Shooting

I thought posting here would reach more of those actually interested rather than posting in the RV Actions forum. A lot of media focus has been on what Senator Feinstein will introduce in the Senate. If you are interested in the shooting sports, you may be interested in the 18 Bills introduced in the House since January 3. Type firearms into the search block to see the list and access the text of the bills. I could not get it to link directly to the search results.

Just got back from popping 150 rounds of 9mm with the Beratta 92FS and about 150 rounds with the Browning Buckmark .22. Now the joy of cleaning them.

Since we're spending the majority of the winter here in Silver Springs,Fl., I was looking for an indoor range and found one. It's called RD Tactical Solutions. It's down the road in Ocala but easy to get to. Web site is www.rdtacticalsolutions.com. There's an outdoor range also not too far away but some real yahoos shoot there. It's free but some of the shooters don't seem to realize what the word safety means.

We were staying in the LoW-Hi RV Park in Deming and a nice sweet gray hair lady nest door asked if we would like to go with her and the "girls" the next day to go to the "Shootin' Range to "Pop a few caps".

That was a first!

Derek, consider using an optical sight, no magnification, with your over/under. A fellow shooter got me to buy one, so I bought one several years ago for my old Remington .22 and really like using it, there is a downside though, I often forget to turn it off and go through button batteries quickly sometimes. BTW, I now buy CR2025 button batteries from Amazon for about $2 per card of 6, and they seem to last as long as WM batteries at 10X the cost .

Wow, Wow, Wow. Nice collection. Shooting is so much fun. My wife and three Married Daughters, Husbands and one Grand Son are all good shots and love the sport.

At my winter ranch I've got enough space for an outdoor range and get to practice frequently with my collection:

added one to my collection this summer in Colorado.

a Marlin lever action 1894. lots of fun shooting it

So far, I've added a scope and done a trigger upgrade to it.

took me 3 trips to the range to get that scope sighted, but now that its dialed in, I can put 3 inside a quarter at 150 yards

Our community has a range area set aside. Noting formal, just a section where dirt has been dug from the hillside for construction purposes back where it is away from public access. It isn't very fancy but it is free and makes for a lot of good practice and some fun & friendly competition among the neighbors here. Sure do wish that I had bought that new pistol when I was looking about two months ago! And ammunition is getting to be a problem around here too. ;)

I was at a store last evening that sells a variety of things including guns and ammunition. Just killing time while my wife was looking at other things, I went to the gun section. The clerk told me they normally have 600 boxes of 9mm in inventory. They currently have 6 and while I was talking to him that number went down to 4. It's amazing what public perception can do to an industry. The gun industry has to be loving it.

It is hard on your barrel. If you want to use it,it is great on rats and snakes but buy a cheap gun that you don't mind ruining the barrel.I speak from experience with it.

I hope this thread does not turn into another pro/con discussion of the shooting sport. My DW surprised me by asking to attend small arms training and purchasing a revolver. She has never fired a weapon in her life -- got her a Ruger LCR. 38 Special (+P). We are going to start going to local ranges during our travels. We see this as an opportunity to jointly participate in a sport and hone our weapons skills.

Since you asked... For any new gun owner I recommend formal training. NRA courses are available in most areas:

For everyone: "Refuse to Be A Victim" which is NOT a firearms course.

For pistol owners: "Basic Pistol" and "Personal Protection in the Home". If you've never touched a pistol in your life maybe start with the "First Steps Pistol" course.

For novices living in a home with firearms: "Home Firearm Safety".

Other classes are available for rifles, shotguns, personal protection.

If you want to get involved in shooting sports with handguns check out the USPSA and IDPA

We just arrived at the Clark County Shooting Park in Las Vegas,Nv. for our first work camping experiance. Pistol, rifle, shotgun and archery ranges at the present time. And one of the benefits is you shoot for free. You can find info at www.clarkcountynv.com

That is one great facility! We've used it for the last couple of years and spent several weeks in the RV park too. There are many clubs that use the facilities. Also several organizations that teach there.

I've used snakeshot, also called snakeloads, for years with no problems or ill effects. They're fairly worthless in anything less than .38 cal because of the amount of shot in them and the need for several shots in cals like .22 and 25, Advantage: works well against snakes and rodents at close range Disadvantage: very short range, < 15-20ft with any accuracy. They're really meant to be used up close. There's also a pistol that's chambered for .45 cal and .410 shotgun from Taurus giving you a better shotshell for varmint defense then a snakeload. Another thing, snakeloads don't work in automatics worth a damn even though you can get them in ACP and Parabellum.

The handgun Ranger and Jin mentioned is called the "Judge" by Taurus. Original versions chambered a standard 2 1/2" .410 shotshell and newer ones will accept a 3" magnum .410. You will possibly be surprised at how much recoil the "lowly" .410 has in a revolver. There are now several Personal Defense loads on the market in .410 designed for the "Judge". These are close range tools, not what I would consider medicine for coyotes in most situations as mentioned in post #85, Best wishes, Jay

Finding a place to shoot can be difficult on the road. In Tucson, there is a public range a mile or so from the Pima County Fairgrounds, which also has a campground. Does anybody know of a range around the Orlando/Clerment or Bushnell, Florida areas.

There is a beautiful well kept range in Yuma, AZ., just off hwy 95. Adaire shooting range with up to 1,000yd., distance. FREE.

I can not find the reference to it, but I remember some discussion (probably in one of the stricter states) about whether the Judge was a handgun or a short barrel shotgun. It was not too long after that Taurus came out with the longer barreled stocked version which I think Rossi now also has a similar version. Another twist potentially on the horizon is that the Proposed Assault Weapons Ban defines "Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder" as an assault weapon.

One of the newer .410 loads is the Dupo 7 expanding slug. It is even lead free to keep the environmentalists happy.

On edit: I looked at the Rossi website. They make a special point stressing that the Circuit Judge is a rifle and can not/should not be modified with a smoothbore barrel. This raises another interresting question in my mind. Is a shotgun with a rifled slug barrel a shotgun or a rifle by current or potential future legal definitions?

The one that dies with the most toys is still dead!

I thought the main difference between a shotgun and other firearms was the rifled barrel. I also thought that a long gun with a rifled bore that shoots shotgun slugs was defined as an express rifle.
