8k Onan Diesel genset fix

Recommended Posts

Started getting the dreaded error code 36 (generic error) on the Onan generator. It would run for a few minutes and then just shut off. Started right back up, but then would die a few minutes later. Did all the normal troubleshooting, all new fluids and filters, checked all the wiring, fuel flow, etc. So finally broke down and took it to an Onan service center.

While laying under the truck with the generator running with the tech watching the fuel flow through a clear filter housing, it started sucking air. you could clearly hear it sucking air. The sucking sound was coming from inside the generator housing. Turns out the fuel pump developed a crack. Not enough to leak, but enough to draw air. New fuel pump housing and good to go.

One other tip for older coaches, say 2004-2005 and before. Is to proactively change out any rubber diesel fuel hoses, like to the generator and or a Aqua/Hydro Hot if applicable.

The shift from Type II to ULSD fuels resulted in many rubber fuel lines developing      porosity leaks. The compound was broken down by the ULSD fuels. Resulted in fires along the way.

We changed ours out to Gates Barricade Fuel Line, but I believe any fuel lines you buy today have had compound updates to handle ULSD.

Glad you found your problem and thanks for sharing what it was:)!

Best to you and all,

Smitty
