We have not made any reservations as of now. We plan to to start in southern California and work our way north. I know it will be very hard to find sites in the National parks, but there should be sites available outside of the parks. My DW read a FB article from someone from California who said there are no sites available anywhere in the state. They are filled with people who have blue tarps on the rigs and the places are a mess. Now she is in a panic. I find this one post hard to believe. Please, what are your experiences. During the week, in most areas, it will be fairly easy to find a site. On the weekends, you may need to make reservations ahead of time (depending on the area). dirtyboots Posted May 10, 2017 Report Share Posted May 10, 2017 I just came up thru Nevada from AZ, then over to Northern California on Hwy. 395. Spent a lovely week in Standish, CA for a very reasonable rate at a very small, clean, RV park. Several rigs in and out for overnights, but never totally full. Then after going over Lassen (park still closed at that time because of snow) and spending 10 days at a friends ranch, went up I-5 to Weed, CA and again got a spot by calling a few miles before arriving. I know it's not summer - so maybe my experience isn't worth anything but I really don't think any of these parks are 'booked up' and I certainly didn't see an over abundance of permanents. One thing to keep in mind if traveling in August is the eclipse. All those folks coming to just see that event are not dropping out of the sky, then disappearing. They are going to be on the roads, in the motels, in the restaurants and in the RV parks. Yes, it's going to be busy in the path of totality but I think it will also be a mad house elsewhere before and after. Safe travels everyone. scouserl41 Posted May 10, 2017 Report Share Posted May 10, 2017 There are plenty of State and County Parks, commercial parks, boondocking opportunities in CA, but CA is a BIG state! If you want to camp on the beach it's going to be tough to just roll up and get a spot. If you use RVParky and RV Campground Reviews you should be able to track something down. We lived and camped in CA for several years and only had problems on holiday weekends. We dry camped at several casino's around San Diego with no problems. Several of the Elks Lodges also had camping and the one in Oceanside had a 40 space campground! If you let us know some of the places you'd like to stop at maybe we could come up with some recommendations?
