Joining for multiple years? Maybe not a good idea...

Hello all,

My husband and I have been Escapees members since 1996, and fulltimers since 2000. Like many fulltimers, we had heard about SkyMed's services, and eventually joined in 2005. At that time, we joined for one year, through SkyMed's agent Mr. Miller. A year later, we renewed for an additional year.

In October of 2007, while at the Escapees Medium Duty Truck rally in Sedalia, MO, we wanted to renew for a third year. Mr. Miller had since retired, but there was a different SkyMed agent at the rally. We expressed our desire to renew for a year, but were told by this agent that he didn't write a renewal for just one year, and that he renews only for multiple years. He explained that he does this because it saves US so much money to purchase a 5-year membership, rather than just a one year membership.

We believed him when he said he did not write renewals for one year, so we purchased the 5-year membership (just under $1,900). We were both in extremely good health at the time and estimated that we had another 7 or 8 good traveling years ahead of us.

Unfortunately, more traveling is not in the cards for us, as my husband has developed some serious medical problems. In fact, we have purchased a condo, and, sadly, our truck and trailer have been sold. I phoned Sky Med today about getting a refund on the three years of membership that will go unused. (We definitely will be unable to travel at all.) I was told that there are no refunds. I explained that Sky Med's agent had told me he would not write just a one year policy. That made no difference - there are no refunds. By my calculations, we should be getting a refund for three years membership.

The reason I'm writing is to make all of you aware of this policy. Not only did they get nearly $1,900 of our money, 5 years in advance, but they now get to keep three years worth of that money, when there's no chance that we will be using their services during the next three years. I feel as though we were pushed into the 5-year renewal - instead of a 1-year renewal - and now that they have our money, we're just out of luck. (Kind of a nice little deal they have going for themselves, isn't it?) Needless to say, we could really use the refund.

At any rate, you might want to give serious thought as to whether or not to join Sky Med for multiple years - or at all. As for me, since they're based in Arizona, I'll be writing the AZ Attorney General. This appears to be an industry that needs some regulation.

Thanks for listening. We will miss Escapees...

Why have an agent

With the purchase of my motorhome in 2005 I for the first time was getting insurance through an agent, AON / Poliseek. I had thought that one of the things you got with an agent was assistence with problems with the insurance company. I have found that all Poliseek is providing is the reference to an insurance company and gets a piece of the action every year..

Right now, I have a claim with National Interstate that has dragged on for two weeks now and looks like I won't even know if the MH will be repaired or totalled for another two to three weeks minimum. Part of this is having to leave the MH in place while everybody comes, looks and say "Yep, the frig caught fire". I called Poliseek to see if they could be of assistence with explaining to the insurance co that they are costing me money everyday they cause a delay. Site rental, alternate living arrangements, insurance payments etc, etc, etc.

The answer - "We only do policy service, anything related to a claim is purely with the carrier". At this point, I don't see what Poliseek is doing to justify the amount they get each year.

One big lesson - If you are a fulltimer, increase emergency living expenses to what you may feel are rediculous levels or don't even bother. A major loss will probably take at least a month maybe two to resolve much less get you back in your home.

The only people that have been reasonable in this are Buddy Gregg. They are ready and willing to help me get the unit moved, coordinate with the insurance co, do whatever is needed. Now that it has dragged on, they may have other work and not be in a position anymore to help. Then apparently it is my job to find another facility.

The insurance co is telling me about my policy limits, their need for Norcold to see the unit where it burned and that it will take one or more weeks to price out repair/replace and Poliseek is telling me to give them a call with any policy changes. When this is resolved, the changes are going to be cancellation.

Now that I have ranted some, I still don't feel better. If this gets removed by the admin, I fully understand. Supposedly, this section of the forum is to ask questions not rant.

We have foremost insurance and last March we had to have a new roof put on the rig due to a low hanging tree limb. I was told that if I used the recommended repair shop the roof would be warranted for the life of the rig. We did use the recommended shop and they did the repairs, but when we pulled the rig out of the shop it had bubbles in the roof, and when I ask about all the bubbles in the roof, the service guy said the sun would draw the bubbles out. I didn't question it because I do know that works with some types of flooring.

Now about 18 months later the bubbles are getting bigger instead of shrinking. When I contacted Foremost they referred me to the dealer that installed the roof. I contacted them and they said they would have to get with the adjuster and they would call me back. A week later I called the shop back and they said they were still waiting on the adjuster to call them back. I tried the adjuster last week and had to leave a message, today I had to leave another message with the adjusters supervisor.

I am 1200 miles from the shop that did the repairs, and nobody wants to return my calls. What are my options?

I received an email from PoliSeek that they have taken over Aon. I went to their website and can find no login access to view my account. With AON I could see my profile and policies. At PoliSeek I could find no login access. One site shows all the insurance agencies phone number and website indicating that we should use these to make payments.

Apparently PoliSeek has the information from Aon concerning my profile and private information, yet I do not have access to modify or change this information. I will assume that this must be checked by phone through an agent. The agent that I was familar with, is he still at the company or are we to deal with different personnel.

I was comfortable using Aon to handle my insurance, but now I am working with a completely foreign group of people to place my confidence in to help me find the insurance I need. This disturbs me.

BC

Stolen RV-Final Chapter

Hi Folks:

Well, we finally got someone at Foremost who really wanted to help us make an informed decision. You see, after 50 years of RVing, we finally had a Claim! A total loss claim at that.
What I'm saying is that none of us come into the world knowing everything do we? And certainly not how to navigate through a Total Loss Claim on a RV.

