New Unlimited Data on Verizon

chirakawa

Recommended Posts

I currently have 4 lines (hotspot, 2 phones and a tablet) and a 30 gig plan that costs $294 per month. Some months I run real close on the data, restricting myself to make it under the 30 gigs. If I understand correctly, the new plan would cost me $217 per month ($22 of which is insurance on phones), a $77 savings. Plus I would have 40 gigs of 4g available if I use my phones and tablet as hotspots when needed. The only thing stopping me at this time is I am waiting to hear from someone who is on the new plan and has had actual success using their phone as a hotspot.

We just signed up tonight with the new Verizon unlimited plan and I just tried turning on the hot spot on my Moto G4 with no issue. It turned on and created a hot spot I could connect to and ran some speed tests. I'm avg between 10-15mb connection here at my house. I'm not sure why another poster had issues since this is explicitly mentioned in the new Verizon plan as supported.

We were on an older unlimited Sprint plan, but I knew this wasn't going to be a good option once we get on the road. I wasn't really in a hurry to leave them as they worked well around here, but once Verizon had this unlimited plan, I knew it was time to jump. It was myself, my wife, and my Mom on our plan. I can't get my dad to join our plan as he seems to like his AT&T, but maybe that will be good if they came out with something on their own and I can get a line on his plan. Once we hit the road, I probably add another line that I can use in an extra phone or mifi on Verizon if nothing else comes up before then. I always figured I would do an AOL on a grandfathered line once we were on the road, but this might work for now. I also picked up one of the Tmobile 6gb simple choice plans before they disappeared mostly for the point that we could stream movies off that.

If I can believe what I learned today, that's not correct. You do NOT get 22 gb of data on the mifi (jetpack), only the 10 gb of 4g and then 3g speed data.

You're correct. I misspoke. So, with two iPhones and a mifi, you'd get 54 gb of 4g data. 30 gb of that would be 4g hotspot.

Gleaned this from the Verizon Community forum (continuing the 3-line example) . . .

With 3 lines you get a 22 GB cap with each line, so that's a 66 GB cap (3 lines x 22).

While 66 GB sounds good, here's how it would play out in my case (your mileage may vary) -- 2 iPhones & 1 USB modem.

According to the Verizon forum, this would get me 42 GB of streaming potential:

- 22 GB on the USB modem (Line 1)

- 10 GB hotspot tethering on iPhone #1 (Line 2)

- 10 GB hotspot tethering on iPhone #2 (Line 3)

On the face of it, not bad . . . until I think about the logistics of keeping track of each line's streaming total and constantly switching streaming hotspots. "Unlimited" still is not for me.

My brother change from an Unlimited AT&T plan to the new Verizon plan yesterday. He tried the hotspot tonight and it works fine.

Smitty. I am also interested in Doc's answer. I am in contract and did I did not get a notice. Recommendation by technomadia et al is to get in contract as soon as you can.

Do you have a plan of how to get on contract if you decide you need to?

Doc/Joel - Was the phone On or Off Contract that they sent you the email on about the GF UDP?

Wondering if me scrambling to get 'On Contract' - would make a difference... (I may have snoozed too long on this one:)!)

I guess we weren't technically under contract but the phone is being paid for under a payment plan. I don't know what would have happened if I said I didn't want it?

Thanks Joel...

Always fun when I try to dive back into phones... We a few weeks ago upgraded my wife's ATT phone to the iPhone 7, and along the way we dropped her GF UDP as it would really do us no good because of no tethering or hotspot capability. That was three days of different answers from different reps along the way.

As I've mentioned earlier, we've been Off Contract with my Verizon Smartphone for years now. As they would not let me update the plan, or use the upgrade phone option, without dropping the GF UDP I had on that phone. Was, with I believe prompting from you to say go look, able to add (And pay:)!) for a Hotspot feature on my phone. This has been great, and is our primary data line while traveling.

I did post on rvmobileinternet/Technomadia a question about how to go about getting back On Contract. I've read their section on this, about how to extend a contract, and then also read many wiki's and other sources on how to sort trick the Verizon online process with the end result all seeming to be to 'extend' vs 'get back on contract'. And yes online chat with at least three different Verizon Customer Support has resulted in conflicting answers (Most assuming I was after the new UDP plan, and eager to help:)!).

I did pickup something on one of the sites about if you're a member of a corporate group discount, I am, that this group has not seemed to be impacted with the zest to cancel older Off Contract GF UDP accounts. (I read it on the internet, so it must be true.)

