BC BS UCA Plans are all HMO for Texas

Recommended Posts

Not necessarily recommending this, as it is a very personal, individual decision. I've had a TX HMO for 2016 because there were no other options on the ACA exchange. First thing I did was wander over to Livingston and I got set up with a doctor who did my annual blood work for the single prescription I require. I figure that way I also have a doctor who has a file on me so that if, heaven forbid, there is some kind of emergency situation when I am out of range (which is a huge chunk of time) hopefully things will be covered at least as far as the emergency goes. I cross my fingers/pray that I won't have to test that. Meanwhile, I figure I'll just pop over to the HMO physician once a year for the blood work and any other annual things I need done. Good luck to you in your own decision.

I went with United Health Care PPO last year instead of HMO but UHC dropped out and only HMO this year. Problem we have is we are already in Arizona for the winter. I want to wait until next November to establish a doctor.

I absolutely could be wrong, but it is worth putting out there in case needed. Also, perhaps someone more knowledgeable can clarify. I believe you need to become established with an HMO doctor sooner rather than later so that you have a doctor on record that can be contacted in case something happens when you are out of state. If you do not have a doctor on record, I suspect an already complicated situation could become even more nightmarish with, for example, the insurer refusing even to reimburse for emergency care.

That is one thing, among many, that we are worried about. I think you have to select a doctor when you signup or one will be assigned to you. Don't know if that is enough?

I believe that just selecting a doctor or having one assigned to you is not enough. I made my "New Patient" visit within the first quarter of 2016. Now they have a file on me with all the basic medical and personal info they need. If you have not stepped into their office yet, physically, then they really have nothing to go on should there be some kind of need for them to respond as your primary physician in the case of an emergency.

Good luck with BCBSTX. They are one horrible company to deal with. JMHO.

So glad to not have to deal with them any longer.

We have had our Medicare supplement from BCBS-TX for the past two years and it has served us well.

My wife's Medicare Supplement is with BCBSTX, plus I had a BCBSTX PPO in 2015, and we were happy with both.

Still struggling with a spring or fall first visit to my new PCP, and also location. We will probably go with the hill country near Fredericksburg. Does anybody know a good primary care physician there?
