Yellowstone late May?

May 22 would not be too early to visit.  In fact I would recommend even earlier if you can make it.

The links given by TrailerTraveler are excellent.

Do keep in mind there is a larger chance of snow in late May than in June.  So if you on some sort of schedule where you can't wait out bad weather for a day or three, it may not be the best time for you to visit.

You should have lighter crowds to deal with in May.  You even should be able to actually drive the speed limit on the roads in the park, at least in the morning hours  7am to 11am.

Some hiking trails will be closed so the bears coming out of hibernation are not disturbed by visitors.  (Also visitors are not likely to be put in risk by approaching a very hungry bear)

Very good chances of of freezing temps in early mornings.

If you will dry camp try to stay a Madison CG inside the park.  Saves a lot of travel time to see the sights in the park.
