Could some Alberta members describe the procedure to register a used truck in Alberta as a RV puller?

Thanks

Registration in Alberta is open to either private truck, or motorhome, We're registered private. There is no weight ratings on the plates in Alberta, so pricing is the same for a Honda as a F-350, as a KW. Motorhome plates run the same. The MoHo registration has the advantage of offering an "Get out of Jail card" during a roadside check, but we haven't run afoul of any LEO yet, so haven't pursued it. Mike and Chris (BarnCats) brought their KW from out of province with a MoHo plate, and kept it when registering in Alberta.

I have been wrong before, I'll probably be wrong again.

My 730 came from the US so it had to be stock when coming into Canada, no changes other than the 5th wheel plate removed. Any other alterations will cause the truck to not be allowed in Canada. Pay GST at the Border. Then it has to be inspected for the Registrar of Imported Vehicles, after that a Provincial inspection.

Take docs down to a Registry. I used the one next to Palmer Salmon on Center st. There is a lady there, glasses short dark hair, late 30's maybe. Find her, she will make life easier. It will be registered as a "Truck" period, not a motorhome or anything else, just a "Truck". It was not difficult.

Then you need to get insurance. Forget Allstate anything bigger than an 350 was commercial when I dealt with them. Same with AMA. There is a firm I used, RV Direct on Bonaventure in the South. They specialize in RV's and "get it".

When I got mine, all you needed was a class 5 and an air endorsement. A 2 day course.

In BC, we need a CDL.

Need anything else contact me.

I registered my Volvo 730 as a "Motorhome" in Alberta. We just have our personal names on the registration and as mentioned above does not include any weight ratings as a motorhome. Just seemed easier to register as a motorhome.....less explanation required. :)

I'm no longer in AB, left 2 yrs ago. I'll send an e-mail off to RV Direct and ask them what I paid. I see 2 others did register their rigs as Motorhomes. The 730 was registered as a "Truck" but insured as a "Motorhome"

On edit, sent an e-mail of to RV Direct. As soo as I get a reply, I'll post it.

The biggest thing to deal with is the Towing Services....to get it into their heads you are a Semi Tractor not a pickup.

I am registered as a truck and insured as a motorhome. Rv direct insures both the Volvo and the toy hauler.

I bought it in the states already singled and I no problem with anything during the process of registering as just a truck. No one ever asked about modifications.

You may be fortunate. One individual had modifications done or mods were done by a previous owner and they were turned back or had to return the truck to the US. That was on this forum a couple of years back.

The exceptions may be a regular truck mod firm like Stalick or the outfit that converted my 4700. There are some conversion outfits for HDT's, which may be OK but it is best to check first.

Once registered in Canada and have passed the RIVA and Provincial inspections I was told you can do whatever you want to the truck.

I did worry a little at the time about modifications but all went well. Out of province inspection and a trip to registries for a plate after the RIVA sticker arrived.

I could not get an answer as to what constituted a modification and I didn't want to open a can of worms if I didn't need to.

This is what they came back with, you will have to call.

Hello,

The rates are based on value of the unit, how it will be used, if any prior claims, RV club member etc..

You can advise your friend to give our new business girl Sarah a call she can work out some rates.

Thank you

X2 what Roger said..

I almost bought a rig out of Ontario..however, I found it odd that he still had Texas plates on it since he had owned it over a year,,,.

The numbers were right but I told him it had to be registered in Ontario before I sent funds.. that was the end of that,

This is the place to go when thinking about importing

The truck I finally purchased was registered commercial (Canada) but I had it changed to camper and I insure it through my home insurance.
