is a press release about the event. Please read it and pass on the word about Quartzfest 2010.

QUARTZFEST PRESS RELEASE

The annual Quartzfest Amateur Radio Operators event, Quartzfest 2010, is scheduled for January 17 - January 23, 2010 at Mile Marker 99, Quartzsite, AZ.

Quartzfest 2010 will provide Amateur Radio Operators the opportunity to share their expertise and learn more about their hobby. There will be seminars and presentations on many facets of Amateur Radio. Some of the areas covered are: antennas, antenna tuners, amplifiers, most of the digital modes, IRLP, PSK31, and Winlink 2000 for emailing over radio.

There will be an Antenna Walkabout, your chance to look at and ask questions about the various types of antennas and their mounts on different kinds of RVs. There will be a four-wheeler trip, VE testing, "donuts-and" some mornings, and special events for the ladies.

There likely will be WiFi hotspots.

These events started eight years ago. At the first Quartzfest there were twenty-four rigs. At Quartzfest 2009 there were 128 rigs. Maybe 150 rigs for Quartzfest 2010?

Talk-in frequency is 146.55 simplex. And, of course, we also use the Quartzsite, AZ repeater, 145.500 down, no PL required.

Remember, this is a no-services area: no electric, water or dump facilities. You must be 100% self-contained.
How Can This Be Legal

I recently listed a property for sale. This is a condominium in a complex of over 200 condominiums. It is fairly easy to determine actual value (within a narrow range). I have received offers from prospective buyers with FHA loans (3% down) offering above full asking price but requesting a credit through escrow (effectively reducing the price to me back to asking price). However, they are using the credit as their 3% down payment and closing costs. Didn't we just recently decide that this type of credit (no skin in the game) caused serious problems for the economy? Forget that issue. Forget the fact that if this happens the government (those of us that actually pay income taxes) are guaranteeing this loan. The real question is, how can this possibly be legal????? These offers are coming in through large/national and small/local Realtors. The fact that this is still going on is confusing and depressing. What do you think?

Art

We're at one of our C2C parks where "watering your lawn is encouraged, and sprinklers are available."

So we arrived on Sunday and, as usual when at a full hookup site, Earl puts a splitter on the water faucet so that we can hook up a hose to our black tank flush. Monday afternoon, the guy parked next to us (who is obviously here on a long-term basis), proceeds to come over to OUR site and unhook OUR hose (the one we use for the black tank flush), so he can hook up his hose to water his lawn! Not only did he not bother to come ask us if we would mind if he did that (we would have said sure, go ahead), when he was finished, he didn't even bother to hook our hose back up! I've seen people do a lot of inconsiderate things, but that takes the cake! (Earl unhooked our water hose last night because of possible freezing weather overnight, and when he hooked it back up this morning, he took the splitter off...I'd like to see the guy come over and unhookup our hose now! ).

Fed's plan for the dollar.

Saw a very clear and understandable interview yesterday on CNBC about the long term future for the dollar. Summary:
There is no combination of growth and taxes that will pay off the $60 Trillion in debt the U.S. govt has now. But the Fed figures that $30 Trillion is possible with economic growth and higher taxes. So the plan is to depreciate the dollar by half over the next few years to make it possible to pay off the $60 Trillion with cheaper dollars. They will continue to keep interest rates low to stimulate growth and devalue the dollar. The Int'l Monitary Fund (IMF) will issue a sort of money called ADR's and over time these will replace the dollar as the world's reserve currency.
We are on very shaky ground here. If the markets start to panic over the falling dollar and everyone knows it is going down for the forseeable future they could start dumping it and the dollar could collapse. On the other hand, if the Fed sees this happening it will pop interest rates higher by a large amount to shock the markets and force the dollar back higher. But this will stifle growth!!
The guy is advising his clients to buy gold for 10% of their portfolios even at $1000 per ounce.

I don't like gold because I don't know how to safely store it and would certainly not trust investments in it like ETF's. Furthermore, I don't believe it will be easy to spend it if all goes south because it isn't a recognizable currency (like for spending at the grocery store.)

Would appreciate ideas on protecting savings from those who have thought about this problem.

BTW, I am not interested in political sloganeering or finger pointing. I am just trying to be able to RV 10 years from now.

NO Medicare increase !

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House voted overwhelmingly Thursday to eliminate monthly premium increases for millions of Medicare patients next year.

It voted 406 to 18 to send the bill to the Senate, which is expected to act soon. Lawmakers said older Americans shouldn't have to pay higher Medicare Part B premiums because they are not expected to get a cost of living increase from Social Security.

The vast majority of Medicare recipients already are exempt from Part B premium increases because of a hold-harmless provision that kicks in when there is no increase in Social Security.