I also mentioned that I've got a Upgrade my phone offer from I think it's either 2011 or 2013. I'm not opposed to upgrading now (Would have preferred to see what the new Samsung S8 brings to the table, as my current S6 is a good phone and has a mini jack that I need to plug into my non Bluetooth car audio system for Pandora/Spotify streaming. The S7 does not have that jack, but it and the S7 Edge are great phones, and did add back the micro SD card, which is a plus. Also as mentioned earlier, I've always been a Motorola Droid user until this current S6, liked many of the features of the Moto Force Z - but hesitant to the slow upgrade paths of unique to Verizon (Only Verizon has the Force.) phones... Many, many months behind, including on important security related items too.)

Yeah, I'm rambling - this stuff does that to my brain - but if in addition to being a member of a Corporate Discount group I were to buy a phone and pay it off over the two year period I would gain additional protection from being axed from the GF UDP. Well, I'd do that too... Just so strange I can't pick up the phone and ask Verizon these to me straight forward questions. I'd gladly go back On Contract, just don't want to drop the GF UDP in the process:)!

One other tip I picked up, was to work with specialists on UDP that know their way around systems.

Oh well, I'll probably simmer and study this a few more days, then probably get the S7 Edge, or maybe the Moto Z (Non Force)... and see what that does...

Best to you, and all,

Smitty

Howdy!

I was just about to pull the trigger and move one of my phones to Verizon when I found this last night on FaceBook.

https://www.rvmobileinternet.com/atts-wireless-home-phone-internet-rural-plan-250gb-for-60month/

I called AT&T (888-333-6651) this morning about it. I asked if this plan was offered to me and advised them I was a fulltime RVer (had to explain that to them) gave them my Escapees address in Livingston, tx. They looked it up and advised the plan was offered to me. I signed up for the 250gb plan and was advised I could switch to the 500 at anytime if I wanted to. We are AT&T customers so already. I added the 250gb plan the our account with a two years contract no charge for the device or activation and with my wife is a AT&T retiree And receives a 50% discount, it only cost us $30.00 a month for 250gbs. So if your using Escapees mail address this should work for you short of the employee discount. As I read it this is a true hotspot. Unlike Verizon's hotspot where after you will be throttled to 10gbs after use. It states you subject to network management when on congested towers.

I learned another "issue" today with Verizon's new plan, the autopay discount only applies for debit or checking account not credit card. This actually is an issue for me, since I have traditionally used a credit card for all payments I can and currently use a credit card for my Verizon and AT&T autopays. I also used it for T-Mobile when I had it and got their "use autopay" discount. As USA Today says in their coverage of the new plan, "You can't ever read the fine print too carefully".

I learned about this AT&T plan this morning and now have an order in process. Availability is entirely by your billing zip code. Our SD address was within the service area. It sounds like a great deal, but I'll feel more comfortable when I get the device and try it out.

Yep, waiting on my AT&T order to ship too. Our upstate NY billing address qualified, and there was no problem shipping to our current Florida address. I took the 250GB $60 plan, but I understand we can upgrade to the 500GB $100 plan at anytime if needed.

Is there a link to this ATT deal? I tried the one above but it did not work. Dave

What I was told by an AT&T CSR was that it's so new that there is no online access. Even the person I was doing an online chat with told me I had to call in to arrange for it.

If you Google "AT&T rural internet" you'll find that AT&T is involved with a number of initiatives in this area. This is probably part of that overall effort.

I didn't have the guts to ask to have the device mailed to us; the CSR was asking questions about "do you really live there?" so I decided it was safer to have my mail service forward it to me.

I just called AT&T about this Rural Data plan. The CSR I spoke with was able to find it quickly, but unfortunately my address in CA did not qualify. I live in a very rural county in a rural area in Northern CA, but no luck. The CSR indicated this plan was rolling out and may eventually make it to my area. I'm not holding my breath, but I will try back again later.

I currently have AT&T home and internet service and AT&T wireless. I was hoping I could get this AT&T rural plan for my home and switch my cell service to the Verizon unlimited plan and get the best of both worlds while we travel.

Apparently its not in the cards for now.

I placed my order by phone with "Krystal", an AT&T rep in Grand Prairie, TX. She was terrific to work with, and had lots of questions about RV life. She had no problem having my order shipped to our Florida address. She just put in the notes that it was a temporary address while traveling so hopefully the fraud folks wouldn't question the order. I will feel more confident though, when I see a tracking number... ;)

I would think they do this as there avoid the fee they pay the CC company. I have everything hit bill my CC also. But it is smart business for them, as. They can offer the lowest price to every customer. Look at some gas stations now having a cash and credit price.

Nice find. I think I am going to watch how the war plays out over the next couple of months. This way I could see how Verizon "manages there towers" when over 22 gigs.

So, it is not clear to me....do I have to have an ATT cell phone as well? Or can I do this with ONLY the Home Base on my account? I currently have NO ATT devices.

Jack, you don't need an ATT cell phone.

I just signed up this morning for the Home Base Account only. I had no ATT account prior to this.
