Many OTA stations will be going dark

Recommended Posts

The FCC has released the results of their recent channel auction, and a lot of stations have elected to take a multi-million dollar buyout to give up their licenses or move from UHF to a high or low VHF channel license. Many of those giving up their licenses completely will stay on the air with a channel sharing agreement with another licensee, moving them to one of the sub-prime "dot" channels, 2.2, 2.3, etc. That also means they will most likely drop from 1080i to 720p resolution. The complete list can be found here. Note that the dollar amounts are millions...

Very interesting. Re shuffle the deck. And soon more unlicensed transmitters. Technology sure has changed.

It used to be, we liked to suspend our short antenna between and now hate trees that block our Satellite signals

I wonder if some of those stations will drop the OTA broadcast but remain as cable or satellite only stations.

That's certainly a possibility, Dennis. I haven't seen any mention of any stations going that route, so we'll have to wait and see how it all plays out...

Those are the stations that will opt for a channel sharing agreement with another licensee over the bigger bucks for a complete shutdown.

I agree, it was likely the wrong word to use if you don't include the hundred+ stations that are giving up their licenses in favor of a channel sharing arrangement. From a purely channels going dark view though, there will be a lot of signals no longer out there.

No one is "taking" away anything. Those stations chose to release that license, for MONEY. The first one on the list is WCDC-TV 74419 Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY NEXSTAR BROADCASTING, INC.

Nexstar owns or controls over 100 stations. According to the list they just gave up 6 of them......for something in excess of 200 million dollars. I bet their stock holders are partying hard today.

LOL, I wish the FCC would give me a few hundred million. If they ever do, do I split it with Pat or Pete?

The FCC is not paying out those millions from our tax dollars. The money comes from the spectrum auction winning bidders.

LOL . We'd take it . :D

And , just who are the spectrum winning bidders ? They are paying that kind of money for a particular band of UHF ?

I guess I need an education on this stuff .

Maybe this CNBC article will make it all a bit clearer. Particularly note the mention of the $6 billion that's going towards the national debt...

Looks like T-mobile went home big from the sprectum auction.

Bellevue, Washington — April 13, 2017 — Buckle up, carriers. It’s about to get real. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) today just confirmed the Un-carrier’s jaw-dropping results from the recently concluded and successful 600 MHz FCC spectrum auction. The Un-carrier won 45% of all low-band spectrum sold, covering 100% of the US and Puerto Rico and enabling the Un-carrier to compete in every single corner of the country. T-Mobile walked away with a staggering 31 MHz nationwide on average, quadrupling the Un-carrier’s low-band holdings, for a total of $7.99 billion, the company’s largest investment ever. T-Mobile is also sharing plans to put that spectrum to use later this year in parts of the country, defying industry expectations.
