Memories in Montgomery

Recommended Posts

We had a memorable time in Montgomery, AL a few days ago when the radiator inlet neck decided it was time to let go of the hose. Of course, it choose to do this on I-85 at Friday rush hour! Really ended up working out quite well with a reasonably quick tow; 5th to a campground and the Volvo to Russell Truck Repair.  New radiator installed Saturday morning and we were on the way.  Very pleased with folks at Russell if you're ever in the need of work in Montgomery.

In the picture you can see where the neck separated at the hose retaining ridge. The material was greatly deteriorated and you could easily scrape with your fingernail.  Remember the days when you'd recore a radiator keeping the caps.  They'd last nearly forever.  I'd sure like to have a "discussion" with the materials engineer that is specing this crap!

When was your coolant last tested?

Previous owner had coolant flushed about 2 years/35,000 miles ago during replacement of the reservoir.

Well, one thing is certain...that should have never happened, especially with your truck being relatively young.

What brand and color of coolant are you now using?

We refilled with Mobil red which I believe is a nitrite free OAT.

Wasn't even less than 10 years ago that bolted together copper/brass is what trucks used to be.  That's still what Detroit Radiator is all about and will convert you back if you can handle the weight.

Thanks for the link Scrap, but how did you know just this week I was looking for a radiator and air charge cooler for the Red Baron?

Thanks Bill.  While it was an adventure you don't wish for repeats, it did add some excitement at what was otherwise a fairly boring day.

Glad it worked out OK Jim.

These radiators are a weak point for sure. Anyone with a truck that vintage should check them over carefully. The tend to crack or downright fail at the necks. And here is no fix other than replacement.  The nipples on the overflow reseviour return line also fail....again, no real fix.

What do you know that I don't about a 17-year-old radiator?  Except you have about double the miles I have...