So, let my experience be a lesson for you as well. It sure was for me. Lesson # 1. Do not underinsure your "contents". You know you will add "stuff" so insure it even if you haven't bought it yet! You will be aked to provide a list of everything in the trailer that is not a part of the trailer. Including Brand Name, Purchase Date, Price , etc. So, when a claim occurs, whip out your retained list! Add to the list as you go along.

Lesson # 2.-Always have Total Replacement coverage. Lesson # 3.-If you do not want to or cannot exercise this option-be prepared to lose money. In our case we were unable to take a replacement unit due to the factory at Frontier RV being awarded a huge FEMA contract which will take 100% of their capacity for at least 90 days. By the time they get back making RV's, they will be 20 10 models and I'll be 4-payments deep into a RV that I don't have! Lesson # 4. All claims adjusters are not created equal. If you can't communicate intelligently with the one assigned to your case, ask for help. They will get you one you can work with.

We are going to do a solo trip to the Mountains in May. Our trip last year was rudely interrupted by Hurricane "Ike" and we don't intend to lose another summer due to a sleezeball who could,nt keep his hands off others property!

If we find we can't live without a RV, we know where they are "on sale". Look for us "down the road",

Patmo

Help with Claim

Randy:

We are in the middle of a claim with Foremost on a stolen RV. So far, I'm not to impressed with the speed of communications with my Claim Processor. It takes two days to get a return call.

Mail from the Home Office takes five days to clear the Home Office and another three days to get to me. My return mail goes over night! So, I guess I'm over anxious!

The meter is running on a payment to my lender on the 21st of April. On a RV I no longer enjoy having. A final payment on my Insurance Policy is due on May 1. Both of these dates were communicated with the initial claim on the 31st of March! Is this "business as usual"?

Who do I turn to in your Organization if I'm not pleased with the final settlement offer. It's a 2009 Model TT used one time prior to the theft. So, it's difficult for me to see anything less than 100% of the original sales price as being fair!

Your thought's please!

Patmo

We usually use the 5th wheel under 30 days a year.

We are finding it difficult to locate policy writers in NJ.
Well, that's what the insurance companies lump us into for our ministry while we are trying to get insurance on the new used 5'er. Premiums can be 2 to 3 times higher because we are a "high risk" kind of activity (race cars and rock bands)???? It's really just like a parsonage for a church! It will be housing the director of the ministry while we are along the border (U S side) and while we move around the country promoting the needs of orphans around the world, train other leaders, and raise funds for projects at orphanages. Now it would make sense if in the future we start making the rounds of the racing circuit of HDTs pulling 5th wheels around a track somewhere...!!!!
This is probably not what most of you come across with insuring your rigs, so what we really need are your prayers to help get the right insurance at the right price.

Bless y'all,
rocky

Coach Net Service

Earlier this week we had need to call Coach Net for service on two blown tires on our Jeep. It took about an hour for the tow to arrive at our location. The driver was very young and hooked the tow cables under the front of the Jeep to move the vehicle up on to the bed of the truck. I did not check where he had hooked the cable at the time. We discovered the problem when we got the Jeep up on the rack to replace the tires and check the front end. The driver had hooked the cable on the left side of the Jeep to the steering arm/tie rod. He had pulled the arm forward and bend it pretty bad. Bottom line about $1400.00 worth of damage. When I called Coach Net to report the problem, they were right on it and are working with me now to resolve the problem. I am so glad that we have Coach Net. I will update when the problem is solved.

Problem has been solved. Great people and great service at Coach net!

Transition from BCBS to Medicare

My rates with another company have gone up twice this year and alternatives to keep the price down are higher deductibles and less coverage. Our philosophy for all insurance is to cover what we could not to avoid a major disruption in our lives due to potential health issues. We want our health insurance to pay for catastrophic illness or accident as we will accept responsibly for routine preventive care and maintenance.

Though my recent premium increases prompted my current search efforts I know price isn't everything but thought it was a good idea to update myself on current health insurance products avaialbe. We have FT'ed for 8 years, no employer health benefits so pay for our own health insurance premiums. Transition from employer paid premiums was a work out, you don't realize how much you take for granted, there is a lot of behind the scenes work to maintain insurance coverage. I see BCBS of TX is subsidiary Health Care Service Corporation and is rated A+ by Best.

1) Still a couple of years to go but what happens when BCBS insureds turn 65?

2) More specifically individuals that pay their own BCBS premiums?

3) Does BCBS automatically convert to Medicare? and a supplemental Medicare Policy to match the pre-Medicare coverage?

4) Any quick tips to assist me in my health insurance shopping or web links for checklist/guide for health insurance shopping?

It is impossible to anticipate everything but I want to do my homework to make an informed decision.

Thank you for your time.

Hi all, I have read the posts positive & negative about the different insurance companies. We've been with AON [National Interstate] for quite some time.
The first time we had to use the company we ran into a snag in coverage. We were fortunately, finally able to take care of things ourselves after 3 days of being stranded. I have to say, I am now extremely disappointed in AON. I have been "working" on the phone with AON to get some/any response from them on my situation and how to rectify it since mid June. I have called and they always say they will get back to me but obviously haven't.
Maybe if it is in the forum that they have a total lack of respect for their customers, it will either spur someone in the company to at least try and fix things or at the very least, let prospective customers know, that their rates and customer service are great UNTIL you have a problem. They demanded that I send them a letter stating why I was cancelling. I did. They then sent me a letter questioning if I had other insurance as I was at risk. Of course, I wasn't stupid, with a motorhome financed I wasn't about to let my coverage lapse. My policy lapsed on 7/31. About 8/6 I received a multi page insurance renewal policy. I called. The lady stated that I was receiving a letter of cancellation. Sure enough I got one a day later. Today I got my bank statement. Would you believe they took out the initial payment from my account all $246.00 of it on 7/31 the day after their letter was dated. Even though they knew for over a month that I was cancelling.