Still, several million would face monthly premium increases of $8 to $23, without congressional action. The standard monthly premium is $96.40 this year.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland, in a rare break with fellow Democrats, voted against the measure, saying it would mainly help wealthy Medicare recipients.

"If we take care of everybody, we won't be able to take care of those who need us most," Hoyer said.

About 42 million seniors and people with disabilities are enrolled in Medicare Part B, which provides coverage for doctor's visits. By law, about three-fourths are exempt from premium increases when there is no increase in Social Security payments.

The Social Security Administration projects no cost-of-living increases for the next two years because the adjustments are pegged to inflation, which has been negative this year, largely because energy prices are below 2008 levels.

Most of the 11 million or so patients who are not exempt from premium increases are low-income people who also qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance program for the poor, pays their Medicare premiums, meaning states would bear some of the costs.

Among the rest who are not exempt, a little more than 2 million are high-income seniors -- singles making more than $85,000 a year and couples making more than $170,000. Also, about 1.3 million new enrollees would not be exempt.

Without congressional action, the Medicare trustees have projected that standard Medicare Part B premiums would go from $96.40 a month this year to $104.20 a month in 2010. The Congressional Budget Office projects premiums could go to $119.40.

The House bill would eliminate all Part B premium increases, using $2.8 billion in other Medicare funding. Democrats said they had to act on a bill quickly so the administration could set premium rates for next year and inform seniors this fall.

Republican lawmakers complained about the short notice of the vote. The bill was unveiled Wednesday and a vote was scheduled for a day later, with no public hearings.

"Why couldn't we have held a hearing on this and marked the bill up in the month that we've been back?" said Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas.

Democrats said a recession is a bad time to increase Medicare premiums for any seniors, especially when their Social Security payments are frozen.

"Especially given the state of the economy, we must act to ensure that all seniors are treated fairly," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees Medicare.

A 26 year old young lady decided he was not going fast enough and after a few very close runs at his rear bumper, she dropped back about 45 feet and floored it. She lodged her car under the rear of my brothers car. It was totaled. My brother left in the ambulance for the hospital and was realeasd a few hours later with a $10,000 bill. My brother hired a lawyer and was told that his and the gals mothers insurance would pay for everything. The gals mother had lent the daughter her car because the daughter had wreaked her car and had a suspended drivers license. My brother was advised that if he did not settle now, it could take several years. He signed papers saying he would end up with about $10,000. They started out with $30,000 from both insu. co. and that left $20,000 after the lawyer took 1/3rd and and $10,000 for the medical costs.Problem is, that the medical costs were not paid because they said medicare would pay for it. Now medicare has billed my brother for the $10,000. Since my brother signed the legal papers saying he can never come back on the mother or her daughter, my brother is getting nothing and may even end up in the hole along with a hurt neck and back. I know my brother seemed to not have a very good lawyer, but how could something like this happen? My brother is very tired of all this mess and just wants to forget about it.
Carl

Hi All,

I'm looking for suggestions on what frequency too use for emergency's out in the boondocks. I'm on o2 24/7, died on 5/27/09 in the ER from CHF and was brought back. I just got a new set of eyes last month(cataracts removed), so now I can travel again.

I bootlegged low 10m, 40yrs ago, as I could pass the advance theory part but not the code. I hate code and yes I know it purpose, hence the requirement. I retired as a HVAC&R design engineer where I was designing multi-million control systems, AWS CWI(certified weld inspector for nuke plants) but I can't pass amateur code tests. I was known to have a extremely good station(FT101E and mod/quad beam on a hamII), where I liked doing search and rescue with the Colo State Patrol(lost children my specialty). I finally figured out that my brain doesn't function quick enough too make code interesting, so I lost interest. Now I would like too be legal.

I want too travel the boondocks of the USA, Canada and Alaska, so I need radio for the wife incase I take another dirt nap.

Suggestions and comments?

We visited the flight 93, 9/11 crash site in rural PA yesterday for the second time the first being 2005. It is just as sobering the second time around as the first. The crew and passengers are real heroes of the highest order in my book. We have now visited the Flight 93 crash site, the Twin Towers in NYC and the Federal building in Oklahoma City, OK. I'm going to try for the Pentagon in the spring. I think out of all these sites the one bothers me the most is Oklahoma City bombing because it was a US citizen that carried out the cowardly deed. If you have the opportunity to visit these sites please take the time to do so, you won't regret it.

Golden Access passport card

Picked up a golden access passport card today after so many vets had told me I could get one. Thought you had to be 100% disabled, but not so---it just has to be a documented as a permanent disablilty--no % required. Had to take the VA letter that showed where I was awarded disablilty. The card is free. It also is not tied to age like the golden age passport card--age 62, one time $10 charge.

BTW the official program is now called "America the Beautiful--The National Parks & Federal Recreation Lands Pass" followed by senior pass or access pass.

