RV_ Posted June 26, 2017 Report Share Posted June 26, 2017 The traveling Vietnam memorial wall came here to Bossier City Louisiana a week ago last Wednesday and stayed for a week. I had been to "The Wall" in DC back in the 80s and it is a solemn and very moving visit. We weren't going to go but we did at the last minute and we are glad we did. The traveling wall is very well done and there were more than a few of us who found friends and had an emotional moment, as we relived our memories of them. The Traveling Wall is something to see, especially if you don't see yourself getting to DC. Ron & Donna Posted August 9, 2017 Report Share Posted August 9, 2017 For those of you traveling across northern Arizona this weekend "The Moving Wall" Vietnam Memorial will be at the Twin Arrows Navajo Resort Casino located at the Twin Arrows exit on I40. It's around exit 225 or 230. The opening ceremonies will be on Friday the 11th. The Memorial will be there from Aug. 11 thru the 15th. That would invoke the arrival of many former members of my unit, sometime as many as 40 from several states away because we new seeing the Wall for the first time, or actually anytime, is an emotional trip best done with friends. Even if you didn't know someone on the Wall, go for the impact. Then go over to the Korean Memorial and realize how many we lost in 30 months. Then on to the WW II Memorial. Kirk W Posted August 9, 2017 Report Share Posted August 9, 2017 While I agree that there is nothing quite like a visit to the DC wall, the traveling walls are worth a visit. I have seen two of the three versions of traveling walls. Of the traveling walls, I believe that The Wall That Heals is clearly the most impressive. It was created by and is displayed by the same commission authorized by Congress in 1980 to create the original wall in Washington DC. It is 1/2 scale of the original and looks very much like the bigger one. The Moving Wall was created in 1984 by some Vietnam veterans after attending the 1982 dedication of the first one in DC. This one is also 1/2 scale and operated by a not for profit foundation of veterans. The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall is also operated and maintained by a veterans group, this one out of Florida and the wall began in 1985. It is actually the largest of the 3 traveling walls at 3/5 scale. Good travelin !...............KirkFull-time 11+ years...... avvidclif Posted August 9, 2017 Report Share Posted August 9, 2017 Nothing can prepare you for the actual setup of the Wall in DC. All of the moving walls are panels sitting on the ground. DC is sunk into the ground and V shaped.The end of each leg of the V is level with the flat ground around the Wall. The wall from each side goes down into the ground to the center of the V which is (guessing) 7-8 feet below level ground. First name on left is first KIA and last is one the right. The last KIA is on the panel to the left of the "V". That completes the 'circle' of the war.