The 50% off campgrounds is off the basic (tent ) fee not the hook ups. So at LBL, for example, it costs $12 to tent camp, so you get $6 off whatever type of site you need. Their 50 amp full hook up is normally $32, so it would cost $26 instead. Every little bit helps!

Magic Jack? No kidding, it just works!

Project:
Try VoIP services again after trying Lingo for a year several years ago for $19.95 a month. Fair service, some re-calls required for poor connections, called Europe free whenever I wanted as well as Canada and the US, and the US possessions. VoIP does not fax at all in most cases, and unreliably in some cases, and does work fine in a tiny minority of cases. This includes Vonage and most of the bundled VoIP offers from cable/DSL providers.

What I ordered:

Magic Jack. I admittedly discounted a phone service sold at Walgreen's and getting national advertising akin to Ron Popeil's many products. It had to be either poor quality, a rip off, or unreliable at best. I expected delays, echoes, garbled connections, problems with set up, in short, anybody offering me free US and Canada service for $19.95 a year, $39.95 for the initial hardware and first year service plus tax or shipping from Magic Jack online, could not work reliably. Especially with free voicemail and caller ID? Not to mention free directory assistance? NO way! My Magic Jack came in yesterday, three days after my new Panasonic 4 station wireless home phone system arrived.

My situation:
I needed free long distance and fax capability at home for my home office when I was working. The only choice for 100% reliable faxing was a standard landline. For free long distance and basic landline here cost $65.00 a month. That does not include caller ID, voicemail, etc. Add $25.00 for that feature package. I just retired from my position and do not need to fax anymore, and gave back my company cell phone with free long distance and caller ID voicemail etc. So now my home phone becomes my primary contact point. I will work again, just need to move on to something more fun. So my home number now requires the features for the future.

My three year old V-Tech three station home wireless phone system had one of the three station/handsets (because I ran over with my tractor last year) failing and the dialing was a pain; had to hit numbers twice. So I ordered both a new home phone system and the Magic Jack together. My thinking is to run both side by side, give my new Magic Jack number to my friends and family who call me the most, and see if it would be a replacement for my expensive AT&T landline with no features, but reliable faxing.

My wife has the only cell phone in the house now. ( I hate electronic leashes, only have one when I have to, it's not about the money.)

Set up:
I hooked the new phone system to my landline to make sure it worked fine which it did. I made the mistake of leaving my old wireless system unplugged until the Magic Jack arrived, and found that soon the batteries would have failed as it took several hours to recharge the batteries. Stand by times shot.

I hooked up the Magic Jack according to directions which took five minutes, only because the menus had to be re-entered or figured out. There are no written instructions other than plug it in and wait for the three minutes or so for it to be recognized and the set up menus to appear, and no live technical help by phone, but you can get a live chat going. I used our standard phone that is line powered for my first tests and set up while the old wireless system charged back up.

I had to reboot and register twice, don't ask me why. I had a choice of prefixes in several local cities/towns to automatically assign a phone number and picked one that would give best access with no local long distance charges to friends and family.

Then voilเ! I had a dial tone. So far so good. But I expected disappointment.

Testing:
It is now 24 hours since I set it up. I have not set up voice mail, nor any advanced features yet. I left my computer on all night to be sure no hassles there supporting the service, and all I have is praise for the service. The software hung in there as well.

Call Quality Thus Far:
I have made about 20 calls so far both local and to friends in Las Vegas and California. I have received about ten calls back. So far the sound quality and immediate dial tone are better than my landline. NO echoes, no delays, and no failures.

Test system:
8 mbs cable modem, behind which is a wireless router, 802.11 B, Magic Jack plugged into front USB port on my main computer, the old wireless three station phone system plugged into the Magic Jack now, and the new phone system plugged into my old AT&T landline for the next month or two.

Impressions and things they don't tell you up front:

The pluses:
I found are several. Free directory assistance, caller ID works great, and voicemail had a big surprise. I made a few test calls to my own number and in just a few minutes the voicemails were emailed to me in .Wav format. What the heck? OK I clicked on the attachment and heard my hangups from testing. Deleted them and pressed on. Remember I had not set up any voicemail, it just worked. I'll figure out the advanced settings and greetings today or tomorrow. (Retired!) I already mentioned call quality but your mileage may vary with Air Cards or DSL, if they even offer that without basic landline service. You can call any Magic Jack owner anywhere in the world for free, international calls to landlines and cell phones cost extra, about the same as a landline service.

Neutral things I found:
By neutral I mean things that can be bad for one, good for another.
1. My assigned phone number will never be in a directory. It costs nothing. Now you can look at that two ways. They save paying for their customers being listed. Or you don't have to pay for a private number that is unlisted at whatever they charge for that today. Perhaps not a great thing if you want to use it for a business. Or you need to have relatives able to look you up.

2. You have to dial just the area code, not a 1 in front, even for local calls. That can be an irritant for some, for me just three more digits to dial, and free.

4. You can hook up a headset and use it directly from your computer, or just use the phones attached.

5. When you make or take a call the Magic Jack on screen window comes up on your monitor. You can view the call logs etc from there too.

Negatives:
1. They will not port your old phone number so for some a change like this means a lot of notifications to friends and business associates as you also won't be listed in a directory.

2. You must leave your computer on 24/7 for it to work.

3. If using an air card it will be subject to the same signal strength issues a cell phone is such as breaking up in fringe areas etc.

4. If your power goes out so does your phone system. However, if the power goes out so does my/any wireless plugged in phones anyway, even if plugged into a regular landline. However, if you plug the computer and the screen and the main unit of your wireless home phone system into an appropriately rated UPS/surge protector, you can have from a few minutes of power to several hours. I have a whole house wired in automatic generator that switches in within 20 seconds of any power outage, and comes back on only after 20 seconds of smooth power with no surges. Since all my computers and phones are on UPS', any UPS can get me past 20 seconds. I sized mine for 5 minutes. Most of us have at least one cell phone anyway right?

5. 911 calls. OK I don't know if that is going to work or not, but they guarantee nothing. Again, cell phones? Then again I haven't tried to set it up so it may work here, or elsewhere.

6. No real help files except FAQs online and live chats, no phone support. Getting through setup is easy but maybe a bit misleading as you go requiring starting over. Support is different, not bad, nor immediate if you can't find your question in the FAQs online.

I'll update this again after a month or two and whether I decided to cancel my landline in favor of this appliance or not.

Anyone with comments especially using one on the road with air cards is welcome to post here.

Initially I am highly impressed. I was audited by the workman's comp person today, (Last time thank goodness . . . retired again!) and she came to my house. When I told her I had a new toy she said if it is a Magic Jack don't bother. I thought I was about to hear bad things, but instead she told me they got theirs two months or so ago and dropped their landline and haven't had a problem.

Mr Spiker and Miz Holly

To all board participants;

Miz Holly and myself started our escapades in the Chimacum thread back in early July. Prior to this thread we had not noticed or paid any attention to each other. It started with a post or 2 about Dungeness Crab and went pretty far afield from there. Since that time we have become great friends and are in contact with each other by email on a regular basis. Several folks on the board knew about this and have just kept the information to themselves as we have. At no time has anything we posted been meant to be taken as mean, sexual, political, or anything other than a bit of good old fashioned fun. It does seem at times that things on the board get pretty dry, etc. so we thought we might try and lighten the mood a bit. If by our actions we have offended anybody we apologize, this was not our intent.

With that being said you can all rest assured that we will not subject you to any descriptions of any future escapades we may enjoy after we actually meet in person.

Sincerly,
Mr Spiker and Miz Holly

MiFi from Verizon

We are looking at options for both Mike and me to be on the internet at the same time. Does anyone use the MiFi unit that Verizon offers? My understanding five different wireless devices can be used at the same time -- the cost after the purchase of the device is the same as the data plan I have now with my air card in the laptop. Just looking for inut. thanks

Repair Damaged Drives With Linux

http://www.pcplus.co.uk/node/3108/

One of the best developments in recent years has been the Live CD. These offer a fully functional Linux installation that runs from an optical drive. If you’ve got enough memory, you can even install new packages to the RAM disk just as you would when completing a standard installation. This makes a recent release of a Live CD-based installer like Ubuntu Jaunty the perfect system recovery tool. Not only does it include every package you might require, but because it runs from the optical drive rather than the hard drive, your data isn’t touched and there’s no chance files will be overwritten without direct input. It’s the obvious place to start when you get stuck.

I know I have been on the Workkamper site before, but for some reason, I can't seem to find it when I want it. I did it from work, so bookmarking doesn't always help. . . .hopefully when I only work on this one computer it will help my feeble brain remember.

No More Traditional Medicare?

I just became aware of a change in Medicare that may really impact fulltimers in a negative way. It seems that the Medicare Modernization Act passed by Congress in 2003 has a plan to start phasing out traditional Medicare in 2010.

As you may recall, the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 was the bill that put the Part D prescription drug benefit in place. But what most don't know, is that inside that bill was also a "trojan horse" that was delayed until 2010...a provision to start slowly eliminating the Original Medicare plan as we know it. What would be left would be private Medicare plans, also called "Advantage Medicare Plans" that are like HMOs.

The problem with the Advantage plans, is that they are not portable anywhere in the country, the way traditional Medicare is. Right now, if you have traditional Medicare, you can go to any doctor or hospital you want to go to, anywhere in the country.

Here's a link to a piece written by the Gray Panthers regarding this issue

http://mlyon01.wordpress.com/2007/03/07/th...edicare-itself/

I'm just learning about this myself, but the implications alarm me.
